The transition architecture and historical graffiti. I loved the little man carved out in the tower at the watch window, but how they used solar placement of the cross to be illuminated twice a year was fascinating. 🙏
The peace and beauty of this place is abundant. I loved everything about it and my favorites were the gardens and that wonderful stone sink with the old pump. How I would love to visit on the same sort of beautiful day!
Indeed, 87, but not enough about the real "going on's". If ya not sure, i'm talking about gluttony, flagellence, buggery, debauchery in general, the VERY THING they were supposed to be railing against. And in the odd case, fratricide. If Alice is a proper historian, not just a presenter, she will know all this, but i fancy it's the dreaded producers, who'll have the say. That would be the bane of genuine historians, not being able to tell the full story.
Alice you are simply a breath of fresh air on the history scene. I love you casual, yet most informative presentations. History should be fun and amimated. Well done. Cheeres
As a junior audit clerk, I was assigned to audit the books of St Cross. That would have been about 1971. "Don't blot the books with your green ink." This documentary has taught me more than I ever knew of the institution.
Alice Loxton is an incredible presenter, I absolutely adore her humour and the ability she has to teach with such excitement and enthusiasm, without being condescending. She is one of the sole reasons I'm considering actually paying for this subscription. Thank you Alice for going on such adventures and bringing us along with you!! Ps. Shout out to those little jokes within the segments like the parrot sound, that are almost blink if you miss it but are brilliant and 100% quippy!
Thank you Alice, very informative. My 6th grandfather David fled France arriving in England in 1686 with his family although needs must they travelled separately, it was dangerous times. Having settled in Londres he was apprenticed as a clockmaker, the profession followed by his father and grandfather. He moved to Winchester upon completing his apprenticeship and made the great clock that hangs over the High Street in Winchester. Although the workings of the clock have been renewed a few times it is in good part some 310 plus years old. A watch of his made around 1702 is held in the British Museum. A relation of David's was christened in St. Cross in March 1796. I often go to the Hospital for a scrummy afternoon tea!
My uncle Bill Hall ran St. Cross dairy farm for many years. He died in 2012 at the age of 92 and his funeral took place in St.Cross Church. it was attended by the mayor of Winchester. Alice is a real cutie
I like Alice. She is well versed and quirky. She also seems like she is enjoying herself which is much better than any of the monotone videos on history I've watched. Keep up the great work Alice and team.🙂
Fascinating and beautifully filmed . My Aunt and Uncle were married at the church of St Cross , in the sixties. In the early 80,s I would stay with my friends mother, who was a matron at the site. I had no idea about the connection with Keats, and St Cross . He was another relative of our family , so thank you for your comprehensive and entertaining programme 👏👏.
Another fascinating snapshot of English history, brilliantly presented by Alice Loxton. She is one of the most engaging and compelling hosts of any history video out there. Her enthusiasm is infectious and she seems genuinely eager to learn something new about each historic site, along with the viewer. I love the glint in her eyes and wide eyed expression when she reveals a particularly unusual or quirky fact, as if she is just as delighted by the knowledge as we are. (see 9:15)
What a stunning complex. Every time I see one of Ms. Loxton's thoroughly entertaining videos on these places, I think right, now let's get John Gater and Stuart Ainsworth from Time Team in there too, to geophys and read the landscape! Just imagine what's under the ground at the Hospital of St. Cross!
This video was so well done. I visited the Hospital in October and its beauty is mesmerizing. I enjoyed very much learning more about its history through this video 👍🏼👍🏼
Really enjoyed this video. I once spent a summer morning wandering around the buildings and one of my favorite memories of living in England was driving my work van down St Cross Road and seeing the hospital through the trees. It was especially good on a foggy morning.
Love Alice and her delivery with humor is great. In this video has anyone else noticed whist the dress remains the same the split changed sides..or am I going mad lol As I said love her and she makes learning fun so thanks Alice
Such lovely tales of a place we're quite familiar with. Many of those stories were new to us, but you certainly picked a glorious day to visit. I think you would grace any building with your beauty and knowledge.
Wow what a beautiful place and what a beautiful lady to tell us about it. And look, behold a perfect feminine goddess without a single stain to mar her, no garish modern style, nor a single tattoo, feminine perfection you simply can’t undo. Here we see beauty without excessive makeup and a crown of free flowing hair never ruined just blowing in the cool English air . Our goddess adorned in the lightest of dresses that swing and sway as she shows us the way our ancestors behaved. Alice our guild with the light in her eyes filled with wonder tells us no lies, please give us more with your brightest of smiles, tell us some more of what came before. WFP
Must be nice to get to go where most don't get to go. Can't believe they let you out on the roof. I would be tempted to press all the stones and moldings to see if I could find secret compartments. Must be more that haven't been found.
Those spider webs. Gosh, didnt they know Alice was coming over? You would think they would clean up a little. I can still hear my mother frantically cleaning the house ahead of company.
I really enjoyed learning about almshouses and the origins of words! My only suggestion would be to level the footage next time, it's all strangely dark.
Alice is amazing she is great but MY WORD WHO APPROVED HER WARDROBE!? Ill fitting, unhemmed, wrinkled and hair looks like she just got out of bed lmao personally I’d have spruced myself up a bit if I were the host of such a wonderful history series.
I’d love a place like this for autistic people of all ages. Really the whole country needs something like this? Not to be like the work houses of old. But a sanctuary away from the rest of the worlds ills. I’m sure there’s a few place around the country that fit the bill? Old country houses? Former abbey’s and priory’s. even old castles would fit the bill! Duty honour and service. Grand old buildings could serve a purpose?
Hope you enjoyed guys! We never thought we'd love graffiti so much. Which bit of the Hospital Of St Cross did you find most interesting? 🤔
The transition architecture and historical graffiti. I loved the little man carved out in the tower at the watch window, but how they used solar placement of the cross to be illuminated twice a year was fascinating. 🙏
Either the little man carved into the window frame or the carriage and highway man carving
Ahoy!
Alice; she could make a dissertation on cat food fascinating.
The presenter is by far my favorite. Her energy and quippy sense of humor adds greatly to the content of her presentation.
Absolutely. In fact she's now my imaginary girlfreind... ;)

