My solo day hike to Picacho Peak and its terrifying cable scrambles located in Picacho Peak State Park and near Tucson, Arizona. Which, some consider to be the most terrifying day hike around Tucson. This video is part of my series where I attempt to find the best day hikes in Arizona. Did I find the best day hike in Arizona? One of the top day hikes in Arizona at least! Specifically, Picacho Peak is located near Picacho, AZ in Picacho Peak State Park.

You basically climbed it twice getting those coming and going shots. Good job.
OMG terrifying with a big guard rail & going one handed lugging the tripod, balls of steel, lol. Looks like it would make an epic scramble minus all the cables. Cliff swallows are awesome. Great rookie adventure I will say.
😮
Breathtaking upload bud, these shots are framed so beautifully! Bravo 👏
Thank you! Cheers!
Pretty Rad. Heck of a lot of filming you did! Nice work.
Thanks for sharing.
Glad you thought it was all worth it! Haha
Adam! Wow, what a hike. You make some of the absolute best day hike videos! Thanks!
Thanks! Glad you appreciate it because it's a ton of work lol. Many more to come!
I did this at night during a full moon back in the 70s. I was a UofA student back then and went with a group. I remember helping a girl right above me with her footing during that vertical cable climb. The full moon view was great.
I cannot fathom doing this in the middle of the night. Hats off too ya!
Those summit views were amazing! I was happy to view this hike on your channel because it looks a bit too challenging for my hiking abilities. Those birds those 😮
Glad you enjoyed it! One of My Favorites!
March 29, 2024 Braelynn (16), McCalla (13) and Kellen (11) Barrett climed to the Summit as a family "rite of passage"with their dad Brian (49) and their grandparents Dennis (85) and Pam (73). This was kids and dad's first time, 6th time for the older folks.
Congrats!! Hope it was a fun time!
Thank you, we drove by this yesterday. I'm planning to do it next weekend! Wish me luck!
That's how it got on my radar too! Such an imposing sight when you drive by. But super fun to hike! have a blast!
I remember we had engineers from Raytheon that just moved here try and hike this during the summer, they both died
Nicley done Adam!
It remindes me of a similar trail up Grandfather Mountain near Boone, NC.
As info, we visited the area south of Tuscon (Sierra Vista) when my oldest son and his family were stationed there in the Army.
The Huachuca mountains are really nice, getting up to over 9,000 ft. The Arizona Trails starts there at the Mexican border and heads through those mountains to Utah.
Look forward to more of your fun and interesting videos.
OO I'll have to write this mountain down and check it out someday. Yes I have found memories of checking out sierra vista when I used to live in Tucson. Glad you enjoyed the videos and hopefully I can add some more fun Arizona videos as I go forward.
Wow, you got rewarded with amazing views. Arizona has everything, desert, mountains and amazing views. It looks pretty terrifying to hike there but I think later watching it is worse than actually hiking. I experienced that when I hiked the Bright Angels Trail in the Grand Canyon. Did you hike back in the darkness?
Yes luckily those views are present the whole way up encouraging you as you go! So the trick was I actually hiked and filmed this over the course of 3 separate days so that I was able to hike back before darkness each time. Just hoofed it back to the spot I left off giving the impression of hiking the whole thing at the same time of day.
Just watching this again, it popped up great views if you look across the highway at those black pile of rocks, we snuck over the highway and threw a fence and walked over there and climbed up those mountains or actually just a big pile of rocks, but there’s a little area up therethat you can actually put up a tent and hang out overnight when we went through. There was a bunch of cows roaming around luckily nobody was driving through there to check on them. Not sure if it’s private property or not.
Great Thumbnail! 🤣😂
Thanks 🤣
I normally go for those New England videos you shoot. But I gotta say That place was truly beautiful I really enjoyed seeing The cactus . It is strange to me to see how flat the land is with mountains out of the plain.
Yes a totally different landscape that has it's own kind of special beauty. Luckily you'll get a New England hike tomorrow!
I gave up at 7:49 There were SO many people, some even running. I got nervous about being bumped off the mountain right there and quit. Great video btw! The birds maybe protecting their nests. They were somewhat common where I lived as a kid.
You'll have to go back and try again on a less popular day and see how it goes!
@@AdamHoyt for sure!
Beautiful views! I have visited Tucson about 30 times, only because I have relatives there and south of the border. May I ask, what month and at what time did you start your hike?
So on each of my vides the date hiked is always listed in the description. This was filmed over three days around April 30th which honestly was on the tail end of when it's okay to try and hike this with how hot it was getting. Still always a good idea to go in the morning or later in the afternoon.
