Took delivery of a new CX-8 Sport petrol in October. Considered the CX-9 (too big) and the CX-5 (too compact) before making a decision. As the entry level model it ticks all the boxes and in my opinion it would be a waste of money to purchase a higher grade. I get great economy from the petrol engine but it can feel slightly underpowered at times. Apart from that its a fantastic SUV.
I just switched from a Kia Carnival diesel to the diesel CX8 touring to downsize and I was really impressed with the power and refinement of the CX8. The sales guy was right in that I would love it and didn’t bother test driving the petrol variant as I also liked the AWD feature. I no longer have issues parking compared to the Kia that could barely fit into the garage.
Another great review by Chasing Cars that contains, in my opinion, sufficient detail to make informed decisions. Lately I've been researching SUVs made by several car manufacturers. Detailed information on fuel economy, engine type (power/torque) and total cost of ownership that includes insurance and servicing costs, are of great value in car review videos. I would stay clear of the CX8 petrol engine if fuel consumption is 14 L / 100 Km (City)
DON'T buy the diesel. It is a 100000km grenade! Happily pay the extra for the higher fuel cost of petrol v's diesel. It will be cheaper (and less hassle) in the long run.
@@pioong7443 Do a little research and you will find the problem. The engine oil became diluted with diesel fuel due to the diesel particulate filter regeneration. The camshafts became scored due to a lack of lubrication from the diluted fuel and the engine grenades just north of 100000km. I have first hand experience. Inherently flawed!
Peugeot 504/505 estate did this practical 7 forward seat thing in the late ‘60s to ‘90s then we let the accountants loose alongside marketing graduates to run car companies as opposed to keen drivers and engineers - sad ☹️
We looked at one and decided that buying an Escape with a luggage trailer (3k) was going to be far more practical in terms of space on long trips with only two kids. While 700L is great, its not sufficient if you want to go camping with a pram and tents etc. The Escape is miles better to drive in town by a long way. The back end looks a bit weird from side on due to it practically being a stretched CX5, I really don't like it, front and back it looks nice. All the CX9 gets is a longer nose (which is no use to anyone) and its wider.
Great idea. Going with the trailer option, I would choose a CX-5 in a high spec which nets you the 2.5L turbo petrol engine. All the torque of the diesel, without the DPF problems and associated oil dilution leading to premature engine failure. When I bought a CX-5 in 2012, there was a 2.0L petrol or 2.2L turbo diesel (guess which one most people bought). The 2.5L naturally aspirated petrol motor is fine around town, but the turbo makes all the difference on the highway and towing.
Having test driven the car, for SE Asian market with bumpier roads and generally lower average speed, the softer character of the car makes the NVH pretty amazing CX5 could be too hard for bumpy roads and in slow speed
It's about $6000 cheaper at entry level and you can also get this in diesel if wanted. And not a ton of size given up. I love the CX9 but honestly this one is just too good a deal.
DO NOT BUY A MAZDA DIESEL. if you're looking at these used, then buy the petrol. The Mazda diesels grenade themselves at only moderate KMs and replacement motors are over $10k... We've got the petrol and it's fine around town and get under 9.5L/km easily.
I just picked one up today I paid 44k with front park sensors floor mats and rear boot matt. Sounds like you got a good deal. The issue at the moment is no stock so anything you can get and not wait for is a bonus
No, driveaway means just that - you drive away. Stamp duty, registration, CTP, dealer delivery, number plates ... all included in that figure. Any extra costs shouldn’t be allowed on top
I’m confused about the size of all these SUVs. Is this as large as a Santa Fe? The boot seems to be bigger with the 3rd row up. But I don’t think it’s as wide in the cabin. How much larger is a Kluger? This market has so much choice it’s confusing.
Basically as wide as cx5 but its slightly longer than mazda 6. Think of it as jacked up mazda 6 estate. For someone who's 170cm, even the 3rd row is decent. Cx8 used to be a JDM because CX9 is too large
You should heed the warning. Mazda diesels suffer from engine oil being diluted with diesel due to the many regenerations needed for the DPF. The diluted oil then doesn't provide protection and the engine will be cactus shortly after 100000km. (ask me how I know...) Mazda are well aware of this and should not be selling the diesel knowing it is not fit for purpose. They have damaged their reputation IMO.
@@ethanskipworth8714 Diesel. Not close to the mazda figures. On a perfect hwy run it will maybe get 5.9 but usually 6.1 Around town (suburbs, not traffic) is 7ish
Depends what kind of driver you are. Probably doesn't suit a heavy foot, but I'm sure this would work for me, I'm light on the pedals (currently drive a 17 y/o Estima)
He keeps comparing it to the CX-9 because it's the next logical step up in the Mazda range size wise, just like he compares it to the CX-5 (next size down) Easy to understand! Where is the bias?
Good to see the base models getting reviewed... Keep it up.

Son has just purchased the Touring SP CX8 with the black bits. (March 2021). Two kids under 2, and it’s a great rig.
I love how Mazda is creating new categories... I'm expecting a CX-50, CX-80, and a CX-90 with reviews here sooner than later :D

The Budget Direct quotes and servicing prices/info are a fantastic addition

Looking forward to the eventual CX-8 vs Tiguan Allspace vs Sorento/Sta Fe. The 5+2 SUV Segment is an interesting little niche.

Kids tend to be pretty messy. Understatement of the year Tom.
I wish the CX9 came in a Diesel variant
detailed and informative video- helped me to decide while looking to buy cars- thanks for great videos!
Which is better sir, cx5 top of the line or cx8 base variant? And why

Great review! Hope you guys can do a review on the Merc A180 at some point.
Mazda can easily put 2.5t in cx8 however that will affect cx9 sales
I just love it😍
It would be good if we could find a way to compare NVH amongs all brands/ models.
That would be great honestly!
Not available in NA Does it make sense to favor this over CX-9 ?

My man looks good in that t shirt.
I like your intro... 👌
The design of mazda in the beginning was very sensation but now the all look same especially between cx9.
What is the colour of this car?
damn my fam just got this exact same car few weeks ago what a timing
How has been your experience till now? Will be good to know...thanks
I'm about to! Any thoughts?
Really don’t like the chrome on top of the mazda logo. I wish they made this just like the cx5
I didn't think I would see cx 8
seems odd to have a map pocket when we use gps.
Too bad it’s not sold in North America. I really like the CX-9, but it’s a bit long.
It's it narrow for the japan home market?
what does "drive away" actually mean? Are there hidden charges, or any add-ons that I'd still have to pay before I can drive it out the dealer?
