Your HID Headlight Bulbs Are Fading Away! Are Yours Old?

  • In this video I show you how your xenon or HID bulbs slowly lose brightness as they age. Just because the bulb is still working doesn't mean it isn't failing. It happens very gradually and might be hard to notice.
    They start to go from white to yellow to pink and they can drop luminosity by as much as 50% until the fail altogether.
    I installed a set of pure white 6000K D1S bulbs and am happy with the results and especially happy with the price at $25 for the set. If you are interested in pickup up a set for yourself you can do so here (affiliate):
    amzn.to/3dsF3Io
    I install these bulbs in my 2008 BMW E90 335i but this video would apply to any vehicle running xenon or HID bulbs. The factory bulbs are likely 4300K and going to 6000K pure white bulbs is an upgrade in itself.
    If this is the first video you are catching of mine consider subscribing, I upload regularly.
    Thanks for watching :) When you see the word "affiliate" listed beside any link in my description please know that this is a custom link and I will earn a small commission if you opt to purchase using said link. This is at no extra cost to you so it's a win all around :) Thank you!

    Hey, I feel that the Philips XV Gen2 D2S I have used in the DIY retrofit are losing their brightness. The thing is they cost me around $150 for the pair and it's a little over two years now!!! I'm highly disappointed, they lost like 50% of brightness already. So, I was just thinking about changing the ballast to see if there's any difference, but it looks like there isn't going to be any. In your case, did you just change the ballast along with the bulbs or only the bulbs? And what was the brand of the bulbs before? And after how many years did they lose brightness? Thank you so much!

    Nice video but personally I wouldn’t recommend RCP. I recently used their brand for some led fog lights. After a few months, the seals inside the housings weren’t sealed that well and the insides of the connectors corroded to the point of flicker/error message.
    I just don’t believe RCP lights are rated for colder climates.
    I would suggest oem Philips/Osram xenons, you just can’t go wrong with those.

    It would have been nice if you compared just the bulbs to each other once you got the original OSRAM bulbs removed, just to note if there were any labeling or physical differences. Also for the comparison shot beginning at 2:34, getting both bulbs in frame would have been beneficial because the camera can automatically adjust things like exposure and white balance. If they are both in frame then it levels the playing field.
    The price of those bulbs you used is much lower than the comparable name brand. Best price I can find for the OSRAM 66140/66144 (I don't think they make the 66142 any more, or is it an OE only part) is about 45 USD (for a single bulb). Considering the price difference I hope they last for you. My original bulbs have 180,000 miles and 13+ years on them. All bulbs are subject to degradation over time, but they do still work. Not saying there aren't deals to be found out there, but OSRAM is a state-of-the-art lighting company.
    It's not like when you are looking at ECS and they have a BMW part for one price and the same part branded with the OEM name instead for half the price. The TRW M3 control arms are a good example. If you buy the TRW brand you get the exact same arms, someone has just ground off the "//M logo" with a die grinder because they legally can't sell them as TRW with that logo. They are produced in TRW's factory under contract with the "//M" logo licensed from BMW. It's just a legal issue. The arms are the exact same. OSRAM is the OEM so they don't contract their manufacturing to another company. The bulbs you bought were probably copied and then produced in China. They can sell them for cheap because they don't need to cover all the engineering costs OSRAM would have spent developing the bulbs. You might see them offered using different brands on Amazon or Ebay but they probably come out of the same factory in China.
    I am not trying to criticize your decision to buy these bulbs, its your money and your car - live and let live. I just wanted to add a little context about the R&D that OSRAM and all OEMs needs to pay for to develop their products. I am a product design engineer and this issue is close to my heart. What your are paying for when you buy OSRAM or Phillips DS1 HID bulbs is the payroll and overhead for companies to produce products in factories up to western health, safety and environmental standards (both OSRAM and Philips are MFG in Germany). The workers then go home and put food on their tables for their families whose kids go to a school that teach them facts and not propaganda. They have access to the actual world-wide-web in their schools and homes, not a censored version. They can be critical of those in power without fearing for their lives (see: Hong Kong). People in China gotta eat too, but as a consumer I am going to prefer work and cultural standards of western companies instead of Chinese ones. I don't have anything against the Chinese, but I want to use my dollar to make the choice. That is capitalism.
    The unfortunate truth is when you buy cheap stuff from China your are perpetuating the copy and produce cheaply industry. Amazon just wants your money, they don't care where the products come from. You can't even buy NGK spark plugs from them without worrying if they are knockoffs.

    • @VehicularDIY
      @VehicularDIY  4 года назад +2

      Yeah without a doubt Philips and Osram were the leader in Xenon headlight technology and they put a lot of R&D into refining the technology. Truth be told if I didn't have this RUclips channel I would have purchased a set of Philips bulbs to replace them. I like their Ultinon series. I tend to install cheap parts on my car that have good ratings to show people cost effective options to keep their cars on the road. Strictly to be a guinea pig.

    • @Fix_It_Again_Tony
      @Fix_It_Again_Tony 4 года назад

      @@VehicularDIY That's fair. Like I said it's your money, your car and your channel. I wasn't trying to criticize you. I just wanted to offer a perspective on cheap knock offs.
      Over the past couple of years I've become more and more aware of the BS China is pulling with intellectual property. Micron, an America semiconductor company, had designs stolen by some of their workers who fled to China and a Chinese company called United Microelectronics Corp (UMC) used the designs to patent and produce computer memory in China. Then UMC sued Micron because they claimed Micron was violating the Chinese patents held by UMC. Of course the Chinese company won in a Chinese court and Micron was no longer allowed to sell that product in China. That's BS.
      I worked for a defense contractor who had IP stolen like 15 years ago and later we found Chinese knock offs of our product. It wasn't anything secret, but it was ITAR controlled.
      I am not a isolationist and I generally agree with the principles of global trade. Rising tide raises all ships, so to speak. However, I don't want to do business with bad actors. China wants to expand their economy rapidly and they don't care how they do it. I try not to be a part of that whenever possible, but it is honestly difficult. I recognize that many things are made in China, but if they are designed elsewhere at least you can be assured the quality will be there (most of the time, especially from companies with good reputations). Knock offs are a different category and I stay away from them whenever possible. They would be illegal in any country with reasonable IP laws, but the Chinese government looks the other way in the name of self-interest.
