Why not just connect a really long ethernet cable to the plane.
Why not just troll asininity?
Stinky McGoober why cant you just git gud
Lmao imagine that. A 1000 mile long cable that drags across the countryside destroying homes
Image little Johnny playing a field some where, then BLAM! Decapitated. xD
Data gets f*cked after ~120m :(
I thought this video would be 5 seconds long. "How Does Airplane Wi-Fi Work?" Linus replies, "It doesn't" and walks off set.
That would be sooooo badass xD
Cody Everingham that would have made a sweet intro
Cheers for this, I've been looking for "cheap faraday cage" for a while now, and I think this has helped. Ever heard of - Tennorra EMP Esterification - (search on google ) ? Ive heard some amazing things about it and my colleague got excellent results with it.
Summary of the comments:
1: People that are saying 5mb amd 512kb is a lot
2: People saying 100 - 300 is normal
AEX10 3. people stating their Internet speed
depends on whether "bits" or "bytes"
300 kilo bytes per second
Dude I have 4-5Mbps
5 gigantibytes
20 mbps is slow?
I'm only living on 2!!
WITH MY FAMILY!!!!!!!!!
that you have 2 mbps DOES NOT MEAN IT'S NORMAL
Bro i got 300 mbps
Same
There's a difference between megabits and megabytes get some info on this you'll not be confused
Mine is 300 kbps
0:43 - Okay what with the sex toy racing now?!
its their other channel "channel super fun"
You said 50 Megabits per second (Mbps)and showed the acronym for MegaBytes per second (MBps)..I only point this out because everyone on the internet that call themselves techies seems to get this backwards and I know for a fact you know/understand the difference(8 bits in a byte)just thought you could make sure to have it rite next time... keep up the good work I love this channel!!
It showed "MBPS" (all caps), so it really doesn't matter... Believe me, Linus knows how to spell it.
He said "Megabits" and it showed MBPS, so there is nothing wrong there, you besserwisser
IWImovies megabits is Mb megabytes is MB
shut* but shit hurts also
yes it does, Fawks. Would you rather have a 10000 megabyte storage or a 10000 megabit storage.
How Does Airplane Wi-Fi Work?
Answer : It doesn't
Yes it does...
JK it works for me. (I go in emirates flights normally . They have good WiFi)
911gp
911gp lol
Haha
In Australia the maximum speed we can get is 100mbs if we pay about $130 a month, most people have 12-25

For anyone wondering, SMH means "smell my head".
Alex Danut or it could mean shake my head as in face palming and shaking my head in disappointment
The WiFi I used on Norwegian Air (which was free btw) was pretty good to be honest.
onee same over on Delta. Watched this buffer free
...it was free? how?
Akito Always
Same with Finnair
@@akito8061 nowadays it's not that free anymore. Now there's a free version that barely works for browsing, and it took me 30 seconds to open a simple website. Then there's the paid version that's probably 0.5 mbps. It was decent
I'm proud to say that i work in a tech company that is bringing this exact technology to planes. Expect better internet soon because we are pumping out these units weekly.
"ATG systems don't provide great speeds."
"Usually somewhere in the neighborhood of 5 Mbps."
tfw my home internet is 3 Mbps.

Right in the feels
Feels bad man
welp be glad u arent on a fking 100kb/s lel
i am on 2Mbps and i find myself lucky
I have 17Mb/s! Or 2.125MB/s.
Im here with 200kbps...
Last time I was this early apple made tech and not books.

