Patience has been the name of the game this year for me. Saved until the end of Feb and picked up a Koufax RC. Then saved another month and got a 54 Ted. Next month was a 51 Feller. Since I've been saving for a Jackie. I've picked up a fewer smaller things along the way. I could have picked up a lesser grade Jackie last night far below my budget, but it was very off center and part of the team logo was cut off. wasn't worth it to me, even to save $100. SO patience in getting the card you want at the price you want is so so worth it.
Patience only works well for readily available items. When you begin getting into extremely rare collectibles, it's much harder to consider patience when you might not ever see another copy.
I have the patience, for items that I'm likely to see again; but for rare/unique items, the question I grapple with is: do I have the will-power to stop myself from bidding in excess of my 'maximum' bid?'
great pickup! I still don't have a Trout Rookie, graded or otherwise. I have the silver border 65th Anni card that stays with the rest of my completed 2011 Topps Update set. I'm fine with the reprint until i can really feel ok dropping 300+ on a card that's not over 50 years old. I'm not a "vintage" collector, per se, but i am currently trying to complete what i hope will be my last complete vintage set build with the 1969 Topps set, 68 was my birthyear (done), 70 was my younger brother's (done) - 69 just fills the gap plus it has the singles versions of the best rookies from the 68 set. One of those, the Ryan, is running what i consider "pricey" along with the Mantle.... congrats again on the Trout PSA 9 pickup and good luck maintaining the 1 per week/month on the Grail List.
The reason i love this card is it is the last iconic base card in the hobby. We will never see a base card become so sought out like this again because parallels have become the norm in the past 10 years. This is equivalent to the 1980 Topps Henderson as that is the last iconic standalone rookie before Fleer and Donruss entered the market in 1981. I know people are down on Trout because of injuries but Griffey went through the same trajectory after he was traded to the Reds. Once Trout retires and we all take a step back after a few years and forget the injuries, we’ll realize how great his prime was. It’s funny you mentioned you’re shifting to bigger cards this year as i’m doing the opposite this year. 2022 and 2023, i was in the phase of getting the bigger iconic cards. I bought the 2011 Topps Update Trout PSA 9 in the summer of 2022. Now i’m in that $25 card phase as i love buying quantity over quality right now. I’ll switch back sometime as that’s the fun of the hobby.
My shrewd move consists of NOT listing two Orelvis Martinez cards before he got suspended...had them ready to go. On the flip side I bought a Pedro Severino autograph card the week before he got suspended.
Congratulations on getting a Trout rookie card. I hope that he comes back to play this season. He was crushing the ball in April. Fortunately I picked up two of his rookie cards in a PSA 10 back in early 2019. I bought two in the hopes that one day I would sell one of them to cover the cost of my purchase of $700 each. At the time in April of 2020 reluctantly sold one for $2,800. Not sad now.
I’m glad you found a card you were after at a great price! You touched on one of my big things that determines patience which is abundance. If it’s a high numbered parallel of a young star which the rookie came out the last couple years then I wait. I want to get into J Rod but not yet. His gold was $200ish pre season and I’ve seen a few sub $100 sales recently. I’m still going to wait, but because I found something I couldn’t be patient with. The right rare card (especially if the price is right and can be squeezed into the budget) I think is worth not being patient with. I missed out on a raw version of the card I was after a few months ago but an 8 came up for sale listed at my top bid for the auction I missed out on. The raw one probably graded a ten but I bought the 8 because there’s a very limited supply and I could make it work. Card is paid for but not in hand (seller dragging their feet hard which is frustrating) but I’m excited to share online once it gets here (hopefully it does).
1) Spot on. When the percentage is that small, take the better card. On the converse, I'm not going to pay $1000 for a 10 when I can get a 9 for $300. 2) I always look for auctions that end in the morning , Sunday afternoon, or other "down" times. I only do eBay at the present but am thinking of expanding my horizons. 3) Congratulations on the Trout. I'd like to have one and hopefully will one day.
Thats a sweet pu. I could kick myself since i collected for years the Topps update set each year & that was one set i didn't buy. Yep, go for the PSA 9. BTW, my vintage collection is raw/ungraded with exceptions.

Great job! You made a buy decision with your collector hat on. Now, put your investor hat on for us just for fun. If you were to sell Trout RCs in 10 years, would it be better to spend now for 2 PSA 10s (one to keep forever, one to sell later) or an equivalent # of PSA 9s?
Curious....serious question. .... If you waited this long for the Trout. What do you believe the card you bought would be over time ..... ? Why not wait more?
Nice card, Mike. I’m happy for you. Congratulations on the “snipe”. I don’t use sniping tools. I try to watch something to the end and bid at the last moment. I received a nice Freddie Freeman patch auto booklet by doing that. I’ll be showing it soon.

Big “it depends”. If it’s been burned into the back of your brain, you have the budget, and you want to be the end collector for that card then it’s probably a buy. Depends on the card and the player situation as well, could be a rare parallel or if there could be a catalyst for more price movement I would lean towards yes as well. If it’s a grade dependent price then personally I wouldn’t, I’d just find a lower grade. Is this a hypothetical or are you on the hunt for something?
