For all its faults, we can all agree that the scene of Blackout transforming and wiping out a military base was one of the most badass things we’d ever seen
@@Cathywhales Hundreds of Decepticons with warships and air support eventually got their asses handed to them by 9 Autobots and small US Army detachments. Decepticon soldiers were more easily disposed of than goons in John Wick. In TF1 you had equal numbers on both sides giving each other a hard fight
Obligatory note that the whole "Energon is booze" thing was one specific case of energon being made out of something unusual. Normally it is just regular fuel, like water to them.
I’ll never forget being 10 years old going to the theater and watching Blackout just rip through that military base and being in absolute awe. I had never seen special effects like that or experienced anything like it before.
this. i remember when my brother came to my room and told me he saw a trailer for a transformer movie. I was like, "are they going to look like megazords?" because i hadnt even imagined cgi could make real looking transformers yet. Then after i saw the movie, and researching the sheet amoount of work put into the models, it got me interested in 3d modeling.
When we went to the theater and I was around 12, I was already very much familiar with Transformers and their old designs (I was a huge fan of the OG, Beast Wars and Armada), so seeing Blackout just go complete fucking ape mode on the military literally stopped me from blinking for the duration of that whole sequence.
As a kid who never knew transformers existed until i saw the first movie, The Raid on the Airbase with Blackout LITERALLY gave me the strength to watch all the films to find that same vibe
That first transformation... I was hooked. The animation, the sound design, the camera work. I honestly think it's one of the best moments in cinema, and what comes directly after with the utter devastation and mercilessness of it all just kept adding to it. This movie has many scenes like it, but non of them can top the first one, the reveal. I'm getting chills again haha
The menacing dread the Decepticons had in the first movie is something many recent movies fail to do, making the villains actually threatening. The decision to make the Decepticons actually destructive instead of the dumbasses they were in G1 was the best they could’ve gone with in my opinion. The Blackout introduction really did this the best. Sucks that they were done absolutely terrible and made jokes in the following movies.
@@Anton-qc1fk theres good reason that the story that Transformers Prime and Transformers War for Cybertron both tell are heavily based on Michael Bay's Transformers, and not IDW Comics or Armata. while Armada has the objective best version of Starscream and the most interesting dynamic between Megatron and Optimus, Bay has the most dynamic backstory in his version of the universe and the characters, barring bumblebee who is actually Rodimus/hotshot that allows it to be refined again and again.
The series might just get worse from here on out, but something about the idea of Optimus Prime wielding Excalibur while riding a gigantic metal dragon and leading a siege on a flying alien fortress will never not sound like a stupidly amazing idea.
The series has a lot of sweet ideas but somehow Bay manages to either fuck it up or not do it at all. He had the Dinobots on screen and they were window dressing in the fifth movie. That's just insulting.
You nailed the feeling of seeing a transformer on the big screen for the first time. When everyone started shooting, and it did nothing, and this chopper is turning into a death machine, I lost it.
Oh yeah, when they hade to break out the AC130 and "bring the rain" just to leave a mark on the fucker, i was like "how tf are they gonna beat these things?"
I pretty sure at that point they probably had cybertronian tech to help out or something, but I agree they from hard to kill to easily dispatch by humans
@@kaelkirkby9191 Don't even need to cut to the 4th film for that; Blackout was killed by Lennox doing a cool slide with his gun out. Apparently nobody at SOCCENT thought to use their underslung grenade launcher in the first act.
The whole, "steal Earth's energy" thing... If this space faring race had realized that they could just set up solar panels around a star, It would have blown their Primus-damned minds.
well I think energon is made differently then in the cartoon since it's no longer just condensed energy I think the star harvester does something special to make the star an energon mine but that's just a theory a prime theroy
@@mr.breadman4181 In the original cartoon, they can use any energy to make Energon. Nuclear power and fossil fuels like oil are shown, but the Autobots also use hydroelectric power in the 80's movie. The Star Harvester is a Bayverse thing.
Transformers in 2007: what a mindless soulless corporate cash grab. Transformers now: Whoa, they crashed a REAL car and it made a REAL explosion with REAL fire?
Funny how the times change. I honestly find it shocking how people saw this as schlocky garbage despite how compelling and great the plot and moments are
@@Tom-jy6mcI mean again. This is the bayformers, and I’ll make a hot take and say I grew up around revenge of the fallen being released so I have a lot of nostalgia towards it. Meaning I’m probably the only person on the planet that gave it above a 6/10
@@Tom-jy6mc "I honestly find it shocking how people saw this as schlocky garbage" Which it is, but now that the outrage has cooled down and everyone has moved on to the next worst thing, it's easier to point out the good parts.