I was just there last week as well, but I was only doing the small mountains in the front area and across the highway but I did make it to that bench and that was about it never went to the top
Looks like you'll have to finally get to the top some day
@@AdamHoyt I actually did go to the top and sat up there on the bench, but I was like 20 years ago when I was in shape will probably have to do it again soon just for the heck of it
I've flown my paramotor over picacho several times, always wanted to hike it, think I'm going to do it.
You really should!
Great video with amazing shots. Ignore the haters!
I always do!
Do they have a Terrifying 25 list in Arizona? Is so, seems like this should be on it. (especially with one hand like you do it, and multiple times for camera shots). Thanks for sharing and braving this trail for us all! Guess there are birds more bothersome than Gray Jays.
this is an easy hike, there is nothing "terrfying" about it
I don't think any other state besides Maine does. Tough I will admit I have not checked since I do not live in or near them haha. But I agree this trail would certainly fit the bill and any other trail needing chains or cables for sure! The gray jays are not even a bother!
You can add Humphrey's peak for a scary climb. Under optimal circumstances, it's exposed and technical, but OK. I've done it when there was a strong cross slope wind and that made it supremely scary.
I lived in Tucson most of my life and I never once hiked Picacho!
Sounds like it’s time!
900' straight up (and down and up) it looks short on the map but it will kick your ass.
tho I admit some hotshot ran past me wearing birkenstocks...
Truth!
Arizona (Phoenix) resident and I've done this trail 3 times. I'm 61yo now, dealing with a few health issues and may not get up there again.
At the start of the video you may think the commentary is overly melodramatic - it's really not. The hike is about 1mph concentrating the whole time, where you put your feet, with rock wall on one side and open expanse on the other. It slowly shreds the nerves. BUT, on top is exposed and is as close to flying again as I can get, having retired from paragliding (there is/was a PG video for Picacho Peak on RUclips somewhere).
It is as tough going down as going up - obviously very rough, desert heat in Summer, but low altitude compared to 4 Peaks hikes. But get fit, wear more than just sneakers - trail shoes are good, gloves and get an early start and go for it. Be ready to turn around early though, if it is too much; you don't want airlifting off the peak.
Love this trail. And love the desert surrounding the peak.
this dude had to walk twice to set up and take down the camaras!
I flew my drone to the top...does that count? Also, those birds are not to happy about drones...they will attack lol, I found out the hard way.
O wow I can bet they were not happy one bit!
My friend told me this shit was easy and it was my first hike ever. He didnt mean too and he apologized after lol. I did the whole thing because im no quitter
dang your friend is quite the jokester. Great for pushing through!
I heard a man lost his life here just as of recent. I stopped by just the other day. Going back tomorrow morning.
Yikes. I had not heard that. Have a safe hike yourself!
Picacho peak is not in Tucson
Well it certainly ain’t in Phoenix! 😳
@@AdamHoyt It's close to halfway. I'm house hunting in Casa Grande nearer Phoenix, Marana nearer to Tucson and Picacho Peak in the middle.
Oh, come on. My grandmother could do this hike. Such shameless over-hyping.
Dude, I’m 60. Overweight and have a pacemaker. We recently did this with no problems. You want a tough hike try Flatiron or Ridgeline in the Superstitions. Even Battleship is tougher. No offense Nancy, but I’ve been hiking that since I was 12. Maybe a buttercup like you should stick with the terrifying excursion up Hole in the Rock, or a brutal walk around Papago Park.
shrug
Lol so dramatic. This hike is tough but I would never consider any part of it “terrifying” and I’m afraid of heights.
Jeez and I didn’t think I’d was terrifying enough to black out memories. Jeez! You don’t even know how scared you were anymore! 😳
@@AdamHoyt lol good response
@@letsgobaby8501 it’s my job!
yeah agreed lol, it's an easy short hike
@@HikingEngineer nothing at a state park will every be considered “terrifying” haha
terrifying? I realize you're trying to get views and catch people's attention, but c'mon man. it's an easy hike
Last I checked fear had nothing to do with hardness? 🤔
It requires moderate/hard effort (depending on time of year). It also requires a high level of concentration for 4-5 hours. And it requires a degree of respect for ones own mortality.
For the hard core climbers, move on please. For the rest of us, enjoy. I know exactly what peak this is. For some, it may be a little scary. Why criticize this little journey? Great job on the video.
Okay visual, “freak’n” horrible audio. Dude, really, worst voice over ever.
Thanks for watching and enjoying the video! :)
Seriously. Can u say precarious one more time??? If u would have kept ur mouth shut it would have been a cool video.
You’re on precarious footing with this precarious comment mtbtravelers9922!!! You better watch yourself! 😮
That mountain is not terrifying 🤣
