The thing about the Hofner 172/3 /5/6 is that the playing area is free from the controls and therefore a much easier guitar to play than the common Strat . Hofner is a very much underated guitar that can do everything a Strat can do and much more . Good ones from the early 60's sell for less than £1000 and the top of the range Gagliano and vinyl Galaxies can do £1500 .

Are these humbuckers or single coils?

Two singles and one humbucker. Know that since I repaired a handfull of those pickups. Logo ones are singles, screws and slugs ones are humbucker. My ‘66 173 is HSH setup, my ‘64 176 is HHH setup, since it was higher end model.

@@_-_Michael_-_ do you know if the Hofner Verithin pickups are the same as the solidbody Hofner pickups? are they interchangeable? or are they wound differently for different purpose?

From what I saw there are only two versions, single coil with logo and Humbucker with screws and staples. They were made with same coil, around 3,7k so HB is around 7,4k. They weren’t specific to any model, same as all brands then, Gretsch, Gibson...

@@olivier3847 Nope, they were all done the same way and just of the shelve taken and mounted into any guitar was in production that day. Similar as gibson P90s or PAFs same went into Les Paul as into ES335 ES125 and so on...

Very astute comment. Probably not a beginner guitar but if you know what you're doing - as in most things - it would be a cool alternative to the usual suspects.