@@GabrielWard-yu6sk I mean I grew up watching Transformers Cybertron, but otherwise all I've seen is Bayformers(well, until recently), and I was actually really surprised when I eventually found out that transformers fans hate them(though I do totally get hating 4 and 5)
While I agree with the criticism that the Bayformers designs are hard to look at sometimes, I do appreciate that they have a wide variety of basic shapes and silhouettes. They don’t all share the same basic block robot body like the original cartoons.
Yeah but I wish the decepticons looked more like there original designs at least a little bit there basically unrecognizable (except like shockwave but that's just because the kept his one eye)
Honestly I like how the Bumblebee movie handled it, streamlining bay designs and updating G1 designs to hit that sweet spot middle ground. My biggest complaint about the designs was that the overcomplexity probably limited cast size and lead to us seeing a lot of reused designs in the sequels.
Say what you want, but all of the CGI in every Bay Transformers film is mind blowing. The Battle of Chicago is like a vision of a 1930s Italian futurist.
Glad to see someone bring that up about Bay films, the effects were done practically if possible and he has a great record of safety on set even though many of the stunts are dangerous. For as bad as he is and was at writing and comedy he's as good at practical effects and filming action scenes. Idk why he hasn't just been brought on sets for action and have another director for plot and writing.
Imagine pairing him with someone who knows how to write like... Huh... Real life films don't have many of those. Maybe one of the wachowski sisters? But they're pretty good with action themselves and I'd argue they're one of the few who did CGI right in it's early days (referring to speed racer not matrix)
You don't need a director for plot and writing... That's the screenwriter's job. Give Michael Bay a well written screenplay and he will give us an action movie masterpiece.
The guy has reportedly a massive ego. He probably insisted on it. John Turturro went on record saying he based his portrayal of Simmons on how Bay behaved on set, which gives us a rough idea on what he's like.
Honestly I loved the designs for Optimus and Bumblebee, I see why long time fans were upset but 8 year old me was so hype seeing Optimus with flames. The designs were probably one of the only redeemable aspects in my opinion
We also gotta think about time periods. I don't think a mainstream (as in, people who aren't blatant Transformers fans) audience would be too invested in the G1-esque designs at that time period. That was still in the 2000s, and back then everything had to be cool. And I know people by the dozens who would have been ignorant enough to just not watch Transformers due to those designs. You really had to pull the wool over people's eyes to get them to do things. Bumblebee made it work thanks to better technology andnactually combining G1 designs with Bay designs to make a new, but still familiar aesthetic. On another note, Bumblebee itself mainly really works because Bay's Transformers "didn't work." This is a bit of a side rant, but while I understand people not liking Bayformers, I can't lie to people and say that those movies didn't do their job. The Bayverse did its job. And honestly, for a Transformers movie, I really don't expect much beyond cool fights and explosions and scenes like the forest battle of RotF and many scenes in Dark of the Moon deliver that kind of action. Though I am looking forwards to the new Transformers movies going on, with the loss of Michael Bay as director, a lot of the action probably isn't going to hit as hard. And while one can say, "We'll get better stories," if I'm being honest, this is Transformers, and despite having good stories in various TV shows and comics, I doubt a moving story is gonna happen when selling toys is the main motive. Bumblebee's story was okay, but it's in a situation where it's similar to movies like a Monster Truck or E.T. in regards to premise with not as much action for a payoff. It's not bad, but it's not great either. I do appreciate the designs, however.
I think the flames were really cool too. It helped I saw the movie from a car enthusiasts point-of-view and loved the vehicles they used for the Autobots. Really got me to notice and appreciate tricked-out Semi's
I still hate bumblebees baby pacifier-looking mouth. I assume it's just so they don't have to animate his mouth going through different accents and tones, but it still looks dumb. Just give him a faceplate or something
Dark of the Moon will always stand as my favorite of the Bayformers movies. Mostly because Michael Bay was given the entire city of Chicago to use as a giant sandbox.
For a second I legitimately thought your username was implying that you ran a channel entirely devoted to conspiracy theories than trans people made XD. I don’t know why it took me so long to make the *proper* connection to TRANSformers.
