  • Fair Go - the brainchild of frontman Brian Edwards and producer Peter Morritt - has been on air since its very first edition on Thursday 7 April 1977, making it the longest-running consumer affairs programme on New Zealand television.
Starting as a unique blend of tough investigative journalism and light-hearted consumer stories with valuable advice, Fair Go has been dedicated to ensuring us as Kiwis get a fair go (as the title suggests). At the time of writing 2024 marks the programme's 48th year, with new episodes airing on TVNZ 1. With a focus on exposing rip-offs, tacky tactics and shoddy products, Fair Go has maintained its commitment to consumer advocacy.
This promotional trailer from 1993 highlights the programme's 17th year of production, when it was broadcast live to air from Studio 9 at Avalon in Wellington. When Philip Alpers left in 1991, the Fair Go team included Kevin Milne, Brett Dumbleton, Rosalie Nelson, Liane Clarke and Sean Plunket.
However, in mid-1993, Dumbleton left after five years with the programme. Prior to that, he had worked on various TVNZ current affairs programmes, such as Sunday, Close Up and Frontline, before joining the Fair Go team in 1989.
Nowadays, Fair Go is part of TVNZ's News and Current Affairs lineup and is based in Auckland.
Special thanks to Fred Gear - who is based in Christchurch and had worked at TVNZ and CTV over the years as a vision controller and technical producer/director - for the use of this clip.
