    My wife and I were able to do this ride in July of 2015, and, although we did it in the opposite direction, from Red Lodge to Cooke City, I was still able to relive the experience through your video. Great job! I also liked the summit picture. I have one of my wife and I at the same spot.

    • @RobertMerz
      @RobertMerz  7 лет назад +1

      It is a great ride in either direction, and one of the rides it is pretty cool to be able to say "We've rode that". The summit picture is the iconic, must have picture, that everyone should have if they have been there, besides that there wasn't a lot of other "bike friendly" pullouts to stop and take pictures at. I am glad that our ride and video could bring back some memories for you guys, thanks for watching, and the comment!

    I took this route back in the '70s on a 1955 panhead, we were on our way to Salmon ID. It was a ride through Beartooth pass that I will always remember. In June they were still skiing up there near the summit.

      Yes, Beartooth is a very memorable ride, and on a 55 panhead even more so. However, Salmon Idaho, and the surrounding area is pretty awesome as well and one of our favorite areas!

      Hello back Willy. The fires were of concern and caused lots of problems but we didn't suffer any losses. The smoke was extremely bad for a very large part of the summer. I didn't get to do very much riding as my summer was taken up with other matters.

    Nice ride. My Cuz and Me are going to ride Beartooth, next June. On our way to the Tail of the Dragon. Will be about a 8200 mile trip. Take about 35 days to do it all. We will both be pulling trailers. Camping at KOA'S.

      Hi Jeff, glad you are watching my vids, thank you. No I don't have a video of my bike, hmm, maybe down the road.
      The bike is a 2007 Star ( Yamaha) Roadliner 1900. We chose the Roadliner over the decked out Stratoliner as the Yamaha bags are pretty small. The bodywork, the batwing, bags, and trunk is all Corbin. Corbin has really big bags and I think beautiful styling, however some of their quality control and their customer service, is quite lacking. One of the most important mods is the custom seat from Ultimate seats. The engine has a set of modified Cobra X-Tra Longs for the exhaust, a Dynojet tuner, and a set of Patrick Racing air cleaners.
      I do have more pics of the bike on my Facebook page Dry Rock Studios, such as this one facebook.com/dryrockstudios/photos/a.453336891456077.1073741828.451931728263260/907524079370687/?type=3&theater

      Great to hear, the healing, not the snow! We have been having snow in our mountain passes and a bit of a wet spring, but when where you live is surrounded by high mountains it really is not that unexpected.

    Can I ask a question Robert? I consider you a master at videoing rides. How do you get audio to play entirely through your video? In RUclips, their songs end way before the end of video. I don't know how to have songs repeat or to add songs. Thanks. Dan

    • @RobertMerz
      @RobertMerz  7 лет назад +1

      Dan, first, thank you for such high praise.
      Now, for the question, which is a pretty complicated answer. What I do is build a video from a lot of pieces, including video and still. Then I add my "natural" sounds, such as the sound of the bike, wind, water, birds, or whatever is required. As I am doing this I might adjust the length of the video to fit the audio, sometimes I can cut a bit of video, sometimes I can play a still longer or shorter time. I also can adjust the length of my audio in my editor to fit. All the while I am doing this I am trying to be mindful of how long my music tracks are and where they are going to fit. As I was building video I have been deciding what music I wish to use to set a certain tone or mood and I will be building video to that length. I also may need to trim an entire verse into or out of a song to find the appropriate length. With my editing software I can add songs as I go, it is a simple drag and drop process. Another trick I have also used is to fade a sound or song out before it is finished if it is too long. I hope some of this is a help.

  • @Doodad2
    @Doodad2 7 лет назад +2

    Thanks for another inspiring and beautiful ride!
    How do you handle the audio as you fade between sections? I never hear any change in the exhaust note.

    • @RobertMerz
      @RobertMerz  7 лет назад +2

      Thanks Bruce.
      I build my videos from video only first. No audio at all. Then when the video is complete I build the audio from pre-recorded tracks that I have (of the roadliner) to suit the video as you see it. If I used the original audio it would not blend from clip to clip, and as you suggest, you would hear a change in the exhaust note, or most likely something worse than just a change.

    • @Doodad2
      @Doodad2 7 лет назад +1

      Wow, that sounds like a lot of work! I would not have expected that as the audio fits so well.

    • @RobertMerz
      @RobertMerz  7 лет назад +1

      Yes it is a lot of work. I haven't found any other way of doing it that creates the same effect, making the whole video flow together into one ride. If I used original sound and tried to blend it at the same points that the video blends it would sound terrible.

    Robert, what time of day was this? As and avid fan of your productions I've been meaning to ask that. Is it usually same time on all your videos? I like early starts personally.