Same i love and hate these movies haha I feel like transformers in general is neglected now of days in light of superheros and such, i hope transformers makes a come back i miss the days of transformers 07 and transformers prime, the excitement i got for each movie and episode , the cool toys, hell remember those cool transformers games the cybert4on ones even the movie ones were fun but cringe sometimes, man I hope this franchise goes through a huge revival
Despite the movies being bad, man the cgi for the transformer characters still holds up to day. Despite people hating the designs I love the alien cyborg aesthetic from 1-3 it’s is pretty unique compared to the humanoid characters we had in the other alterations of the franchise
I will forever defend the 2007 film. It's got stupid jokes, and debatable designs, but in terms of introducing the Transformers, the storyline is perfect. Like you said, the movie emphasizes how they're "robots in disguise". The movie doesn't start on Cybertron. It starts on earth, in the perspective of the humans. A familiar perspective. As for the Transformers themselves, we hardly even see them as characters until halfway through. And that's good. It makes them mysterious for the first half. They're hiding everywhere. As for the rest of the movie, I believe the only character that doesn't get named is Frenzy (and Brawl, kinda... but that's a complicated discussion). This all is the perfect setup for a series of movies following the Autobots themselves, with Sam maybe being in a subplot. ...unfortunately, that didn't happen. The human to Transformer ratio remained the same for the rest of the films for no reason regarding the actual story. The Transformers aren't kaiju. They're characters too, that can hold their own story. The "disaster movie" aspect of Bay's Transformers that you mentioned really dampened the rest of the series. Good video.
the 2007 movie is unironically my favorite singular film of all time (my favorite film series is the Hobbit movies), its what got me into rock music and Transformers and helped shape my entire childhood personality
Something I both love about the first film, and the cartoon that ran alongside it, Transformers Animated, is that the Decepticons felt like _threats._ They weren't punching bags, when one showed up it was a big deal, and the fight in Mission City encapsulates the feeling of actual teamwork and strategy (the part where Brawl is getting hammered by Jazz, Ironhide and Ratchet comes to mind). If it was a one on one fight, unless if the two characters were extremely comparable in weight class, one would be getting decimated by the other, as seen in Prime vs Megatron's fight. I much prefered that approach where they were on the backfoot over the extreme hand to hand fighting always going in the Autobots favor as seen in the later films and other Transformers series also, even if quite a few of these fight sequences were cool.
Jazz didn't have the most character, but Megatron just ripped him in half with barely any effort. It emphasized hard just how outgunned our heroes were and why Megatron returning was a nightmare scenario. That's how you do a villain.
And then they make him in transformers 5 BEG for his allies to be freed from jail From all thing they had done, wizards and this particular scene is the worst of all
@@3takoyakis not even as far as 5; Megatron gets bodied at the end of both 2 and 3 by Optimus basically having a perpetual psychotic breakdown. Optimus is now just putting in the effort to properly fight his ultimate nemesis that's probably slaughtered countless people?
Every post Transformers (2007), pre Bumblebee (2018), even the TMNT (2014) reboot had the same problem: They sidelined the heroes, and made the films all about the human characters. I always hated that. If our heroes aren't the center, or at least the focus of their own movie, then what kind of movie are you even making? It's like if you made a Spider-Man film, titled it a Spider-Man film, marketed it as a Spider-Man film, but the whole film is about Mary Jane, and Peter only swings in when it's time to save the day. Does that make for a good movie? Probably not. Does it make for a good Spider-Man movie? Definitely not.
I remember, long before even the 2007 movie came out, discussions about how this movie will look. Some people were sceptic, saying that TF2007 is going to be a story about a boy, who gets a girlfriend, and it happens to have a fighting robots by the way. Who knew that story of Bayfromers could be even worse and more convulted with every entry.
I've had the same problem with some live action movies, I was watching sonic with my little brother and I was like why is it showing the human characters idgaf about them I'm here for sonic. Glad I'm not the only one who find this trope annoying
@@personwitharat9039 nah sonic was pretty important. At least more than the ones we’re talking about. Like sonic had an arc and did more than show up to fight. The entire opening of the movie was about Sonic having to leave his home.
Bumblebee wasn’t exactly better. Yea they got rid of the unnecessary stuff and had the G1 designs, but the movie is boring. Bumblebee does nothing and the plot is focused mainly on the girl and her boyfriend. It tried to have PG comedy moments that were so stale it felt like a 00’s Disney movie. Bumblebee is a complete pussy and does nothing but hide and goof around. The only time he does something is in the opening and the ending. I feel like people only consider it better because it has G1 Optimus Prime
It was the same in G1 too, for the most part at least. Optimus Prime was surrounded by VW beetles, ambulances, and police cars while Megatron himself was a gun surrounded by fighter jets
You know how people gave Bay so much grief about his explosions? In a land riddled with CGI fights where, let's be honest, it's nothing *but* CGI, I gotta tell you guys, I kinda miss it.
