    You said 50 Megabits per second (Mbps)and showed the acronym for MegaBytes per second (MBps)..I only point this out because everyone on the internet that call themselves techies seems to get this backwards and I know for a fact you know/understand the difference(8 bits in a byte)just thought you could make sure to have it rite next time... keep up the good work I love this channel!!

      I despise flying, but I took JetBlue to Louisiana a few months ago and was shocked that the internet on the plane was not only free, but fast. I had no issues watching RUclips in HD, and rich web pages loaded reasonably fast. It actually weirded me out because I hadn't flown in such a long time and I figured plane wireless would be slow and we're lucky enough to be able to read an email on it... Guess that's sort of the case most of the time, didn't know JetBlue was a leader there.

    jetBlue are awesome, they have basic wifi for free on most of their flights! They're one of the best domestic airlines in the USA, along with Virgin America. Their free wifi is much more reliable than the paid Gogo inflight wifi that most other airlines use.

    • @maximiliankim-kostarev9742
      @maximiliankim-kostarev9742 7 лет назад +1

      They wouldn't really be able to spy on you much more, it's just providing faster internet to people, and in more places, so pretty much it's just 4G, or something, but more speed, and available more widely, and you could go to the top of mount everest and get a connection. Also why do people care if the government spies on us, yea it feels creepy, but 1) it finds people doing illegal things, which I'm fine with, but people who do those things aren't. 2) they can't possibly spy on everyone, then watch what they are doing, the u.s government had 2.8 million employees in 2009, even if that's 5 million and ALL of them were constantly watching the rest of the population (318.9, in 2014) that would be about 65 people per person that works in the government, and they would have to watch all of them. 3) A lot of what they find is probably something that you'd be willing to tell anyone, like your favorite youtuber, etc, They already have information on a bunch of things like taxes, name, address, etc. Honestly I don't care what they know about me as long as they don't give it all out to everyone.

      FatalicGamer Exactly. I hate when people use that argument. I mean. Imagine a real life scenario where a secret service agent just stood there in the corner of your living room watching every move you do. Even if you're not doing anything wrong. You certainly don't want someone watching you all the time either.

    • @amiri7392
      @amiri7392 7 лет назад

      Yea, they should have a reason for spying on people, it's creepy, and again they can't possibally spy on everyone. If I had a choice of them spying on me, I would choose no.

    I never understood why so many people complain about air travel, as the introduction of this video highlights.
    Sure, you can drive from NY to LA- I’ve done it when I had to move, but it took a WEEK, had to get multiple hotel rooms, had to spend a LOT on gas and food, got a flat tire, almost ran out of gas in Utah where there were no gas stations for over 100 miles, etc.
    You are literally sitting in the sky at 38,000 feet in an engineering MARVEL, getting from point A to B in a matter of HOURS instead of DAYS.
    Sure, security is a pain, but usually it’s only 10-15 minutes. Sure, you have to sit in a rather small seat next to strangers, etc.
    But COME ON!! Air travel is so convenient and fast compared to driving.
    It completely boggles my mind how ungrateful most people are for aviation, the engineers, the baggage handlers, the flight attendants, the ticket agents, the gate agents, the pilots, who have dedicated their lives to this incredible form of travel- not to mention the SAFEST form of transportation. Sure, things go wrong occasionally, but there’s over 200,000 flights per day worldwide. The media swarms on any mishap.
    Oh and I forgot to mention- yes, you have WiFi on board since people have absolutely no attention span longer than a goldfish these days.

      Oh, OK then. I just have it in the back of my mind that a capitalized B refers to Bytes and a small b refers to bits. Idk where I learned that. We deal with bits and bytes a lot in our electrical engineering courses so I might've just picked it up somewhere.

    • @Daniel15au
      @Daniel15au 7 лет назад +5

      puru yeah that's normally the case (uppercase B = bytes, lowercase B = bits), however "Kbps" is almost always kilobits per second, regardless of capitalisation. I have no idea why :P

      Jeremy Williamson Depends on flight route, they have to stay within a set flight altitude for a reasonable distance from the airport for ATC coordination and what not, that also may be the altitude range for wireless phone towers, after switching of control and reaching cruising altitude however, only the airplane antenna and SAT phones are able to maintain connectivity, cell phone antennae just aren't sensitive enough by that point

    • @mwbgaming28
      @mwbgaming28 7 лет назад +5

      my ipad gets enough signal at cruising altitude to browse the internet (not video) on most flights i have been on
      my phone gets enough signal to send and receive text messages but only if i am holding up to the window and if the tower is on that side of the plane
      the best way to get cheap and usable internet on a plane is to plug 3G/LTE USB dongle into your laptop with an external antenna wedged
      between the window and window shade using a jacket to hide the cable and
      enjoy using your limited data cap while the other suckers are paying

    When I was on a plane with my laptop, I was only able to go to Google, while every other website I tried to go to would give me a timeout error.

    On Westjet the new system which you connect you tech to by wifi streams movies from Westjet's app. The whole plane practically is on the internet and it is still really fast I found to stream movies.

    Linus, don't say megabytes per second. Say megabits per second. You're a techie, so you should know this. And no, it's not just a name difference. One of them is 8x the size of the other.

    • @mirzu42

      what if he actually meant megabytes? it would sound stupid to say that high numbers as hundreds of megabytes in megabits and it would sound stupid to say them in gigabits too

    • @apodexse

      Mirzu42 100Megabytes per second is like enough to download 50 full HD movies in 1 second. That would be insane and nearly impossible

    • @mirzu42
      @mirzu42 5 лет назад

      @@apodexse 100 megabytes is almost a gigabit internet connection. 100 megabytes isnt impossible on airplanes it just probably takes some time to develop so fast speeds on an airplane wifi connection

      Mark Borejon yeah. It would be nice, I could get a movie in about half a second. It's gonna be a while though.

    FYI the "fuel hose" going to the airplane is actually an AC tube to cool the inside while parked at the gate.

    what about the distance the signal has to travel? this has to give some delay right? these satellites are quite high up. and even though the signal travels close to the speed of light, the distance must give a small delay to my understanding.