What is wrong with books?
$300 USD for it.. thats whats wrong.
No no no. Apple is a dongle company.
Thread212 I have brought books for $2000, 300 bucks is cheap as chips
Lol I took jet blue to Disney world yesterday. I streamed back to the future with no lag, also the wifi is free.
RyanHu Are you sure that's not part of their NAS?
I despise flying, but I took JetBlue to Louisiana a few months ago and was shocked that the internet on the plane was not only free, but fast. I had no issues watching RUclips in HD, and rich web pages loaded reasonably fast. It actually weirded me out because I hadn't flown in such a long time and I figured plane wireless would be slow and we're lucky enough to be able to read an email on it... Guess that's sort of the case most of the time, didn't know JetBlue was a leader there.
until you go to their website and see how much your parents spent on that flight
RyanHu everything’s better when it comes to JetBlue 😂
Julian GameZ good thing my dad works for jetblue ;d
3:20 I love how the "fuel hose" is the preconditioned air hose
Ah yes, just like the people who say the bleed hose from an Airstart cart is fuel.
I only get 6 Mbps at my house :( It wasn't that bad until video games grew to over 50GB's.
bucky13 mine is 100-200 even at peak times
bucky13 lol I have 512kbps and still happy
Kb or KB? My quick maths says that 512Kb would be 64KB/s.
jakemichie97 KB my bad 😂😂😞
I feel so badly for people in the US and stuff, seems yall get slow as hell speeds
jetBlue are awesome, they have basic wifi for free on most of their flights! They're one of the best domestic airlines in the USA, along with Virgin America. Their free wifi is much more reliable than the paid Gogo inflight wifi that most other airlines use.
Daniel Lo Nigro Technically it isn't free because you pay for the flight and some of that money goes into the wifi
Maximilian Kim-Kostarev Sure, but other similarly-priced airlines require you to pay extra for wifi. I guess I should have said "wifi is included in the ticket price". In any case, it's better than other airlines.
Very true. Well, it was at the time you posted this comment. The two low cost airlines you mentioned were running loops around the full service airlines by almost any measure.
Streaming this on Delta Flight DL544 right now 😀
@Connie McMaster wtf
Connie McMaster u had a seizure?
Jerry the drug addict probably his cat
JET BLUE IS THE BEST! i've flied several times recently and their wifi is fast and free. Support the airlines that give us free wifi, unlike american airlines.....
It was pretty fast when I tried it, but too unstable for streaming or gaming.
probably not gaming but screaming was good for me
Christian brown
It was from New York to Orlando. The video kept buffering, even when I put it on 480p.
I flew the other way, Tampa to New York and it was good for streaming RUclips or Netflix.
Robbie Lee
So did I on my return trip home. Did the same thing. I guess there are some variables, such as how many people are actually using it.
126kB/s sharing with 5 ppl, in Australia... Normal life.
Liangshi Xu Give me the link of those people's death certificate.
You get used to it. been there too. 128KB/s for whole house of very alive younger people with at least one desktop per each (and some had additional laptop/wifi enabled pda/smartphone - this was before tablets became common).
Pyroslav x i am talking about right now. i have to use 4G on my iphone 7 that i cant plug earphone into !!!
Liangshi Xu lucky I'm in Melbourne and I get just over 10kb/s and when it rains I lose connection and if someone's on the phone I also lose connection
(No I don't have dial up I have adsl2+)
Brodie Garrett You couldn't even watch this video if you had 10kb/S stfu LMAO
1: JetBlue has intalled wifi capability on all of their airbus fleet and 72%(as of time of this comment) of their e190 fleet. 2: You neglected to mention that their wifi is free...
Edit: JetBlue has finished installing wifi receivers on their entire fleet.
He's talking about the KA band
JetBlue uses KA band wifi for all of it's wifi. On average, you can get 12+ mbps from the free and even more if you pay $9/hour...
Jesus, just download a movie or book to your phone.

hey Linus as someone that works in this specific field for a major Canadian airline I have to say you did a really good job on this video. keep up the good work.
There is no explanation needed, obviously the plane is hooked up with an ethernet cable to a router on the ground. Duhhh
"from new york to l.a. in 6 hours"
is america really that large?
Aaron to yes, from New York, NY to San Franciscon, CA, the flight was about 2,200 miles
yeah......did you think it was the size of Hawaii?

