Artist can just stand there and sing and make music. Your words are so spot on. Simply sublime pairing of two of the greatest singers of all time. Enough said.
I NEVER GET TIRED OF WATCHING THIS! TALENT AND CLASS AT ITS BEST! Imho, these two were and are the best and you can tell how much they enjoyed singing together. Karen had a smile on her face the whole time and when she comes up to Ella, Ella says something to Karen and I believe Ella tells Karen that she loves her voice. Awesome performance! WOW! Really nice reaction Patrick and RIP to these two beautiful and talented women.
Karen's talent remain mostly untapped. Can you imagine Karen doing duets with the likes of Sinatra Tony Bennett Barbra Streisand Dionne Warwick just the name a few. It is heartbreaking what Kara's death has taken from the world and all the wonderful music that lay ahead. May God bless you Karen rest in peace.
This was such a powerful combination. Too many superlatives to describe these women. Both of them make it look so effortless. I love the interaction 😍Karen looking amazing and Miss Ella always so adorable 💯 awesome reaction 👏👏great point about the differences in the era.
Ella's suffered from diabetes later in life which is why she was sitting down the whole time. Come to think if it Karen i think is showing signs of her anexoria. The Carpenters always showed tremendous respect to those who came before her, and the older performers really appreciated that and returned the favor.
Yes, and it's been said, and even in one of the biographies about Karen, that Ella Fitzgerald was one of her favorites and a singing idol to Karen when she was a kid. So, now she's all grown up and singing a medley with her idol. How sweet is that? Love it that they had this chance to sing together.
Two of the best female vocalists in the world. AWESOME!!! Karen was also a great drummer. I tried to find more reactors reacting to this video, but have found VERY few... just a handful. It's really too bad. They don't know what they are missing.
Very nicely said sir. Wonderful to hear two singers who never got into verbal gymnastics. They served the song, and when you listen to these women they don’t make themselves the focus-the music is paramount. Even though Ella was well beyond her prime, she had such dignity and deep respect for the music.
Thank you!!! I can't believe someone FINALLY reacted to this beautiful medley! I remember seeing this on what would unfortunately be the Carpenters last TV special. (Yeah, I just aged myself. Lol) Carpenters are my all time favorites. This video is also hard to watch as Karen is so PAINFULLY thin! I was devastated on 2/4/83! And Miss Ella's Fitzgerald, a legend! Awesome reaction!
WOW! Thanks for posting, as I did not know they had sang together. Ella is one of my favorites, since I was 7 years old. I'm now blessed to have seen this video of them both singing with each other.
Two of the greatest vocalists ever! I remember watching this special live, and my dad's favorite, Ella, and my favorite, Karen, sang like they've been doing it forever!! Even here...Karen was suffering from her disease and she still was a trouper. A selfish wish for me was that Karen would have lived long enough to do a standards album...just like Linda Ronstadt and Natalie Cole.
Let's also think on the stunning beauty of these songs, American classics sung to perfection by these supremely talented women. My parents tried to introduce me to this music but I rejected it. HOW STUPID, YOUNG AND NAIVE WAS I!!! This music is timeless and long after a lot of other music will be consigned to the ashcan of history, this music will live on...Sara and Willis, you were so right. RIP all of you gorgeous people. As Bob Hope once said, "thanks for the memories."
Oh wow! What a beautiful, loving and sincere reaction! Thank you! And this is absolutely one of my favorite duets of all time that Karen and Ms. Fitzgerald were ever a part of. This one and the one with Perry Como are both very special. And, for some back story, when Karen was just a wee little girl of 2 & 1/2 to 3 yrs old she would sit with her big brother Richard to listen to these beautiful songs by Ms. Fitzgerald, Jo Stafford, Perry Como, Sinatra, Crosb, etc. And it's been said in Karen's biographies, and brother Richard, that Ella Fitzgerald was about her favorite female singer. Karen even taught herself how to scat sing like Ms. Fitzgerald she loved and idolized her so much. So, for this moment, this medley, and this guest star on their show, the legendary Ella Fitzgerald, must have been a dream come true for Karen especially. I can't imagine how Karen, and Richard, must have felt having a childhood idol come and guest star on their TV show. How beautiful. And their voices are amazing together. Thank you so much for this wonderful reaction. What a treat!
Wow, I never knew this even existed .. LOL :D ... Love it! They are both amazing and they have their own styles. I love their own originalities .. it's such a treat. Just found you .. subbed! 👍
I remember this. I’ve always felt it may be as close to Heaven as we get this side of the sky😔 What’s even more beautiful is truly believe neither of them were there for “who’s better” but quite the opposite: a mutual respect, artist to artist. Ella would outlive Karen by 13 years. You’ll be hard pressed to find Karen in short sleeves- ever. So sad that ‘liquid velvet’ voice of hers was silenced so soon. Two beautiful women w Heavenly voices.
When I was in hs no one “admitted” liking the Carpenters, but a lot of us were buying & listening to them! The late great Jerry Krupnick from nj Star Ledger pointed out that it was time for Karen Carpenter fans to come out of the schmaltz closet ( even though it wasn’t schmaltz)! What a voice!!!
Both Richard and Karen listened to their father's record collection. Sure there must have been a few of Ella's in there as well. Wish Ella and Karen has done a whole album together.