    • @RobertMerz
      @RobertMerz  3 года назад +1

      Hi David. I like early starts but for filming I do usually start a bit later. I prefer to have the consistent overhead sunlight as opposed to the artsy shoot into the light pictures for my videos. It isn't that I don't like being creative, and a turn into the light can be pretty on the vid, but while riding toward the light might produce a pretty effect, it doesn't represent the scenery very well for me.
      Beartooth was something I actually shot over 3 days and made 5 passes, 2 west and 3 eastbound. The first day was an alright pass, but it did have lots of high forest fire smoke, so I came back to it a couple days later and did it a few more times, and these vids are an amalgamation of those passes. All the passes would have been shot between 0900 and probably 1800. Beartooth is extra special, a bit like visiting the Grand Canyon, every corner is a new view, another moment of awe, and another stop for a photo. It makes it hard for doing what I do, trying to create a ride through video. Usually, on any trip, if I stop for a photo, when I start again, I ride back a mile or so and then record a ride through the photostop to use for the video. Also, another note about Beartooth regarding stopping, there are very few places to safely pull off the road on the high section. You will see lots of places that you want to stop and take a picture, but no place to do it, either no shoulder, or a 6 inch drop off the pavement. Beartooth is not really that far through, 65 miles from Cooke City to Red Lodge, but I would plan a day for it, and maybe another day on Chief Joseph, Hwy 296. It is just such spectacular terrain to see, it deserves lots of stops to sit and soak it all in. Add a walk around Cooke City and maybe a meal in one of the saloons there, and similar in Red Lodge, and it is a day. Beartooth is spectacular, and Chief Joseph is Beartooth's pretty cousin. I didn't film it because I was stuck behind a pilot car for the best parts. But don't pass it by.
      Best bets for Accommodations is going to be Red Lodge, Gardiner, and Cody. Cooke City is very limited, so more expensive, and unlikely without a reservation. Depending on time of year, and weekends, special local events etc., you would be best served to make reservations in any of those places.
      As to a more general answer to your question here are some general guidelines I try to follow when possible:
      I do tend to film from about 0900 to 1800 to keep somewhat consistent overhead light.
      I try to be in a motel by 1800 to 1900. It gives me time to start charging batteries, downloading my SD cards from the days recordings, etc. Plus look the bike over, find an interesting place for supper, and so on. I also use that time to review, after it is downloaded, my footage. Is it good, or did I ride 50 miles with a dead bug smeared across the lens? Or I forgot to turn it on? Or? Or? And then plan tomorrow, am I pressing on? Or am I redoing the dead bug footage?
      I try to avoid riding at night. Obviously because the video is very poor quality (LOL) but also because of safety concerns and I want to see the scenery.
      I try to ride and film with the sun behind me, so generally I pick a route filming north or filming west in the morning and east in the evening.
      Okay, now what was your question again?

    • @davidjpodurgiel7388
      @davidjpodurgiel7388 3 года назад +1

      @@RobertMerz Great reply, thank you. Actually our plan is to start in Billings, do both aforementioned roads, stay in Cody before heading towards Yellowstone/Tetons. Many of the roads in your Top 10 video will be ridden in Idaho/Oregon. Going to The Sun is on the itinerary also. Big loop of many roads in two weeks with ending back in Billings. We are shipping our bikes out for the ride.

    Couldn’t help myself, Robert! All that visiting the other day between us around Beartooth Pass, I had Togo back and watch all 3 clips you have, and I had forgotten how good those 3 parts were!!! Your footage was outstanding. Will be top of my list soon. Was this all the way from Cooke City direct to Red Lodge or did you drop down Chief Joseph HWY did I see, then route yourself back up to Red Lodge?

    • @RobertMerz
      @RobertMerz  6 лет назад +1

      These three parts were strictly Beartooth , no Chief Joseph, but I do title the intersection as we ride by.
      We rode Chief Joseph while we were in the area, it is a good ride, nice scenery, but it isn't Beartooth. Unfortunately when we rode it there was construction and they were taking us up the west side with a pilot car, and that just doesn't cut it for my videos, so we will have to film it another day!

    • @DeBa1226
      @DeBa1226 6 лет назад +1

      Yep, that’s what threw me; I didn’t know if you turned off on CJ or no. I have seen in other material it’s a nice ride, but lose some elevation, and have to turn north towards Red Lodge or on into Cody. I’ll get that one in the books too. You have plans to ride in and around Kalispell/Whitefish and film Going to the Sun Pass? I’m looking forward to that run as well as take in all of Glacier National Park. Would love to see what you film in those parts.

    • @RobertMerz
      @RobertMerz  6 лет назад +1

      I would say it is a pretty ride and Beartooth is spectacular, that is a different kind of beauty.
      I don't have plans for Going to the Sun, except that we will do it someday.
      Right now I am wrapping up a couple more edits, so I have quite a few more videos scheduled in the near future, Wyoming's 14A, and Buffalo Bill Scenic Byway, Idaho's Craters of the Moon, and Sawtooth and Salmon Scenic Byways, and a few in between. Stay tuned!
