Mozart - Piano Sonata No. 11 in A, K. 331 [complete] (Alla Turca)

- Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's Piano Sonata No. 11 in A major, K 331 (300i) is a sonata in three movements:
1. Andante grazioso - a theme with six variations
2. Menuetto - a minuet and trio
3. Alla Turca: Allegretto in A minor and major.
All of the movements are in the key of A major or A minor; therefore, the work is homotonal. A typical performance of this entire sonata takes about 20 minutes. It is uncertain where and when Mozart composed the sonata; however, Vienna or Salzburg around 1783 is currently thought to be most likely (Paris and dates as far back as 1778 have also been suggested).
The last movement, Alla Turca, popularly known as the Turkish Rondo or Turkish March, is often heard on its own and is one of Mozart's best-known piano pieces. It imitates the sound of Turkish Janissary bands, the music of which was much in vogue at that time. Various other works of the time imitate this music, including Mozart's own opera The Abduction from the Seraglio. For more on this style of work, see Turkish music (style)
In Mozart's time, the last movement was sometimes performed on pianos built with a "Turkish stop", allowing it to be embellished with extra percussion effects; see Fortepiano.
Moreover, this third movement is implicitly related to the first one, because the beginning of the "Rondo" can be seen as an additional variation of the "Tema" of the first movement, varied in the Janissary style. The theme of the first movement was used by Max Reger in one of his best known works, the Variations and Fugue on a Theme by Mozart (1914) for orchestra.
Contrary to popular assumption, Dave Brubeck did not base the melody or harmony of his Blue Rondo à la Turk on those of the Turkish Rondo. During a 2003 interview, Brubeck commented that he "should've just called [his composition] 'Blue Rondo', because the title just seemed to confuse people."

So I've just discovered that Turkish March is actually part of this sonata. I have always listened to Turkish March as a solo piece and never knew it was part of a sonata. I'm quite surprised by that.
A lot of famous pieces are just parts of greater works.
00:00 - Andante grazioso
13:47 - Menuetto
20:21 - Alla Turca
you are the real mvp
Thank you
thank you, this helps with my music home work
thank you
Those six variations are monstrous! Mozart was a genius!
Variations?
@@adonisadmirer2752 the first movement is a set of variations. Listen carefully
@@adonisadmirer2752 The first movement begins with a theme, followed by six repeats of the theme in different styles, followed by a coda.
Yeah, he actually was lol.
From all versions out there, this is by far the best one.. it has all the needed tension, slow enough, with lot of passion and love.. this one is perfect
Walking home in the pouring rain with this wonderful transcendence.
Hello if you’re reading this, be happy 💜
The Andante theme, simply my favorite Mozart .
Alla Turca melody was sweetly tormenting me for the past months. Absolutely amazing! Bravisimo!
Thank you for posting this! I've been looking for processional music for my wedding, and I think the first movement will be perfect. All I have ever heard before is the ever-popular 3rd movement, so it's nice to hear it in its entirety!
My high school made a video where all the teachers read “Oh the Places You’ll Go” for our seniors and in the background they used the andante graziozo, perfect choice!
I am 72 years old. At one time or other I have studied and performed all of the Sonatas, Fantasias and Variations for piano by Mozart. I studied with the best, and have heard just about every pianist of note too, but I have ever heard -- or even been able to imagine -- this particular sonata played so sensitively, so meticulously and so lovngly with perfect control of every minute detail, and with such sweet understanding.
Ohlssen? Schiff? Perahia? Someone of THAT high a caliber no doubt.
Thank you so much for sharing the complete version here.
Stunning, it is.
This is so fucking beautiful, my spirit jumps out of my body when I hear this song and all I can think is about flying across the world like a bird and chanting the song of my dreams to everyone. All hail the local fields across the forest of the great god, and I dont know what the hell I just wrote.
I think you just wrote poetry..
drugs are not good man
You probably dont care but if you are stoned like me during the covid times then you can watch pretty much all of the new series on Instaflixxer. I've been binge watching with my brother for the last few weeks xD
@Kamari Kai yup, I have been using instaflixxer for since november myself :D
my father was japanese pow together with lili in indonesia and always played this.
Beatifull to hear , my father recently passed away .Piano music helped him thrue the prison camp years together with children
cool
I have heard her playing this live - it was magical with a spellbound silent audience.Remarkable as was an audience of more than 3000 people.
BTW It is Mitsuko Uchida
Das ist nicht Uchida.
I really really love this beautiful piece ... Thank you Wolfy!
beautifully played, and the opening needs no comment at all because it speaks perfectly for itself, sublime in simplicity, authenticity, a gentle lyricism come enchantment of such profundity that very few can match; then, as is his wont, Mozart leaves that plane to excel on another, to raise the game, to step out in a fantastic flourish of dynamic tempo, something close to fast march that becomes free dance.