Robot designs looked badass, fight scenes were awesome, and literally every villain (especially lockdown) had the most terrifying presence, might just be my opinion but if you prefer the “bumblebee” movie over that, your crazy
@@byohen1752 how is the fallen terrifying, he doesn't fight anyone but ancient humans with sticks and some human jets before being slaughtered by optimus

On the surface level it sounds like your average Hollywood blockbuster generic action music, but there's a reason they brought back those amazing melodies in Rise of the Beasts, it's become iconic
I loved the Transformers movies at least they didn't do the whole "Character's toy has been discontinued = kill off the characters" which kinda seems soulless
I hate to break it to you, but they killed off the old cast and replaced them with new bots in the 4th and 5th movies. And whoever survived just got a new redesign to sell their toys
@@blockocraft1920 yes, I comletely agree. They should've stuck with Evasion mode Optimus design and Black Bumblebee design for those movies and they should've just been about evading human hunters. Could've been a really suspenseful spinoff series

I have analysed CGI in movies for quite some time and this movie somehow just hits right, all the transformers feel like actual glistening objects in the shot. @@ischwhit6747 What? Buddy you're confusing. You were saying the CGI in Transformers 2007 holds up and I was agreeing with you and now you hit me with a "err you're wrong" like what do you want?
Out of all the Michael Bay Transformers franchise, this first film is the only one that feels like it has a sense of purpose and magic. It’s the only one I, ever few years, think about rewatching. It might be a basic story and all, but the effects and characters really stick the landing. It was also my first impression of Transformers, as I knew they existed, but never watched it when I was a kid. Besides the pictures and short clips on RUclips, these iterations are the ones I had. Thank god, I like the bumble aesthetic more than I like these past the first film.
I know, it somehow doesn't feel like a whore watching it like the other four. It has a beginning, middle and end, and ties everything up at the end with little bullshit. The soundtrack was beautiful, and the Arrival scene was amazing.
@@kira-dk2mx I mean the second one had a lot of cringy scenes and lines but still cool over the top action the forest fight when Optimus takes on 3 decepticons one 3 times his size yelling “I’ll take you all on” hype af. Transformers 3 the first part just dumb but goddamn the action at the end is peak Hollywood.
That bit about red paint is actually really interesting and gives Optimus an excuse for his new design. Ironhide could have just been renamed Trailbreaker, who is an original season character who turned into a black Toyota hylux(aka a pickup truck). Would have been one less controversy
I was looking for this comment, thank you. The original designs CAN be done well. And I don't buy the whole "lighting red is hard" BS. In "Bumblebee", wasn't one of the decepticons bright RED?
@@ChineduOpara It's more of a problem with Michael Bay's style of color grading in 2007. It's very distinct and stylized, but it also exaggerates the color red _really_ hard, which looks great for small pops of colors like Megatron's red eyes for example, but anything big looks extremely garish and harsh. But starting with _Dark of the Moon_ the series took on a took on a less exaggerated color grade, hence why we suddenly got Leadfoot, Dino, and Sentinel Prime (all bright red) in that movie
This movie if you watched it as a kid, is simply mind melting. I remember watching the intro and pretty much every action scene after and was absolutely blown away by the effects and the sound design was absolutely incredible.
NGL, I think Transformers Prime took almost a perfect approach to the Decepticon Aesthetic that the movie sequels completely dropped the ball on. The grey Cons hid their colors as their interiors (Starscream and Soundwave come to mind), Megatron’s polished iron felt intentionally minimalist as a pragmatic former-gladiator, the foot soldiers were stealthy black SUVs, Knockout’s bright red was integrated into his personality They felt militaristic and intentional without losing their distinct colors and silhouettes
Yeah, Knockout and his obsession with having a shiny finish...but Megs in 'Prime'==yeah, not only did we have Frank Welker voicing him, but THIS Megs had virtually no weaknesses and could ramp up the threat without even raising his voice--as a veteran gladiator would be.