1:57 When your home internet is only 512Kbs... Thanks for reminding me how shitty my internet is LMG :(
Jake 350 kbs over here
Jake Wow...how do you live?????!??!?!?!?!!/&:$;!48,
Very slowly my friend, very slowly. Would like to note that i have to pay 130$ a month so my data isn't capped as well. otherwise i get a 300GB a month cap, which btw is impossible when you have like 4 people in your house on the internet.
Jeeeezus. The struggle is real isn't it? Where do you live to be limited to that speed?
Hamza Aman A small town in Kentucky which pretty much explains it, a town that i work in about 20 minutes away has at least moderate to above average speeds so hoping to move there eventually. My work has great internet lol
Arby's - for when your stomach just needs a little punishment.
lol whats wrong with arbys
Bruh, Arby's is dooooope

I’ve used JetBlue’s FlyFi before... I used it to watch an LTT video, 720p, 0 buffering. (1080 wouldn’t work. It was on an e190 too, which only has about 100 people on board, versus the average 737 Linus was talking about which has 160)
I was on Southwest Airlines a few months ago, and they had on-board services to watch certain TV shows that were aired that same day (on your phone), so I'm not sure if that's the same thing, but it is a very nice thing to have on an 8-hour flight.
SpaceX wants to deply over 2,000 satelites to provide gigabit internet to everyone.
SpaceX wants to do a lot for humanity. SpaceX is now officially my new religion.
I pray to Elon Musk every night before i go to sleep.
They wouldn't really be able to spy on you much more, it's just providing faster internet to people, and in more places, so pretty much it's just 4G, or something, but more speed, and available more widely, and you could go to the top of mount everest and get a connection. Also why do people care if the government spies on us, yea it feels creepy, but 1) it finds people doing illegal things, which I'm fine with, but people who do those things aren't. 2) they can't possibly spy on everyone, then watch what they are doing, the u.s government had 2.8 million employees in 2009, even if that's 5 million and ALL of them were constantly watching the rest of the population (318.9, in 2014) that would be about 65 people per person that works in the government, and they would have to watch all of them. 3) A lot of what they find is probably something that you'd be willing to tell anyone, like your favorite youtuber, etc, They already have information on a bunch of things like taxes, name, address, etc. Honestly I don't care what they know about me as long as they don't give it all out to everyone.
Just because you don't have anything to hide, doesn't mean it is okay for you to be spied on.
FatalicGamer Exactly. I hate when people use that argument. I mean. Imagine a real life scenario where a secret service agent just stood there in the corner of your living room watching every move you do. Even if you're not doing anything wrong. You certainly don't want someone watching you all the time either.
Yea, they should have a reason for spying on people, it's creepy, and again they can't possibally spy on everyone. If I had a choice of them spying on me, I would choose no.
You should try to get sponsorship from JetBlue to stream WanShow from an airplane :)
ooh dank
Medo Gabr irony
I never understood why so many people complain about air travel, as the introduction of this video highlights.
Sure, you can drive from NY to LA- I’ve done it when I had to move, but it took a WEEK, had to get multiple hotel rooms, had to spend a LOT on gas and food, got a flat tire, almost ran out of gas in Utah where there were no gas stations for over 100 miles, etc.
You are literally sitting in the sky at 38,000 feet in an engineering MARVEL, getting from point A to B in a matter of HOURS instead of DAYS.
Sure, security is a pain, but usually it’s only 10-15 minutes. Sure, you have to sit in a rather small seat next to strangers, etc.
But COME ON!! Air travel is so convenient and fast compared to driving.
It completely boggles my mind how ungrateful most people are for aviation, the engineers, the baggage handlers, the flight attendants, the ticket agents, the gate agents, the pilots, who have dedicated their lives to this incredible form of travel- not to mention the SAFEST form of transportation. Sure, things go wrong occasionally, but there’s over 200,000 flights per day worldwide. The media swarms on any mishap.
Oh and I forgot to mention- yes, you have WiFi on board since people have absolutely no attention span longer than a goldfish these days.
awesome information linus...Thanks..
planes should be wired to the ground for better speeds.
That feel when Linus makes out 5Mbps is trash but that's faster than most Australian households (Including myself)
sparrow40k I have 16Mbps in Perth
my d/load max's out @ 1.1Mb/s...In Perth... ADSL2...waiting for the obsolete NBN to come to my old established area..so maybe 2-3years away. Go Aussie Go!!
sparrow40k sooo true! I get 0.2mbps here in Sydney
You sure you get 0.2Mbps? thats like 25Kb download.. I get about 3Mbps (500Kb) download in Newcastle
I have 200Mbps in London hehe
@techquickie @3:19 when you mention fuel costs. That picture is not a fuel line, but an external air port to add conditioned air (heated or coolled) to the cabin while the plane is off
I really like your explanation on Airplane Wifi as I always wanted to know how it works.
Meanwhile in my country airplanes just serve water.
that's chill dude
Jim Angel and it's probably not even real water
***** OH GOD I KNEW IT!!!
Wachininko nah, it's plain water. Hehe get it? Ok kill me now.
lol let's attach fiber cables to space ships so that they have better internet
I still remember back in 2015 flying from Vegas to Boston with JetBlue, using their in flight wifi service. The free service was way better than my copper ADSL back at home.. it was incredible and free (also frustrating of how a plane in the sky could have faster free internet than me at my house back un Uruguay...)
one of the reasons I had and will keep flying with them in every domestic flight i need in the states.
Wow man I'm getting so much information from your channel brilliant work Techquickie

