  • Nairobi is Kenya's capital city. It is located in the country's south-central region at an elevation of roughly 5,500 feet (1,680 meters), in the highlands. The city is located 480 kilometers (300 miles) northwest of Mombasa, the main Indian Ocean port of Kenya.
The city got its name from a waterhole that the Maasai tribe called Enkare Nairobi, or "Cold Water," when it was first established as a colonial railway colony in the late 1890s.
Nairobi became one of the biggest cities in tropical Africa as a result of the migration of rural Kenyans drawn to the city as a center of government.
The Kenyatta International Conference Center, the Parliament Building and city hall, the law courts, the Roman Catholic cathedral, and the Jamia Mosque are a few of the city's architectural highlights. A well-designed commercial center is also present.
Nairobi National Park, a sizable game reserve with lions, zebras, and giraffes, is home to endangered black rhinos and is recognized for producing black rhinos outside of the city's urban core. Adjacent to it is the well respected David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust elephant orphanage. Additionally, Nairobi is frequently utilized as the starting point for safari excursions throughout Kenya.