That's a very, very, very amazing piece of music.
Wer immer das sein mag, es ist die beste Interpretation, die ich je gehört habe.
Iku Miwa
si do si re re la si la do do... ahh that takes me back to my childhood. thank you for putting this out here.
Listened to Mikhail Kazakevich play this in Bristol on Valentines with my beautiful new lady....I was blown away.... I'm more of a rock guy but this has brought me here today as I needed to hear it again... Bravo...!

OMG I've looking for this piece! I used to have this In my CD. It's been about eighteen years since the last I heard this song and am so happy to have found it, Yes!!
The first movement of this piece was in a soundtrack of a video game I used to play in my childhood. Funny thing, I never would have thought that it is somehow related to the rondo alla turca.
+DeluxeLXZ I actually remember this song from a video game, what was it?
Absolutely beautiful!! Thank you!!
Well said. It's quality that counts, not quantity.
This gives me positive energies while doing something i don't know why but Mozart moves me.
Moves almost everybody
Its like heaven... only I am pretty sure it's Mozart!!!
part 3 is one of the most fun ever
5:56 my favorite variation.
A major has been described as being "This key includes declarations of innocent love, satisfaction with one's state of affairs; hope of seeing one's beloved again when parting; youthful cheerfulness and trust in God".
Great performance. Thank you Mitsuko Uchida 💐
Simply beautiful.
Medicina para el estrés.👍
Ever notice how Mozart's music always has that happy, energetic mood inspiring quality? While Chopin reflects dreaminess...and Beethoven...Doom.
Beethoven not always ... Ode an die Freude ... early piano sonatas ...
Ever notice how many people there are saying that?
This is my favorite piece by Mozart. Never gets old. This may be too sharp for A major, however.
Back again. It’s like coming home to the most beautiful and most loved. What other composition fills so many corners?
Pure beauty
Ivo Pogorelich perhaps? Passionate, vigorous ~ yet tender.
Such a wonderful performance, framed so appropriately by your sensitive evaluation. Your comment is divine!
Beauty in simplicity.
Everyone commenting on either the amazing control of the performer or the fact that this recording seems to be in Bb. MY GUESS is that this was recorded at a slower tempo and was sped up digitally.
Keine Ahnung, wer das ist. Aber es ist absolut grandios.
this is just great
Kárla Würtz is playing. The greatest Mozart player since the divine Geza Anda. Hungarian, both, Anda and Würtz.
So beautiful
Wonderful!
Scusa chi è il pianista che la esegue così splendidamente, con tanta dolcezza mozartiana? Grazie per averla postata
Superbe comme toutes ses créations ..
No, if anything the pitch would closer to Ab if the instrument were tuned as it would have been in Mozart's time.
I'm not blest with "perfect pitch," so all that matters to me are the delicate nuances and refined articulation. Extraordinarily good so far in this first movement.
I don't believe this a true "fortepiano." if so it has an uncommonly robust and melodious sound. The playing is WONDERFUL.
"sublime in simplicity, authenticity, a gentle lyricism come enchantment of such profundity that very few can match"
...yeah that's a nice description for my favourite music for CS go :D
It's the pure beauty of camping with the op AWP and listening to Mozarts Piano Sonata No. 11. But what if I can not find any spot on the map to camp? Maybe Beethovens Moonlight sonata. It tells me even if I can't find any place in this endless world and always run in circles I can get a kill. But what if I loose? While rage quiting I hear the ride of the Valkyries of Wagner. And for real time strategy I prefer Marche Slave of Tschaikovsky. But I hate if it favours my opponent. So in this case again Wagner.
IS THAT BEAUTY!!!!! Yes it is TADADADA!!!
This ladies and gentlemen is culture! :P
Wuerfelzeug what??
Holy cow I might've found the best comment on youtube
Solamente puedo decir más que hermoso además de maravilloso
6:40 ; 16:20 the hairs on my hands stand
M O Z A R T I S S I M O ! ( 3. " ALLA MOZART " ! )
Maravilloso 🐬
11번은 Major와 Minor가 짬뽕이되서 곡이 재미있다가 슬프다가 변형된 멜로디가 나오네요
Bb Major 0:00
Bb Minor 5:00
Truly spiffing!
20:21 = Turkish march
My grammar wasn't exactly correct. I meant Mozart's music usually reflects happiness and energy. Chopin reflects a dreamy mood in most of his music. Beethoven is something you want to listen to when a funeral comes around. Does anyone in here agree?
