I have two of my favorite studios. Sadly, neither one of them are around anymore. ATR studios in Lafayette Ca. where I learned to be a sound engineer. And Fantasy Studios in Berkeley ca. Where, I recorded a few bands. ATR was the best drum room I have ever heard. You can hear the room on the Too Slim and the Taildraggers "Rock Em Dead" album. Oh and that was recorded on a Tascam MS-16, 1 inch tape. Fantasy was the best recording studio in San Francisco. I mis both places, but my heart will always be with ATR studios. Good talk back story from ATR. We used to do the preproduction for Eddie Money and Bill Graham would sometimes stop by to see how things were going. Bill once picked up a pen flashlight, the black metal ones. He thought it was the talk back mic button, and I used to have to watch him so that when he pushed it, I would push the talkback on the board so that Eddie could hear him. We never had the heart to tell Bill that is not the talkback button.

Could be wrong, but if I’m not mistaken, in the first 10 seconds of this video, isn’t that Gene October from the legendary original punk band Chelsea, walking past Warren? There’s a tapestry of history with them, amongst having Billy Idol and Tony James pass through their ranks.

    • @Producelikeapro

It was the walk that caught my eye first, then the hat, followed by the eyes. As said, I could be wrong, but if I had to put money on it, I’d make the bet.
Ha-ha! If you know Gene, he’ll either not remember or be contrary about his presence walking past you. I’ll certainly show him the clip next time I see him and see what he says.

Reminds me of S. I. R on Sunset blvdt in California (studio instrument rentals)... But they have no recording facilities. I sort of workedt / hung out there from 1987 to 1989 when I lived in California and the bldg took up a whole city block and it was much like this place and these places are super cool cuz they're like a city unto themselves. Celtic Frost was rehearsing there and I met Tom warrior... And Gene Simmons was behind one of the bands that was rehearsing and it was just an overall good memory of being in that environment all day long. I worked in the amp repair room with a guy named Frank Levi who was an old school fella from the days of the Birds and other 60s bands ...and he had pictures of Jimi Hendrix sitting on the bed in his bedroom with his guitar... It was cool being that close to a legend although it was just a picture taken in a friend's house.... The photo still made me feel like I was there..
And this place being this inexpensive? That's crazy...

I love the choice of mics. I wonder what the day rates for the two main studios are? Like many good studios, it's not published on their site. Big fan of Soyuz mics, U47s and Coles/Royer ribbon mics. Large high-ceilinged rooms with Parquet floors are fantastic for recording acoustic guitar too. I remember playing classical guitar in similar spaces, like Friends Meeting House main hall in Manchester, and was one of the nicest sounding rooms I played in. Maybe because the parquet floor makes up for the large room air loss.
