Alice Loxton heads to Oxford, one of the most historic cities in the world. There’s so much history to this university city, and in this episode Alice is going to show you a few of the highlights, historic delights which anyone can see for free - secrets hidden in plain sight, if you like. She’ll be weaving between the university buildings, exploring everything from medieval
palaces to the pubs that inspired Tolkien and CS Lewis. There are grand buildings like the Radcliffe Camera, Bodleian Library and Ashmolean Museum, as well as blue plaques you might not notice, which mark a history of execution and endeavour. This tour encompasses the history of the city from its foundation by Edward the Elder to the modern era.
There’s a lot of history here, so make sure you’re paying attention! These are the secrets of Oxford’s streets.

Hope you enjoy guys! 😃We've got Alice exploring the streets of Cambridge in the next couple of weeks. And if you can't wait that long, here's her full playlist 👉ruclips.net/p/PLPYbVPqV7je9aFrONncy7mtqFJA2E3LcP
What about Hull?
Are you guys actually aware that there's anything outside of the general London area? It'd be nice to see this kind of segment for other places such as exeter, york, manchester, liverpool. You know. Other places in the UK.
@@OanKnight Is this the first video of hers you've watched? Must be.
Thank you we do. Why you cutting off Allice legs? Alice has best legs among British Historians.Alice is known as English "Tina Turner " she even danced in the last sequence.. But Taliban censorship cut her legs out of the sequence.😢😢😢😮
I visited Oxford only once in about 1988. Aside from the history and architecture, I remember two things. Having lunch at The Bear (oldest pub in Oxford), and while wandering the streets with some of my classmates, bumping into an older gentleman who must have thought we Canadian students were an interesting lost looking bunch. We figured he was pulling our leg about who he was, but he offered us a private tour of the Oxford Town Hall. We followed him to humour him, and then we were surprised when the police officer at a side entrance let us all in. I think he realized we didn't believe him, so at one point he gestured at one of the paintings and asked if the guy looked familiar. Sure enough he was a former Lord Mayor. I think it might have been Lord Mayor Fred Ingram or possibly Lord Mayor William Fagg. A really nice guy.
I am going to guess William Fagg. Sounds like him. There are several other sites that weren't mentioned but she did a good Job. If you want to dive deeper into the "City of Dreaming Spires." I recommend the book by Jan Morris by that title.
Wow...that's just so wonderful
Alice is truly exceptional at this. 🍸
Delightful!
I wish history teachers were as enthusiastic about teaching history as Alice is !!! Another awesome video from History Hit !!!
And as cute .
The problem with teaching history, especially in the UK, is that the periods and knowledge is decided by the curriculum, and that doesn't change, so you end up teaching the same things over and over and over, and it's really quite hard to remain enthusiastic about something when it's the 10th time you've taught it. However a tv history presenter can pick and choose what subjects to present and never has to repeat anything they didn't find interesting.
@@SevCaswell yep, it's the same in the Netherlands unfortunately.
Totally love the ones with Alice in them! She is so excited about the history and just cute and fun!!!! 😊
you're spot on, Kay. that enthisiasm makes all the difference :)
Alice's passion for the subjects is really infectious! It'd be cool to learn more about Scottish locations - definitely watch those.
I love Alice Loxdon!🙂 She does a super job at presenting history! Very interesting subjects and locations
Ms Loxton is another great presenter and so enthusiastic without being condescending in her delivery - brilliant!
I could listen to her all day, her enthusiasm for history is infectious, in a good way!
Fun, enthusiastic history- not dull and dusty. Makes you want to research each topic. Brilliant
C.S. Lewis and J.R.R. Tolkien were not just writing buddies but also rather competitive! C.S. Lewis proposed they tried their hand at science fiction, to see who wrote the best story. C. S. Lewis wrote the "Cosmic Trilogy" - 'Out of the Silent Planet', 'Perelandra', and 'That Hideous Strength''. (Worth a read if you have the time). Tolkien never completed his side of the bargain, presumably being too busy constructing the monumental tasl of creating the stories from Middle Earth!
Alice is the best modern story teller we have. More please
Wonderfully presented with an infectious enthusiasm! Thank you to Alice and the History Hit team! 👍👏
Thank you for including the Headington Shark! Every time I see it I laugh at how BIG it is. Another Oxford-to-Headington historical tidbit is Cuckoo Lane, it's an ancient path still used as a shortcut behind houses and shops, and very charming!
Alice Loxton -- Happiness is a guided historical tour with beautiful Alice. She is a dream come true.
