@AlfieDoolittle yeah I've been looking into it a bit, although I'm about the furthest thing from an expert. I don't trust Western media on these things; they are strongly influenced by anti-Iranian/anti-Muslim ideas. The protests in Iran in 2022/23 weren't about women's education. I know they have pretty good standards for education. They were about the death in custody of Mahsa Amini, who had allegedly violated the mandatory hijab law and eyewitnesses claimed that she was beaten by police. Hundreds died as a result. I have no issues with religious garb, but I do have an issue when the penalty for failing to adhere to mandatory laws can be so high. Also, the inequality of how these laws are enforced is quite blatant. My friends from Iran didn't had to worry about these laws because they were from fairly affluent and secular communities. Of course, disparity of enforcement of laws is not a uniquely Iranian thing, but it's worth noting. To be fair, these protests are also wrapped up in discontent with the government and the ruling class, so it's not a single issue. Regarding child marriages, Iran does have a fairly reasonable marriage ages, but that does dip lower in some places to 13 with parental consent, and several girls have been married at younger ages with the required judicial approval. I'm not saying this is widespread, but it exists and is legally permitted in some regions. One can make similar arguments about the US, though. I'm not from there, though, but I'm also not particularly a fan of their government structure in practice. When I say morality, my point is that these points are used as major wedges to turn people against them. The similarities are far greater than the differences, and even the differences are highly nuanced. But, I didn't express that very well in my initial response. Thanks for pointing that out.

It was a very informative post. I always find it sad to see these same patterns keep repeating, on a continuous loop. It’s difficult to retain hope, at least at my age (72), when I’ve witnessed so much of this over the years. We (US) seem to be so far off the rails, supporting a live streamed genocide in Gaza, aiding/allowing Israel’s brutal march through the ME stealing territory, our hypocrisy and greed exposed to the world in harsh detail, our total disregard for the American people or any people for that matter. It was a very informative post. I always find it sad to see these same patterns keep repeating, on a continuous loop. It’s difficult to retain hope, at least at my age (72), when I’ve witnessed so much of this over the years. We (US) seem to be so far off the rails, supporting a live streamed genocide in Gaza, aiding/allowing Israel’s brutal march through the ME stealing territory, our hypocrisy and greed exposed to the world in harsh detail, our total disregard for the American people or any people for that matter. I don’t see any way forward with the system so deeply entrenched. Our “government” has always been flawed but we’ve reached a new low when our bought and paid for Congress jumps up and down, standing ovations for a war criminal who’s presiding over a genocide. The constituents mean nothing, have zero sway, unless they’ve got hundreds of thousands of dollars to pour into campaigns. And it’s not just those bozos in DC. It’s college administrators who do the bidding of their donors, and their representatives and senators who are owned by the same donors. They throw the constitutionally protected speech and assembly out the window and call in police departments who have probably been trained in Israel or by Israelis here. US police departments have been training with Israeli police since 1990. NYPD has an office in Tel Aviv. Those who still dare to defy the corrupt government/administration and protest a genocide will be dealt with in a similar fashion to the Palestinians who dare to protest. The rot is so wide and so deep I do find it hard to hope. The only glimmer of light in this very long and very dark tunnel are the young people. They are intelligent, articulate, and well informed. They’ve also shown courage, putting their degrees and their futures at risk. They may not be able to stop this powerful machine but I have hope that they’ll make changes when they finally replace the antiquated, racist group of “leaders” of today. Now we have to hope there’ll be a world left to save when that day comes.
