  • I Travel To Eat! We love trying the local dishes in new countries! It's even more important to me now to steer towards a whole-food plant-based diet after being diagnosed with breast cancer, and having a single mastectomy in August 2023.
    That's why I was so happy to finally find a restaurant in Banaue that served vegetarian dishes!
    We also tried some Filipino favourites:
    Adobo
    Bicol Express
    Hoping
    Sinigang
    Krinkles
    and found the coolest local bakery.
    Come with us on our food tour of Banaue!

    That gabi dish is taro leaves cooked in coconut milk. Do not lay your utensils on top of those tables. That is just an eatery, not a regular restaurant. They have no table cloths and those tables are wiped off by dirty rags.

    Hello M&L,
    Looks like the Philippines is one of the cheapest country in Asia. I was gobsmacked when you mentioned the 2 pesos for them home made pasteries.
    Have you seen anything even cheaper than that? If so what would it be?
    That elderly shop owner could really speak english. Is that the case in other shops / restaurants / transports, etc ?
    Enjoy your weekend, mind yourselves 🙋🏻‍♂️

    • @FrugalTravellers
      @FrugalTravellers  3 месяца назад +1

      Hello SERGIO 👋
      It's so lovely to hear from you, and your comments are always so thoughtful and interesting 😊
      I'm trying to think of anywhere that's had less expensive pastries but nowhere comes to mind. That bakery was excellent value for money, and was definitely the least expensive we found during our month in the Philippines.
      The shop owner was so lovely. We had a really good chat with her about life in Banaue, and her 10 siblings! I think she learnt English at school, and it might still be taught in schools today, as so many people in the Philippines speak excellent English. There are also so many Filipino OFWs as well (Overseas Foreign Workers) and most families have 1 or more family members living and working overseas. Filipinos are just so lovely - we met so many happy & friendly people, and had some great conversations as well.
      Thank you again, SERGIO, and we hope you have a wonderful week 🙏🤗😍 ~ Mandy

    Random question but which countries have the worst pest issues at restraunts?

    • @FrugalTravellers
      @FrugalTravellers  3 месяца назад

      Hi Cory. That's a great random question! We're currently in India, and the flies are pretty annoying at times. Tropical countries tend to have more bugs, but I can't say I remember ever being super plagued by any... or maybe it's just something we've become accustomed to after 30+ years travelling 🤔 Any tropical country, really, but you really do get used to them faster than you'd think. ~ Mandy

      @@FrugalTravellersthe taro leaves in coconut milk is called laing. It should be spicy but majority of Filipinos do not like spicy food or we want the hot sauce on the side. Hopia that you ate is made with mung beans or mongo. Love your vlog seen it for the first time. I am retired already and has been travelling on the cheap like you do. Enjoy your trip. I will be watching more of your adventures.
