Though the Soviet fighter plot understood it was a civilian one,giving them option for emergency landing as warning, unfortunately the pilots of the airline leading to the shootdown of the airline order...but years later in 1988 the similar happened with Iranian civilian jet by US this time though they accepted the mistake by compensation and an official apology from their end which Soviets didn't after what they did with Korean civillian jet
Basic question, why did the pilots not respond to communication by Soviet jets? Not only Soviets any county in the world would shoot down such a plane which doesn't respond even on an emergency frequency, west try to demonize Soviets every time....they were not mercenaries, they were fighter pilots and were doing their duty. Full responsibility of this incident lies on Korean pilots, coz 1) They didn't even know that they have entered the airspace of another country 2) They did not respond to repeated communication by Soviet pilots