But can't play online games
George Robertson
You've probably got a ping or packetloss problem then
You could download all the stuff you want to watch before you get on the plane.
That would require a brain. Kind of a tall order in this day and age. Instead we have people literally saying "Yes! I can watch Netflix in 1080 while I fly!!"
How inefficient
flameshana9 Yes. It would require watching my latest video, best way to download RUclips videos up to 8K!!!
..Far more efficient than using aircraft wifi provided you know what you'll need to download.

USA 300KBps
Welcome to Australia where the spastics in charge of the country fucked up the internet for the next 50 years
Last time I was this early the iPhones still had a headphone jack
Very interesting video, even though I've never been on a place with wi-fi (since I usually take long international flights).
Now what about wi-fi in buses? Which system do they use?
Qantas just has huge hard drives full of movies on their own network. Last I checked there were 1200 movies and I think 10,000 songs as well as in flight wifi. (The inflight wifi only worked on the Tablet things in the seats though.)
Best thing to do in plane is sleep. I don't have to care about things like this and I'm rested after landing :)
youtubak777 Its hard to sleep when 3 mini shitters are crying as hard as they can from those tiny ass lungs isnt it?

Why am i watchib this?
We don t have this in italy...
MRGianba1310 512kb è il massimo che raggiungo xD
not only in Italy, neither in Europe
Tandju not true. Certain airlines have this, AirSerbia has in flight wifi
Welcome in Europa my European friend
Che bello, quando hai scritto quel commento hanno messo la fibra e oggi vado a cento mega porcoddiooo
Does that mean the reminder to switch off the phone during take off & landing, with reason of to avoid signal disruption at the cockpit is just belony? Since they can have wifi available on flight then why not mobile signals?
The engineer and technical writer in me is threatening to jump off a cliff after hearing him say "koo band" and "kah band."
512 KB/s is very suitable for streaming actually. I had a 100 KB/s Internet a while back and RUclips 480p was still fine (although it was called HD back then). I think you mean 512 Kilobits per second, in that case nvm.
Kbps normally refers to kilobits, not kilobytes :)
Daniel Lo Nigro
Oh, OK then. I just have it in the back of my mind that a capitalized B refers to Bytes and a small b refers to bits. Idk where I learned that. We deal with bits and bytes a lot in our electrical engineering courses so I might've just picked it up somewhere.
puru yeah that's normally the case (uppercase B = bytes, lowercase B = bits), however "Kbps" is almost always kilobits per second, regardless of capitalisation. I have no idea why :P
Actually it's writer 512 KBPS(in the illustration) so that is a 4mbps line and that can be fairly usable to stream even 720p video mostly. However 512Kbps would be unusable to do anything besides light browsing
I think it was called HQ back then.
5Megabit?
That's pretty good.
Better than my internet at home.
Then you must have pretty bad internet. Is your internet still that bad?
No matter what content you are narrating your just such a good public speaker