She is incredibly watchable. Plus my wife really likes her dresses.
@Nicholas #51 With intelligence too .And rather cute.
The energy and enthusiasm from Alice, i could listen for hours and be facinated
Agreed. That’s how I feel too about Alice Roberts and Neil Oliver. I could listen to those two read the dictionary and find it relaxing 😂

Alice has such a cheery but knowledgeable style of presentation. She's always a pleasure to watch.
I have prayed in that church and it is a magnificent monument to God . I pray for you Alice to continue to make cheerful and learned documentaries

Can't believe you were "allowed" to walk up the roof without helmet, harness, ropes, safety boots and risk assessment? Bravo!
Alice Loxton is gorgeous! Makes me so happy watching her presentations.
Our host is a thing of beauty who gives joy forever.
Alice really makes these videos come alive! 🥰

One of my favourite places. The walk through the water meadows from Winchester city centre is lovely and St Cross is the icing on the cake!
You make history come alive! Keep it up.
Another great "Hit" by Alice!
Really enjoyed this video. I once spent a summer morning wandering around the buildings and one of my favorite memories of living in England was driving my work van down St Cross Road and seeing the hospital through the trees. It was especially good on a foggy morning.

It’s a pleasure to live in St Cross in Winchester about a 5 minute walk from both the cathedral and st Cross hospital

Thank you. That was very interesting!!
Great video, really interesting. As an old bloke (!) it's refreshing to see a youngster so engaged in history and story telling. I shall watch more!
Ok, everyone is in love with Alice. Can't blame them.
Brilliant video and very interesting historical place.
Love this presenter so much, she's got that "fresh off the Mayflower" look. Colonize my east Coast anytime!

@Alice, so informative and beautifully presented. Do you get involved in scenes, such as start, end, and location?
Those spider webs. Gosh, didnt they know Alice was coming over? You would think they would clean up a little. I can still hear my mother frantically cleaning the house ahead of company.
I think we've found our next Bettany Hughes! Well done!
Love that dress…!
I really enjoyed learning about almshouses and the origins of words! My only suggestion would be to level the footage next time, it's all strangely dark.
superb.
I was there two weeks ago. Very special place. 😊
This was quite enlightening.
Alice is obviously not afraid of heights.
My favorite line: “See, the Middle Ages weren’t all bad’l 😂
Ikea lectern?
Back in 2007/8 I arranged for a modern retake of day of the tryphids to be filmed there ,it was a good day out there.
Alice Loxton -- I found you captivating. Has anyone ever said that to you?
Very interesting

Alice!
I just love watching any video presented by Alice! I enjoyed seeing all the graffiti.
For years I’ve been meaning to collect the Wayfarers Dole but never got round to it, and it’s not up the road from me
Miss Loxton; the enemy of Acrophobia!
Its a pity old Steve and Matty could not get along
Alice rocks!
A hospital with no patients? The Minister for administrative affairs won’t like this.