I just read _The Dictionary of Lost Words_ recently. It's cool to see Murray's mailbox in this video. 😊
Interesting! I can well believe in the story of C. S. Lewis' inspiration. Oxford /Cambridge differences, such as quad vs court and the two pronunciations of Magdalen were apparently used to trip up well prepared spies during WW2.. Nice one Alice! 🌟👍
Alice your passion for history shines through in all your videos. Would that my history teachers were as enthusiastic about the subject when I was at school. I'm Oxford born and raised and you've taught me things I never knew. If you can educate a 76 year old about his home town you can educate anyone.
I have lived in Oxford for many years - thanks Alice for teaching me so many interesting things!
Captivating, beautifull and a great teacher, why was my history teacher the opposite...great upload many thanks.
Oxford is so beautiful, so happy to call it hone. Alice always does an amazing job of telling these stories and bringing history to life, her passion and enthusiasm is infectious!
whatever Alice has got, I think she should bottle and sell it! one of my favourite presenters ever because shes so bright and cheery!
We need more of Alice's enthusiasm. This video was a joy to watch. Subscribed! 🤗
Lived in Oxford for 28 years. nice place if you go into the town area everywhere else is basically just a mini London borough outside of it
Thanks. This is the first I've heard of the origins of Mr. Tumnus.
Thank you Alice!!
Crikey you must have been up at some unholy hour to avoid the tourists and commuters in central Oxford!
There's also an underground railway beneath the RadCam (disused) for moving books, a treacle mine out at Binsey (Terry Pratchett), the Dodo at the natural history, the shear size of Blackwell's and so much more.
I loved my visit to Oxford on my 21st birthday. Alice did a great job--she's super pretty and I love the excitement and knowledge she brings. Reminds me of the awesome walking tours I took while studying in London!
Excited to watch this. I am from Oxford but not lived in the UK for years.
Alice makes history come alive for me, as Tony Robinson did when I was younger. Great job 👌
Excellent. Lively, informative and fun. And beautifully presented.
My dad used to study at Oxford so we used to visit there quite a lot, The Eagle and Child is a pub we went to frequently.🙂
Always known as the "Bird and Baby"
I absolutely love anytime you do a documentary short of long. Your enthusiasm make history every more fun and interesting. Cheers from Washington DC
she has her own channel History with Allice and she so deserves more views and and subs every one here get on board
Alice. Legend.
Love your work 👍
Like having a private tour guide!! Love Alice’s enthusiasm!!
Alice is a wonderful presenter and narrator! She should start a business giving guided History tours all about the UK to tourists!
I used travel to compete at the Oxford IV debate tournament every year back from 2009-2012. Not only was it some of the most memorable experiences of my life, but being surrounded by all of that history and amongst so many intelligent people was indescribable. It feels so cool doing everything simply because you’re in Oxford. The tournament was hosted at the Oxford Union, so that added another level to the whole experience. We would just hang out in the Old library, competing in the small rooms upstairs or at the top of a small stairwell, or even in the main chamber when the opportunity arose. Seeing those final debate rounds- a packed student chamber with everyone cheering, pounding their hands, drinking, and just having an overall good time- will forever be something I cherish. What an honor to compete at such a historical and renowned place. Oh- and shout out to The Eagle and Child! 🤯
Is it odd that when you mentioned Endeavor I immediately thought Morse ... along with a very different Lewis?
Another place to visit someday, even though I am more drawn to Cambridge myself.
Great fun presentation. More please
Love Alice, will be watching all her videos!
A very enjoyable & enlightening tour if my, I lived & worked at RAF(USAFE) UPPER HEYFORD for 9 years, most loved city of England. And I toured many while I lived there. As I was. CS LEWIS, was inspired by the many fantastic, MORRELS , Pubs.
Excellent video which I enjoyed watching 👍😀😀😀😀
Tfsharing these amazing videos
with Alice.
❤
Enjoyable, and I affirm your manner of presentation.
Alice, you are absolutely a proper goofball, and I really enjoy watching your videos. You running down the Mott and Bailey was so funny.
Define ‘goofball’?
Beautiful outfit!
Alice is so charismatic and lovable and Oxford is such a gorgeous city!!
Well done Alice, you make every video really interesting and fun, 👍👏👏👏👍.
Thank you....😊😊😊You were very eloquent therefore making it fun , interesting to follow🙂🏵
I love how goofy and fun Alice is in these videos
More of Alice please , she is brilliant ,so entertaining and knowledgeable .
Loved this, so much fun! Thank you Alice 🇬🇧
You’re enjoyable to listen to and your enthusiasm is contagious
Thank you ☺️🇺🇲❤️
The fact I had zero interest in History at School but I’m now obsessed with these vids is testament to the education systems failings
Oxford is easily my favourite town/ small city that I’ve ever been to, it has a really special atmosphere to the place and you’re surrounded by history
Thanks!
