We have one of these farms up by the Turkey River here in Iowa. We took the Boy Scouts there when they did fly fishing merit badge. It is a pretty fascinating process to see.

Thank you for the lesson ! I have been to the Rainbow Trout Farm at Roaring River State Park in Cassville , Mo. ! I have seen everything there but the fish getting vaccinated . They blow a whistle of a morning to start fishing and again of an evening to stop fishing . They release fish ever evening after the whistle is blown into the river for the next day of fishing ! Roaring River is right at the start of a big spring fed river ! It got its name because the large rocks at the mouth of the spring made a roaring sound . Sadly the rocks have been removed over the years so it no longer roars ! I have been as child when it still roared and that is where my wife and I went for our honeymoon back in 1995 ! We both had been there as children ! Now before anyone makes a comment about our honeymoon here is the story ! I told her that I would pay for the wedding and she gets to pick where we go and what we do on our honeymoon ! She wanted to go camping at Roaring River so we did ! It was just a few after they had a flood . The only camp site left was in campground 3 with a small tree on it . We went to see that tree every year until 2002 then we had some money troubles . Sadly she passed away 3 years ago this last January 22nd from brain cancer ! I would love to go see that tree but I don't have anyone to take care of my animals on the farm even for a weekend trip to go see it ! Oh that tree was only about 4 inches around back in 1995 ! Thank you for another great video !
Well done Ben! Quite a process going on there. More to it than what one would imagine. You're pretty good with that Vaccination gun. Imagine when detecting if we had to dig holes that fast? An average adventure would last about three minutes and we would be worn out lol.

Are the mature fish shipped to fish markets or are they used to stock lakes etc for recreational fishing?
John Divita Yes. There is a small needle attached to the end of the vaccine gun. About 1/8 inch long. These fish mostly go to be processed and then sent to various markets, but a certain percentage are used for private stocking ventures as well. The state hatchery raises their own fish for public waterways.
My man, Dude, You are just showing off that beautiful, clean, cold, fresh creek that runs straight through your property, the question is can you help me with my dirty, polluted, smelly, disgusting creek, I thought you can't! LOL!, Man you are so lucky, BTW my creek is just fine, but the flow rate is a bit low, so we buy fresh water in and recirculate, filter and run it trough UV light. I am so jealous.

The fish are vaccinated against enteric red mouth disease. The waste is used on the farm fields from time to time but not sold publicly. It works great though!
They aren’t native anywhere. They are true rainbow trout that have been selectively bred to maximize that yellow color. I think someone told me that the original brood trout came from Kentucky...but not positive on that.

Awesome video. I been on the research to understand more about aquaculture and trout farming in general. 1) How do you handle cold-snaps and winter weather? 2) Does the water temperature ever fluctuate? (summer/winter)
Fish tend to handle the cold pretty well. We hovered close to 0 Fahrenheit for a few days this year which is unusually cold for this area. The fish did just fine. It’s usually the warm summer water temperature that does the most damage. We mitigate as much as this by choosing good water sources for our farms. The water comes directly from mountain streams which tumbling and are very shaded…..keeping the water cooler and more oxygenated. We also supplement O2 into the water during the warmest months of the year.
Very cool and interesting. NC does a good job.i have lived in a couple of southern mountain states and NC does a far better job with wildlife and forest management. Thanks for the hard work.
I gotta be honest and say that I have never heard of lightning trout. But after looking them up they seem very similar. The lightning trout seems to have more of a vibrant pink strip down the side.
This is cool, I have a 3 metre long by 2 metre deep pond in my garden, could I like buy 100 baby trout, just release them, feed them up and eat them as and when ready? Or do they need flowing water?
Is there any chance you might be willing to share some professional advice and info? Where do you get your fish feed from? Is it contracted for a specific portion of time? How much is the fish feed? How hard is it to start a small fishery and expand(everything I’ve read says it is easy, but it doesn’t seem as easy as they say when I sit down and think about it)? Thanks for your time!
I’m sorry Dennis but I’m just the guy that vaccinates the trout. I really don’t have answers for you other than to say….it’s NOT easy. Your water has to be really good. You’ve got to manage the naturally occurring diseases or they will kill your fish. You’ve got to have ways of getting oxygen in your water or the heat will kill them. Every single day is a challenge and small mistakes lead to big losses.
octavio ace we don’t. Water temps are whatever nature dictates. Feeding is adjusted to accommodate temp changes though. Feeding occurs in the warmest part of the day during winter, and during the coolest part of the day in the summers.
Underdigger Oakley The fish waste is held in settling ponds where it neutralizes....but the fish are taken to a processing plant to be filleted. The parts that are left over are used to create a high quality fertilizer.

Not sure what you’re referring to there Karen. If you are talking about trout farming in general I’d say that it is relatively new. Probably mid 1900’s or possibly even later than that. If you’re talking about the diseases I vaccinate for....they are as old as time. It’s just the nature of trout farming that causes this diseases to kill larger numbers of left untreated. In the wild the fish population is much less dense than on a farm...so a sickness is spread as far or as quickly. Think of the vaccination as a flu shot.

Haha...it really just fell in my lap. As far as I know, I’m one of very few people worldwide to hand vaccinate. There are some machines that do it too...but not as good as me. :). At least that’s what I tell my boss.
Those aren’t the real “golden trout” that can be found above 10,000 feet in California. I think the word for the version you show is called “lightning trout.”

12 MidThunder Nope. Palomino trout are a cross between a Golden Rainbow Trout and a Rainbow Trout. These fish are Golden Rainbow Trout. But you are right... it’s not the same as a western Golden trout.

I have to say this is one great insight into trout farming and wish all trout farmers were as ethical usually there over stocked and thrown about.

They need flowing water with good oxygen content and cold temps
I have been to the fish farm near bevard nc back in the 1970s. they had some of the biggest trout there.
I think I remember going there once as a kid too. They had some monsters!