Ella was my dad's favorite artist. He saw her at the Apollo theatre in the 1930s. It wasn't unusual for whites to visit Harlem back then. Her Gershwin book is the best.
Reactors are finally finding this buried treasure. Yours is the second reaction to it I have ever seen and, from the date, is earlier than the other. Subbing on the evidence of excellent musical taste!
You know what's most unique about your channel Pat? Not only the superb editing, commentary, and overall above standard "youtube reaction video" qualities, but also the fact that YOU NEVER CEASE TO SURPRISE ME WITH INTRODUCING THESE EXCELLENT GEMS OF PERFORMANCES that I never knew even existed! Bravo Pat... BRAVO!
I`ve never seen this, I love both of these ladies. Have you seen the Judy Garland, Barbra Streisand collaboration on Happy Days? Much earlier obviously but also quite similar . Later they`re joined by Ethel Merman to belt out No business like show business together, which is less interesting because Ethel drowns out everybody else but still it`s amazing to see three giants of song and screen all enjoying each others` talent.
Pat, to answer your question, I think it's because singers today, not all but a large number , don't collaborate because they follow the "it's all about me" formula. That goes for a huge number of celebrities and athletes as well. Again, im not saying everybody. But many more today than the time period of Karen and Ella. There are few singers today with the raw singing talent that those two women had. IMO
Karen's vocals here were pre-recorded, but Ella was singing live. Richard Carpenter has said that Karen might as well have done it live, because she nailed her vocals in one take in the studio.
Hi. Few women singers have as long a singing span as Miss Ella. She started her solo career in 1940, she was in movies, she partnered with famous big bands, famous male singers. In 1993, she gave her last public performance, after 60yrs of performing. Dolly Parton is a close second n still going strong. Check out Linda Ronstadt, 40yrs of singing rock, pop, country, Latin, light opera, Disney !! These women aren't afraid to try diff styles of music n make it their own. Most women singers now, are maybe a few yrs then fade. Their music ( by choice or record labels, managers ) gets one type of style of music rap, pop, rock etc. Few take a chance to try diff styles or have the voice. Karen n Richard Carpenter were supported by their record label n found their own style. She had that VOICE that was clear n easy to listen to. Few remember that they had their own variety show on national television. Try getting a singer(s) TODAY doing that for a season. Thank you for sharing these Lovely lady singers with us, so more people can experience them. Peace to you and yours
I wish, looking back. That richard would have directed karen to a full albumn of these classic songs, she had a perfect voice for that genre! Like in this video, "my funny valentine" and sings of that caliber! To me, one of her best vocal performances were, " this masscarade" and "solitaire!" Although they both have wonderful harmonies together as siblings and they used the overdubbing process alot, that was their signature sound, I just like it when karen just sings naturally, with out all the other added techniques! Like their 2 christmas albumn I have on cd! Richard was out sick alot during the recordings and they used producer Peter knight! They just let karen sing naturally!
Whoever the producer was for this segment, thank you, thank you, thank you.
Nobody can sing with Ella…except Karen Carpenter! What a treat!
Legendary performance!!
Karen & Ella’s voices were some of thee best in the business!
All this time. I've been missing out on this. They are vocally unmatched. :)
I love Karen Carpenter in this video, I love her as I don't know how to explain, Ella was perfect too, they both were awsome
Ella was one of Karen's idols and Ella greatly admired Karen. I miss when great artists of different eras used to sing together.
Karen and Ella are two powerhouses!!
words cannot describe these two amazing voices that graced that stage
They were both nearing the end of their lives, but were able to still create a masterpiece.
Artist can just stand there and sing and make music. Your words are so spot on. Simply sublime pairing of two of the greatest singers of all time. Enough said.
The queen of jazz and the queen of pop.....but they both know both genres
When I was a kid, we heard Karen Carpenter on the radio all the time, WHAT A VOICE. Her voice defined that era. Like Fitzgerald too..
You’re correct. No comparison to these two ladies singing to anyone today.
I love Karen’s low register in “Someone to watch over me”
Two legends who's music will live on forever.🎶
Just stand there and sing to you... powerful sentiment
The absolutely AMAZING compliment Ella made to Karen when she said "So pretty" at 5:44. WOW!!
to be complimented by ella, youve got to be really good
Karen's talent remain mostly untapped. Can you imagine Karen doing duets with the likes of Sinatra Tony Bennett Barbra Streisand Dionne Warwick just the name a few. It is heartbreaking what Kara's death has taken from the world and all the wonderful music that lay ahead. May God bless you Karen rest in peace.
so so true!
A marvel !!! More than excellent...
Wow !!! I have never seen this. Two of the best voices in history.... together...... Amazing. Thank you... what a treat !!!
karen and ella the greatest of all time thank you
It made me cry
I remember watching this on TV 📺 Carpenters special in 1980. I was 15 years old. Yup, I'm getting old 😆🤣😂
This was such a powerful combination. Too many superlatives to describe these women. Both of them make it look so effortless. I love the interaction 😍Karen looking amazing and Miss Ella always so adorable 💯 awesome reaction 👏👏great point about the differences in the era.

