    FINALLY!!! Someone who gets it! No one seems to get it even when I tell them! Can’t count how many times my brain shut down in a grocery store and finding myself confused just standing in an aisle crying then having to leave! Ooohhh, I always suspected those lights!

    I "woke up" out of my brain fog two weeks ago. I'm 32 years into recovery after falling off of a boulder as a toddler. Apparently, I was very willful and energetic even at that age. Some things, don't change apparently. Anyhow, I went grocery shopping for the first time today, by myself, after "waking up" to a more cognitive state. I thought I could handle it and instinctively did everything you suggested except for four things: Baseball Cap, Kava Kava, Shopping List and Earplugs. I found this video because I was searching for how others felt after they've gone grocery shopping. In a word, "terrifying." I made it back to my automobile after I was finished and cried. I'm going to utilize more of your tips and thank you for the Kava Kava recommendation. What you created means a lot to me as a survivor.

    I love you!!! You get it! I'm 10 wks into my TBI from a car collision. I "look" normal, ie no broken bones (except my broken molar), but I'm so disconnected and impaired to my world. My brain is "simple," but my prior life was not, in my challenging career and as a working, single mom. Your tips are supportive in EVERY way (emotional, functional, physical, psychological etc) and I'm sharing them with 2 other TBI friends. On days I can't look at screens, I can listen to you as well! Thank you for this. This can help my family and friends understand why I find small decisions so difficult. I used to love grocery shopping. Now if I'm looking for baby wipes and nobody specifically asks for a brand or scent, I can scan the whole section for 20 minutes. Way way too much to filter out in order to find a good count box in the right scent or none, at a good price. I wondered why this stuff takes me so long now.

    Awesome tips that work for people like me recovering from protracted psych med withdrawal, not sure if you’ve heard of it but we have so many similar symptoms it’s crazy (many of us consider it a brain injury of sort and doctors don’t listen to us or try give us more meds which make it worse). Came across this idea bc my dads gf recovering from concussion and I’m recovering from iatrogenic illness and got me thinking the similarities. I haven’t been to a grocery in over six months. When I’m ready I will use these tips! 💖love your other videos too.

    I started getting seizures for the first time ever, then taken to hospital by ambulance and MRI showed brain tumor that was removed with surgery and had a stroke at the end of the surgery. The worst problems I have are having strength to do anything past 10 min, executive function problems like planning, memory, judgment. It's been 4 years now. I had to learn to walk again and I can but I wonder if I'll ever have the strength to be up and around for more than 10 min again.

    Spot on! I wear a ball cap and sunglasses everywhere...church,friends homes, dr appointments, shopping. I carry ear plugs in my purse just in case. I also only go into the small grocery stores where I know the set up of where things are located. If I can't find something, I ask a worker to lead me to the item. I can't be scanning the store looking for it. No way can I handle Target stores but you can order online what you need and they will get it ready to pick up at customer service for you in a few hours. Helps to do that and save my husband from trying to understand my list as well! I'm very interested in trying the kava kava! I totally had a brain "OFF" switch hit last week while getting to a dr appointment and the appt ended up a disaster with me unable to think or make a decision. I had no "crisis" battery left and took days to regain even the B battery charge. Does the kava kava help keep your batteries going a bit longer??

    When i explained symptoms to the doc yesterday he said it sounds more like psychological issues. I was beside myself. Hard enough trying to do simple things like making an appt and driving there myself. How do you understand what's happening exactly but an ER doc doesnt. Very frustrating.

    • @BrainRecoveryCoach
      @BrainRecoveryCoach  6 лет назад

      We have all heard that and I know how damaging that is. I am so sorry. It is NOT psychological, it is a physical issue affecting you psychologically. You are not crazy. You are injured. Remember that and don't let them get to you. Wishing you all the best.

      Most docs don't get it, they think it's "all-in-our-heads" that we're making it up. But it's all in my head, literally. I had & still have a leftover inoperable brain tumor remnant, and still at GF Strong rehab hospital, one year post-op they Dx'ed me as SSD, Somatic Symptoms Disorder, that I'm exaggerating my symptoms... I wish my migraines were made up, or aphasia or right-side foot drop, vision issues, brain fog were too. But nope, these i gotta live with & find my own way.
      PCS or Long CoViD docs are more helpful

    Another great video Natalie! I already had the sunglasses, ear plugs and shopping list figured out, but now I'll sport a baseball cap, and check into Kava-Kava! Oh, others things that help me: as I have also have Polyostolic Fibrous Dysplasia and am prone to pathological fractures (fractures that can happen with almost no force) , I have decided to use a motorized cart in the store for safety reasons - as my (lack of) balance is my most obvious outward manifestation of the TBI. I feel very self-conscious, but better that than a broken bone! Again, thank you and I'm sending you hugs.

Then when you shut down and can't communicate at all, I try to hand gesture for help, wish I could grab the pen and paper in my pocket, but I will be too knocked out to even come up with that idea.

      Sometimes, but setbacks happen too. Always go prepared for a "bad brain day" so when ur triggered, u have a backup plan. U can retreat to the car & reset, take ur kava kava or CBD oil, and try again. Or do a full retreat, 2moro is another day. Tho when I'm triggered, it takes a few days to fully recover 😝
