- I did some more solo travel a bit over a week ago and took a train to Oxford for the day 📚 The city was as historically impressive as I hoped it would be, and of course the university was really spectacular!
about me 🌷
I’m Makayla! I’m twenty years old and a third year at the University of Chicago (though I’m currently abroad at the University of Bristol). Right now I’m studying Creative Writing for my major and Astronomy and Astrophysics for my minor, and I also like to read and cook in my free time. I grew up in Maine and studying has always been one of my favorite pastimes, so that’s why you’ll find a whole bunch of college vlogs, study motivation, book recommendations, and academic tips on my channel. You’re in good company if you’re into these things, so subscribe for more productivity content!

You could absolutely get into Oxford! My daughter attended Maryland undergrad and Oxford for grad school. She loved it. And Masters degrees only take one year in the UK, so it was actually less expensive than studying in the US. 🤓
I forgot they were only one year - that's such a good point! And haha, thank you so much!!
This is so much fun. Love seeing what students do on SA and you illustrate things in such a fun way. Other students should find inspiration and good insights from your videos. Two things stood out. In the first place, I'm so glad you made the choice to continue with Spanish at UC. I think you are just beginning to reap the benefits of facing that challenge. Secondly, you can now count yourself among the scholars, astronomers, historians, writers, and (soon-to-be) famous people that have walked those streets and blessed those buildings with their presence. Your presence there is now duly noted too!
Thank you so much! That means a lot to hear. And I completely agree about Spanish; it's been so much fun trying to improve! It's making me want to learn more languages - I'm hoping that I'll have a free elective next year to take an introductory course for another language as well!
"I would never get into Oxford." That's coming from someone who got accepted to a top 10 ranked university in the United States. After seeing some of your videos, I don't think it's a problem of intellect. To quote Thomas Sowell: "The principal benefit of a Harvard degree is never again having to be impressed by anyone with a Harvard degree." And depending on the ranking list, UoC is neck and neck with Harvard. And Harvard is neck and neck in the rankings with Oxford. Of course, we could have a whole other convo about the utility of university rankings. In any case, give yourself some credit.
I really appreciate that, it means a lot to hear 😊 Something about Oxford still just seems so unattainable but I would love to apply someday!
jump scare at 6:21 during your reflections 😂
Also I love that forcing yourself to arrive later meaning arriving 15 minutes early
It's a real issue 😔 And HAHA I thought it was a fun jump scare to stick in there
🥰Thanks for the Beautiful tour! Again…what an incredible experience!
Your trip looks so much fun! Keep exploring while your are there and being adventurous. I believe you could get into Oxford and would do well since you are so curious. I have watched other Americans study abroad at Oxford and they love it!
Love your videos
I am in Edinburgh right now and think you would probably enjoy it a lot -- a bit more of a hike for you to get here, though, of course.
I wish I could get to Edinburgh! Maybe I'll have to try to get up there later this spring. If not, though, I definitely will someday! I hope you're having an amazing time there! 😊
Thanks! Cambridge next?
Ooh I'd love to! It's a bit farther from Bristol so I'm not sure if I'll make it there, but I'll definitely put it on my list :)
Looks so cool! I'm visiting next month with my 6th form and I am thinking about applying...though the chances of me getting in is of course extremely low. Looks epic though!
Have fun visiting!! It's such an amazing city to walk around and explore!
Foreign students taking master’s degrees are a cash cow for British universities so the barrier for entry is not nearly as high as you might imagine. Besides, University of Chicago is a world class institution. If you graduate from there with good grades, you absolutely could attend Oxford for your graduate studies.
You are very beautiful as well as your vlogs 😍
Best wishes!
Did you watch American football Super Bowl yesterday? :D
I didn't! I've never actually sat down for the game lol, only to watch some of the commercials
You should watch the English Lionesses playing in the World Cup in Australia … Awesome 😎
