    We need to legislate minimum number of canopy trees and separatey number of flowering shrubs per development. That way trees are built into the development plans. Also need small lawns or flowerbeds linked to the ground soil designed to provide green space to absorb rain water and minimise flooding.

    I hope the maisonettes (as you define them) survive. They add character, history and greenery to the neighborhood. Fascinating video, Kenyan Historia. In the West the financial sector (particularly private equity and large funds) has branched into the real-estate market, swallowing green spaces, hand-shaking spaces between tall towers, and unaffordable housing (both rental and mortgage). Their loyalties are to out-of-sight investors, not renters or mortgagees. Kenyan development is younger. It could be wise and avoid those very serious pitfalls. But my guess is, it won't.

    Most of this has happened in the last 10 years. I used to commute on this area a lot back then and it was totally different. Further back the Yaya towers were the only real building outside the CBD. Even upper hill didn't have high rises. However all these flats are being built in the wrong side of town. Contrast this with the video of Jericho. The bulk of construction should be in such areas where it most needed but developers want the big money in posh areas

      @esem135 2 года назад +3

      😂 All those things are happening, some near completion e.g BRT phase one will soon be operational, there is the Nairobi Commuter rail that is working with more stations being added. Why are people so myopic and fault finders? Update yourself!!

    • @umaganonu
      @umaganonu 2 года назад

      @@AfrikanTribesman An unnecessarily rude answer to a very legit question. Nowhere on the ministry's website does it indicate plans for a subway. The rail infra being refurbished only covers the city's outer limits, and it is needed most in the inner city. Any plans to build light rail in Kilimani (where this video was shot) for example? Or have large buses interconnect the area?
      A properly functioning modern city of 5 million people can't really operate with any sense of order without first rate mass transit. The government right now should be spending 80% of the transport budget on mass transit infra, not on building expressways and viaducts (car dependent infra)

    • @brayo144
      @brayo144 2 года назад +1

      @umaganonu 2 года назад

      @@brayo144 You're trying too hard to ignore the message nani.
      Sawa then, the government should invite private companies to build mass transit infra, instead of roads on top of roads on top of roads. Hapo sawa?
      Building more roads, whether its being done by gava or my grandmother, doesn't solve the city's transport problems.
