According to Bill Danoff, co-writer of "Take Me Home, Country Roads," the song was originally inspired by Maryland (as that's where Bill Danoff is from), but it didn't fit the meter of the song so they picked West Virginia.
And they did terribly in my opinion because it’s very geographically incorrect considering the Blue Ridge mountains are not in WV.