I thoroughly enjoyed this video, and the upbeat mood....and easy to listen to speaking voice. Many thanks.
good video ..do you know about the tunnel underground running from the camera to Bodleian library on far side of broad Street?
1040 and still structurally sound, I work in construction and have helped build some pretty substantial buildings and I can assure you 0% of them will be standing in 1000 years 😅
The skills we’ve lost over the centuries.
I wonder what the men who built it nearly 1000 years ago would think of it still standing, I don’t think they’d believe you somehow but I’m sure they’d be immensely proud.
The love has mostly gone from construction and nearly everything is built from necessity and functionality, it saddens me.
A lovely presentation by a Gorgeous Lady
Quite interesting, especially as I've never been to the UK. Lovely "guide" too.
From all the way over the "pond" in Florida, we love you Alice!
Thank you, Alice! I'd still like to hear about what's underneath the streets.
I love Alice Loxton!
LOVE this channel!!! I NEEEEED mooooore! Lol
This was awesome! I leave for Oxford in two weeks, and this is the best video I've seen for exploring. It's also astonishingly high quality - thank you!
Have fun!
Brilliantly presented 👍👏👏
Excellent VLOG on the beautiful city
What a wonderful look at such an important city. Thank you Alice once again for a magnificent presentation. Cheers
Not only do you provide an interesting and entertaining documentary, but your entheusiasm and bright nature further enhance the video.
This was so much fun! Thank you! I look forward to seeing all these sights when I visit England sometime soon, hopefully! ☺️
Great video! I just *love* Alice as a presenter! So much energy!
Enthusiasm certainly contagious.
I agree, think the lamppost, etc., did inspire C.S. Lewis to write the book. Which my granddaughter loves!
Visited this place! Thanks for the vid!
My favourite of the videos you publish... now in 4k! Thanks History Hit! My desktop viewing is now absolutely top notch. Looking forward to Alice's next architectural adventure!
She's so cute and knowledgeable, be still my heart - love her style too, fitting for looking back into history as a seeming throw-back to perhaps the 60's/mid-century modern.
This lady could read me the Yellow Pages and I would still be intrigued 🙂🔥
I love Alice's videos. She does a great job, they are
full of great information and fun to watch.
Thank you, Alice, and History Hit.
Jeff❤
Thank you for the information. Because I’m going to London in July I will remember these great places to go too.
Superb video! Amazingly professional format, I love it 😊👍🏼
Love you darling Alice, but very little was said of what lies beneath the University. Please do continue! Love 'n Light best & cheers, Sean
Alice Loxton is such a joy to watch!
Fun and informative as always.
My history teachers were as enthusiastic as Alice and that is why I love history.
Such a cute and informative video! Thank you and happy easter! Going to Oxford from Chicago probably in September :)
what a privilege to study in one of the great universities of the world
Thank you Alice. Just perfect!!
Please do this in Cambridge.
There’s a pub where they discovered DNA (the concept of dna. Not dna on the toilet wall), Oliver Cromwells buried head, where they split the atom, where football was invented and where the first game was played etc
No.
@@Locutus oh damn it. Ok
She is delightful.
Your a hit with me, love it! Keep em coming dear.
Alice, you are amazing . Keep up your wonderful work
Thank you!
I love the change of energy in this one lol
I do love the videos with Alice, she is usually so cheerful that she makes the videos fun. But this one is missing something from the title, just what IS beneath the University? Cheers from Texas, by the way.
She mentioned it briefly when she was talking about the Bodleian Library: it's library storage. The Library is so large, it is spread over several buildings, and almost all of the books are stored in the basements of the buildings, which have been extended under the surrounding streets, and connect together. Only library staff are allowed underground. The Library buildings themselves are Reading Rooms, and to get a book, you don't go to the stacks and take the book yourself, you have to find the title and author in the catalog and request the book from the librarians 24 hours in advance. You also have to designate which Reading Room (location) you want the book to be delivered to, and then you go there the next day to read/use the book. The library is not a lending library, so you can't take it away with you (when I was there years ago they actually had someone at the door who literally looked in everyone's bag before you left, to check), and the librarians will hold it for you at that location for a week or two.
There's a tunnel under the Rad Cam to the Bodleian library which is access to students. I sometimes study there!
Thanks for that. Charming.
Alice would of be the best history teacher, class would be a forever buzz🤙🏽
Loved every minute 😃 thanks for such an entertaining video 🙃
Glad you enjoyed it!