no pre-roll ad? is this even linus media group? o.O
dude, i flew on a jet blue and the internet is amazing compared to other options
0:30 Techquickie confirmed to be a regular fortune teller.
You also have to take into count when atg systems were put into place. GoGO and Qualcomm engineered the original systems a very long time ago.
This ends up meaning then: Bring your own router wherever you go!
you will need one hell of an extension cable
MWB Gaming lol
Eh, just wait until the hyper loop is a thing. Never would have to ride a plane again :p There are obviously instances where you'd still NEED to, but at least you can jump half way across the country a little easier.
Frankie Dingleberry Yea, can't wait to ride one, already being built here in Dubai.
keep waiting buddy lmao.
Too bad the hyperloop has been debunked and proven to not be possible.
Aviation Hub HD Not impossible, just unrealistic. Its completely possible, thats why people actually waste money on the bullshit. But its way to expensive, and dangerous.
Hyperloop is a new way to move people and things at airline speeds for the price of a bus ticket. It's on-demand, energy-efficient and safe, people must invest in it.
I flew Jetblue in Oct. During my testing, I managed to get WiFi speeds of about 15-25 mb/s. Sadly, it was too unstable and not good enough to maintain a stream from from Netflix of Hulu. Bit it was great for web surfing. There was a upgrade option, but I did not try it.

He says: "512kbps internet" , probably means 512 kBps, 'cause 512 kilobits would be kinda... nothing
***** coz apparently no one in my house thinks its reasonable to get a higher speed since they can still get online and being faster doesn't make a difference.... for god sake i'm watching youtube on 144p and that is when only one computer is using the internet. but then malaysia is a islamic country in a way
What is edge computing? Please make a video on that
ill just download 5 of techquickie videos and watch them on the airplane and i will not worry about the wifi anymore.
I've always wanted to know HOW could they make calls from their cell phones on 9/11, but your phone wont have service NOWADAYS? Were they flying THAT LOW to have reception?!?!
I can usually get a cell signal for quite a bit of the flight, not at cruising altitude but for a pretty decent amount of time after taking off and before landing.
Colin Ambrose yeah... it works for a minute, then goes out... so that's what makes me wonder if they were flying kinda LOW for a while so people were able to call loved ones... maybe?
Jeremy Williamson Depends on flight route, they have to stay within a set flight altitude for a reasonable distance from the airport for ATC coordination and what not, that also may be the altitude range for wireless phone towers, after switching of control and reaching cruising altitude however, only the airplane antenna and SAT phones are able to maintain connectivity, cell phone antennae just aren't sensitive enough by that point
my ipad gets enough signal at cruising altitude to browse the internet (not video) on most flights i have been on
my phone gets enough signal to send and receive text messages but only if i am holding up to the window and if the tower is on that side of the plane
the best way to get cheap and usable internet on a plane is to plug 3G/LTE USB dongle into your laptop with an external antenna wedged
between the window and window shade using a jacket to hide the cable and
enjoy using your limited data cap while the other suckers are paying
for slow and expensive inflight internet
just be careful the FA doesnt see you setting it up because it is against regulations
MWB Gaming WOW i've never thought of that... haha that's awesome!

Linus, don't say megabytes per second. Say megabits per second. You're a techie, so you should know this. And no, it's not just a name difference. One of them is 8x the size of the other.
what if he actually meant megabytes? it would sound stupid to say that high numbers as hundreds of megabytes in megabits and it would sound stupid to say them in gigabits too
Mirzu42 100Megabytes per second is like enough to download 50 full HD movies in 1 second. That would be insane and nearly impossible