Two Great Ladies.

Amazing musical duo💕💕💕💕💕💕

Does not get any better than that.
I've seen this before but it gets better every time I watch it...stunning!!! Both ladies look and sound great 🎶🎵
Love love love these two beautiful ladies with their beyond gorgeous voices ! Ella , what a legend . Karen , velvet voice gone too soon
Karen and Ella also look so beautiful in this .i think that Ella says to Karen...beautiful...but I may be wrong.
Wow! I am 65 and have been listening to Karen since I was young and have never seen this duet. Thanks so much. /sub
Tv special that only aired once.
It’s just amazing… best duet ever… Karen did also a duet with perry como that it’s very good… but this one? OMG… soooo talented ladies ❤️
Iconic voices. Both ravishingly beautiful.
Great!
My two all time favourite singers. Such heavenly voices 😉
Two such smooth, rich voices. Beautiful.
The thing that jumps out at me here, is that neither Ella nor Karen tries to "out-do" the other. So much mutual respect, just amazing and inspiring!
I’m amazed that the cameras could even catch all of the great talent in one place.. legendary! All I can say is.. AMAZING!
BOTH were master vocalists (not just "singers") and storytellers who sang to us... Separates them from 99.9% of musical artists...
2 incredible voices. Could never hear this enough!
Outstanding! That’s all I can say..
WOW! Thanks for posting, as I did not know they had sang together. Ella is one of my favorites, since I was 7 years old. I'm now blessed to have seen this video of them both singing with each other.
And you can here both ladies voice while singing together
Wow! I want to thank you for this gift!
There are some outtakes from this also. What a power duo!!!!
Freaking amazing. Who would have thought? This duet is amazing. Should be so popular.
It is amazing to hear two different artist that can come together without ego and share the incredible talent inside them.

One of my favorites.two awesome talents together.wow
Yes!! Agree!
Love this !! Good old days when artists used to collaborate like this not like now unfortunately xx great reaction just brilliant
My two favorite singers!
Two of the best!!
You really need to hear Ella from the 40s-1970 before she faced so many health issues and her voice changed.
"This Side Of The Sky". Nice song title...
That may be one of the kindest compliments I’ve ever received. Thank you😊
There's a kind of perfection in this medley performance.
Not only do you have a nice reaction site with intelligent commentary, but I think hands down you have the best production and graphic design.
It's sad to think that Karen would no longer be with us about three years after this.
Thank you for this unique and wonderful gem of a performance. Two remarkable voices having fun. A great meeting of the generations. Love it. Phil

Wow! You can’t beat the classics ❤️🔥

OMgoodness. You are so wonderful. I couldn't believe you reviewed this. Thankyou so much. You're a very special person.
Magic caught on camera
Wow. This was amazing. I have never seen this before. Two legends. Thank you for sharing this.

You got a new subscriber because of the way you treated this iconic repertoire between two of the greats.
Excellent reaction. You just gained a subscriber
5:45 did anyone notice Ella's comment to Karen's singing? She said, "Beautiful!"
she actually said "So pretty"

It was the golden age for american pop music. This era will never come again.
this kind of arrangement is never done anymore... wow. are there any singers that would do this nowadays?
Karen's vocals here were pre-recorded, but Ella was singing live. Richard Carpenter has said that Karen might as well have done it live, because she nailed her vocals in one take in the studio.
BTW I adore your channel, you are a fabulous reactor

Well this is surprising!
Duas lendas feminina da música
Today it’s all about the Benjamin’s and ego’s. Then it was just love of music too.
I wish she had done more duets with other singers, let's just begin with Linda Ronstadt, Sinatra, Andy Williams, Tony Bennett and on and on
So sad Karen
What is sad is Karen is not well during this performance
