Karen Carpenter's voice was as close to perfect as a human voice could be. Her timbre, quality, and pitch were unmatched. The first time I heard the Carpenters, it was either, "We've Only Just Begun", or " Close to You". I was floored with that voice. She used very little vibrato, which many singers use to enhance a phrase ending note, but it also is a slight varying the pitch, alternating above and below it and can cover up a slightly off target, held out note. She needed no vocal enhancements. Her straight up voice was The Carpenter's success; no question about it. Her passing was very sad, and a shock, to me.

@@edwardlynch9973 I know where you are coming from. I give credit, where it is due. She had one of the all time best voices, but I didn't buy much, or listen a great deal to their music, either. I don't think sad is the word for myself, but, kind of odd, and melancholy, I guess. It was different.

Paul wasn’t the only Beatle to love her voice. So did John.
Karen’s voice was so warm and welcoming and she had a natural feel for how to use it. She waits very carefully, often deliberately behind the beat where she thinks she needs it, and she apparently did this as a teenager without any coaching. As a result she always sounded mature, never like a kid. She was also a really good drummer, which she was before she was a singer, getting compliments from among others Buddy Rich.

My favorite bands were people like Earth, Wind and Fire, Tower of Power, Santana, Chicago, War and yes, the Carpenters.

My favorite Carpenters song is, Bless The Beasts and the Children, from the movie of the same name. To me, a disabled firefighter, the song is a prayer, but also a commission. The ... keep them safe, keep them warm! Light their way when the darkness surrounds them, give them love, let it shine upon them. This was the whole idea for me becoming a firefighter, after my father, and the words would resound in my head as we were rushing to an emergency. I can still get a bit emotional when I hear the song, as if it were one of the times I held a small child in my arms during an emergency. Thanks for posting this video!

Herb Alpert, who co-founded A&M Records, had a huge hit song in 1968 called "This Guy's In Love With You", written by Bert Bacharach. It was a bit syrupy and the hook was that the trumpeting bandleader rarely sang vocals with his music. Somebody handed Alpert a song they thought would be a top-selling follow-up to his hit but Alpert thought it was so over-the-top syrupy that he rejected it however, he thought about letting his new act, The Carpenters, give it a try if they were willing. That song was "Close To You" and was the top-selling hit of the Carpenters' career. When you go back through the lyrics, you could see why Alpert nixed it for himself but it was the number that really sent Karen and Richard into the pop stratosphere. Karen's singing voice was perhaps the best of all time for a pop female vocalist. When you hear it, you know right away whose voice it is and that is a rare quality. RIP, Karen.

"Top of the World" was ground breaking and still lives today as one of the best in mixing musical genre.
In May of 1970 I was an usher at one of their concerts at our Uni. (Thank you, PLU Knights !) I was on stage right and watched her mouthing the words prior to her entry. I was fixated on her and remember thinking, "What a beautiful woman!" So goddam sad she went the way of so many other insecure kids from bad marriages. She had everything: a voice like an angel, the smile that made us melt, and the disposition that asked us "What was life all about?" A true beauty.
I also remember that every member of the six-piece orchestra played at LEAST 5 instruments, each to perfection to studio sound in every song! Plus, Richard was in a wrist cast? Genius!

From watching lots of interviews and hearing Karen speak I get the very clear impression she was a very cool and hip person. Would have been a great person to know and be around. Great energy and good sense of humour. One of the best things you can say about another human being.

She was very cool and very, very talented. As talented as she was with singing and playing drums and bass, she also showed great potential as an actress and comedienne. I wish she had done some acting and worked with other artists. I'm sure she would have had she not run out of time.

"I'll say Goodbye to Love." Sang all the Carpenter's Tunes alone-in the basement in Cincinnati, Ohio 1974. I absolutely was enthralled. Such a velvet voice!

This song "appeared" in a 1940 Bing Crosby movie "Rhythm On the River". His character was a songwriter, who would often mention a song he had written ("Goodbye To Love", of course). But it was never heard in the movie. The title alone was enough to inspire Richard Carpenter to write it.

How could anyone choose one favorite of the Carpenters? They’re all so good, but if I had to choose, it would be “We’ve Only Just Begun,”

"Goodbye to Love" tied with "Merry Christmas, Darling." I will probably die on this hill.

I loved "Top of the World" - such an upbeat song. I also loved Karen's cover of "Don't Cry For Me Argentina" and their Christmas songs.

I was a shock when she died. I loved their music and it made me cry when she died and always felt that it must have crushed Richard when he lost Karen. I was in shopping in a J.C. Penney's in the greater Seattle area when it was announced over the store speakers since it was tied into a local radio station and people throughout the store were visibly shocked and saddened.

When bulimic Karen was regularly using syrup of ipecac to induce vomiting, it wasn’t widely known then that ipecac can dissolve the heart muscle-a contributing factor to the heart attack that killed her. Also, the drug to which Richard became addicted was quaaludes.

I first heard Karen on the radio as a preteen. It wasn't until I watched her biopic with my mom years later that I discovered she was the woman my mom had met briefly when the Carpenter Trio played in the Battle of the Bands at the Hollywood Bowl the same year my mom's choir did. My mom could rarely listen to Karen because of the deep loss she felt over Karen's passing. I love Karen's voice & sing her songs all the time. As a vocalist, I aspire to be as devoted to my craft as she was. My favorite song she recorded was For All We Know. She was beautiful inside & out and her voice reflected that beauty.