I share your opinion regarding Mozart and Chopin. However, while Beethoven’s compositions are dramatic, they are neither burdened by dark motifs nor apparently deficient in musical harmony, which is something commonly encountered in the works of other Romantic composers (see Wagner and later, Mahler). I would listen to Beethoven’s symphonies whenever I work. Funerals call for Mozart’s _Requiem_.
Michael E. Wallendorf For the most part, and not always: Beethoven is Dr. Doom in his theme.
Randy Clark
nonsense. thats what kids think because they have only heard the fifth.
Pause for a moment. Reflect on Moonlight Sonata first movement. Also: Pathetique first and second movement. These are pieces of dark moods by Beethoven. I have sat down and listened to about 80 percent of Beethoven's shit. He is not expressing happiness most of the time. I have heard and played much more than Beethoven's 5th in my life. Beethoven was not a happy man. He had relationship problems with women and expressed that in his music.
estimado amigo: beethoven es violencia armonica; la sonata para piano 23 es extraordinaria; el concierto para violin 1 es sublime .......... pero, coincido contigo en cuanto a mozart
Variation 3 is at 5:00
I can´t see the other comment, but whatever it was, I know, Mozart and Beethoven are the best, even while Mozart composed more pieces Beethoven is still remembered, and is as good as the other, so, you can´t have preferences, because the two are simply the best, like John and Paul
peacfull
hermoso

I replay this like I play my edm pop playlist 🫰🏼🩵🌟🩷💫😙🍣🐠
20:21 the waiting moment .
Am4d3usM0z4rt raised the the pitch up a semitone to avoid copyright claims because he/she got this recording from some site. He/she did this on all of their videos.
@papaguenette, sorry its interesting view what you say but unfortunately wrong ... That time there was no Germany, there was Austrian -hungary emperor and also 3rd part of this sonata was not for maroccon people, it was for the 0ttoman empire (turkish )... Finally, it is a great genius production!
Beethoven, Bach, Händel and Satie.
I am planning to play this as my next piece! Can you tell me how you play this piece??
how can someone tell you how to play this piece? You read the notes on the paper.
This is an excellent recording! Who is the fortepianist? It sounds in B-flat. Is this a common tunning for the time?
Who is playing? (beautiful)
Hmm... i think mitsuko uchida.
20/01/2021.
The advertisement begins with crashing music and a tuff voice saying, "If you're into rushing headlong into chaos ...." And as I skip the ad, I think "Yes, you fucking idiots, that's why I'm tuning into a Mozart sonata".
21:05
Could someone tell me why it is a tone higher than the original version ??
+Serena Valluzzi Things are changed to avoid copyright infringement.
Yeah
i like this intrapatation, is somebody already knows who is the pianist?
+bla bla Apparently it's Mitsuko Uchida
thank you!
Mitsuko Uchida, definitely
Sicher nicht Uchida.
Who's still watching in 2017!!11!!!1
umm im not being rude but the rondo alla turka version sounds off. ummm is this intentional. the playing sounds like a minor.
compare it to a recording of rondo alla turka. is it because of format? transposing? i would like to know. I just noticed that.
were didi you fine this performance?
so am I.
05:35
in notes , A major. But sound is Bb major. Why???
05:16
Thank you , Pianist?
Gunter Hasselman
mitsuko uchida
5:02
20:21
whutda. movement number 3 was transposed. ==" it's not in A minor anymore.
Why do you always put the pieces in the wrong key?
It's actually A major; I think I also like this kind of "High-Tuned" style.
alla turka sounds like all the notes got 'sharped'
is not in major anymore.
who is the pianist?
This isn't in A it is in Ab
its actually a semi tone between a and b flat
Yeah! It's actually A major; I think I also like this kind of "High-Tuned" style
*A#...
or simply B flat major...
la Partitura prisss porfavor
Vc quer?? Compra!! kkkkk kkkkk lol
+Cristina kkkkk
wow this piece is in the wrong key, it says its in a, but its in Bb, :(
Hired the cheapest piano tuner. His tuning fork was a piece of junk.
it's just the sound quality
It's actually A major; I think I also like this kind of "High-Tuned" style.
Caeden Pope in Mozart's time, the music was in other tuning
Caeden Pope in 415 Hz.
so simple and yet only mozart could have written it - poor salieri...ha
the trio is in D major...
And ?
darknarga2000 He is correcting the description of the video.
alessio delli castelli Many Movements Change Keys, For Example the Rondo Begins In C Major, But the Ending of all 3 end with A A major Chord.
Gregory Borton mi pal
it's not at the original scale!!
432 tuning I believe
449 or 450 I'd say
Tomer Domany 415 Hz. In the 18th century the music was tuned of this way.
