He's still playing now and played In a winning Grand Final (which Is like your Superbowl) last year that Collingwood won In 2023. He's the first American to do so.
He's not an Imported player his family moved here when he was a kid in the 70s. I'm sure he calls himself and Aussie. Ask John Farnham If he's a pom and Jimmy Barnes If he's Scottish and not Aussies.@@AussieTVMusic
@@puddsy17He's talking about Don Pyke, the former West Coast player and Adelaide Crows coach who is now football boss at West Coast. He was born in Bloomington, Illinois Though he is still Australian, because his parents are Australian and he never held a US citizenship.
We also have Rememberance Day on the 11/11. ANZAC Day is on another level to Remembrance Day here and in New Zealand. It’s a public holiday and Aussies and Kiwis get up before dawn for the Dawn services. During Covid when were unable to have crowds we had driveway services at dawn. It’s a very special day here and in NZ when we honour our vets and NZ vets. ANZAC is an acronym for Australia and New Zealand Army Corps. The ANZAC Day footy match is huge too.
Susan here - thanks for the reaction Mike, I thought you'd enjoy it especially as he's a fellow Texan. Keep up the great work, we Aussies love what you're doing 😊
He's a great young man, and we are happy to adopt him as an Australian. As a Collingwood supporter I appreciate his valuable contribution to the club. It is terrific when his parents come down to watch him play, and the television cameras show their reactions when he does something special. The pride and joy is infectious, especially when the Collingwood supporters start chanting USA, USA, USA!
Great story, love hearing Mason's dual accent 👍. When you say, it's the subscribers that helped you get to where you are, that may be, however, the creator needs to be worthy before the subs come. You've been quality from day 1, and us Aussies and Kiwis like non pretentious down to earth people, and we will definitely keep "stopping by y'all👌👏👏
Mason has become a Australian citizen now and his parents Phil and Jeanette live near Dallas, Texas and have taken to footy and now know more than Mason about the game and will talk to anyone and everyone about it just lovely people. Masons brothers play Aussie rules in Texas. Watch "what is AFL" to find out a bit more about this very old game unique to Australia.
Mason is still in my team, the Collingwood Magpies or we just say the Pies. I have always called him our American Pie. He was terrible but I never expected him to be fabulous at a game he had never seen played and it is fast and hard. It is also the first coded football anywhere. Mason didn’t play for nearly 4 years in first division. Fans and the press were nasty, they wanted him gone but Mason never gave up, he never stopped learning and he has the best temperament of many players. He never lost me or many others and I was as proud of him as I was of any of my children. It was funny in that game that he finally got it together. You knew every time he had or was close to the ball because 95,000 people were chanting USA. Fans from both teams and he deserved it. What you didn’t see is Mason was attacked from behind by a player from another team who eye gouged Mason and then ran his thumb nails down his eyes. Mason’s retinas both detached and he was blind. It took 5 or 6 surgeries to get his sight back and he was so alone. My youngest daughter was going through the same thing at the same time so I know what he felt. Now he plays with prescription swimming goggles and no one is going to say anything to someone that tall about that. Mason knows that one wrong hit and his sight could be gone again but he chooses to keep playing. It has slowed down some of his playing but he is still good enough to play and do it well. There are still plenty of sour grapes that say he isn’t but they aren’t good enough to play. They are only bright enough to use their mouths to try and pull others down. Australia doesn’t like that and we call it tall poppy syndrome because they try to pull someone good down. Now he is a Citizen so he is my Australian Pie. Mason is a credit to his parents and a very nice part of our Country now. There is a video about what happened to him. If you haven’t already watched it there is also a video called, What Is AFL. Thank you.
I saw Mason interacting with a couple of kids while walking from Collingwood’s training centre to the MCG - he towered over them, but worked hard together down to their level, and gave them freely of his time.
We have a young Aussie - Tory Taylor, pretty much doing the reverse of Mason Cox this year as has just been drafted from Iowa by the Chicago Bears as a punter and was drafted in the 4th round which is rare for a punter. There have been Aussie punters in the NFL before, and still are, but this guy was a legend in his time in Iowa and he is going to be fun to watch this upcoming season.
Collingwood won the grand final last year with Mason Cox. You should have seen his parents watching the game. They were going crazy along with all the Magpie supporters. Loving your reactions. I think we're going to have to make you an honorable Aussie.😊
Mason is still playing and is now a premiership player for Collingwood. Collingwood and Mason won last year's Grand Final. He is now the only American to win a Premiership in the VFL/AFL.
The video needs a pt II. Cox still plays. His team is the reigning champs, but too many injuries this season, they won’t even make the finals (September).
Mason seems like a lovely man. He’s still here in Aus - but others will tell you more about him as shhhh, I’ve only ever been to one footy match in the 1970s and never watch it on TV lol . My father brother & sister went every single week in footy season. When I went, all I remember is reading the advert signs 😂
As a Richmond supporter I was devestated after Mason Cox pretty much set the tone for a Collingwood victory and pretty much stopped a streak of what would have been 4 premierships in a row in the 2018 Preliminary Final. Having said that Mason Cox seems like a good guy and the AFL would be mad not to use him post-career in a promotional role back to the USA to raise awareness of our great game.
Yeah I reckon we would have killed West Coast, it really hurts me too. But at that point, I felt a little spoilt, even though we waited 37 years for 2017. To make things easier, I tell myself that we may not have won the third without losing to Collingwood, because it changes history, the knock on effect.
My opinion is you have attracted subscribers because you are authentic. The over the top reactors drive me crazy. Coxy plays for the team I support. He is never the best on the ground and often struggles, and is sometimes frustrating, but I think the team is better with him in it. I am a Cox supporter. It's funny going to an Australian Rules football game in Australia and hear the crowd chant USA, USA and fly the US flag after he kicks a goal. 🤪
The ground that was featured in this story, the "MCG", is where the American 1st marine division was billeted after the Guadalcanal campaign, so it is not the first time that Americans have stepped on that famous turf.

I thin; Mason has a bit more of a mixed accent now. I guess he been living here about a decade now so not surprising. He still plays but he not always in the side. Really is a fringe player that could be in and out of side any week. But given his height, he there to help in the ruck position and key forward line. He done really well for someone that did not grow up with the sport.. There a lot more people from Ireland that do well at the sport. When I seen Mason play now he seems to wear some glasses over his eye as some protection. I think he had a detached retina or some injury so has been wearing what look like snow goggles on. His side will not make the finals this year but did well last year.