Revenge of the Fallen was meh but still had some cool concepts and great fight scenes ( ie Optimus Prime vs Megatron and his goons in the forest) and Dark of the Moon well I mean Optimus wrecking shit, that worm thing, and race cars with machine guns. Oh and that whole wing suit thing and sliding on the collapsing skyscraper.
Because it was, the Transformers series really was never meant to exist, it only was going to be the one. They kept adding onto it and obviously they had no plans for an interconnected storyline so they just winged it.
These scenes still reignite the 9 year old in me. It’s just so over the top and ham fisted military hardware porn that I just can’t help but smile at it.
@@FOAB-Carlos The main rotary cannon of the A-10 is extremely inaccurate, and often gives too wide of a berth when firing. The pilots don't have any proper sensors for detecting land foes, either, so they mostly have to look out of their cockpit, furthering hindering how accurate they can be.
To me Bayformers franchise is a good example of “This is what happens if the studio gives a director too much freedom of what he/she wants to do”. I think first one was fine because Paramount was like, “Hey, we’re gonna give you this amount of budget so that you can make a movie you want to make, but you have to make it under some of our rules and restrictions. Okay?” Then when the first film did well, Paramount was like, “You know, you made a lot of money at the box office. And because of that, we’re gonna let you do whatever you want! We’ll give you locations, sets and all the budgets you need! Now go crazy and make us some money!” I might be stretching this, but just saying my opinion🤷♂️
it also doesn't help that by the 2nd movie there were writer's strikes so it made the script extra bad and by the 4th and 5th movies Bay didn't want to be a part of it at all but finally caved after enough pushing from the studio
A sense of effort and talent backing up a 2007 blockbuster is a sight to behold. Even a Netflix action flick lacks such a charm that transformers despite being a mix bag of a franchise dumps so hard on movies that are coming now.. It's all a green screen mess of a shit. Thank God we have nolan, Scott, coppola for now.. Otherwise Hollywood is dead for sure
I can't hate Bayformers one. I went to see it with a little boy who loved transformers and was slowly dying and eventually didn't even make his mid teens. It brightened up his day, and I'm eternally grateful for that.
It helps that Steven Spielberg was involved in the production of the first one, and the whole "boy and his alien friend" comes from him than Michael Bay. Once he left it was all on Bay and you can see just how insane they turn without a storytelling person in the writing room. I have a bit of nostalgia for the 1st one since it was my last free summer before I got a job and Linkin Park in the soundtrack was cool, even if the albums were also hated by old TF fans who wouldn't shut the fuck up about wanting Stan Bush back along with other old 80's Dinosaur bands. I was really defensive when it came to these movies Vs. Angry TF fans and Critics. But looking back I think it was mostly cause there wasn't a more spectacular scifi series until the MCU came into existence and showed the world that a action summer blockbuster could be more than just explosions, jock humor and the camera going up a Super model's ass.
I mean, the first movie was definitely all three of those things. You could replace Megan fox with a blowup doll (no offense to Megan fox, she seems like a very nice woman who was typecast as "hot bimbo" for years which sucks) and it wouldn't change much of anything
@@socksleeve Let's face it, Meagan Fox was simply slotted into the story to encourage those Lads (and Lesbians with good taste) who either weren't TF fans, old enough to remember the originals, or simply sat firmly on the fence, into going to the cinema/buying the home media. "Meh, it's robots beating the shit out of each other... But it's got Fox dressed in skintight jeans and crop-top bent double under the hood of a car... OK, I'm in."
Well that explains what happened after the first. I felt the first did a better job at world building and going quite all crazy as the later ones would be
I could see the Autobots having more humanoid faces vs the Decepticons having alien features being explained as the Autobots trying to arrange their features to be a bit more “familiar” or hospitable to humans but end up falling short because… they’re not human. They’re just mimicking human features. Whereas the Decepticons wouldn’t give a fuck and either look like whatever they “naturally” look like, intentionally make themselves look more horrifying to terrify their human opposition, or perhaps even model themselves after other alien species in the galaxy.
I also like to think of it as the decepticons intentionally favoring more inhuman monstrous faces, much like how many cultures would use shields/masks with faces molded into them
You think nostalgia is your ally? You merely adopted Transformers. I was born in the Michael Bay Transformers, molded by them. I didn't see the 80s cartoons until I was already a man, by then it was nothing to me but a baby show!
Grew up with both and I like both. First Bayformers is still a solid film as an adult, and while G1 isn’t always the best in retrospect, I love the characters and world that was created as well as some of the unintentionally funny/corny moments. There’s so much that could be done with this franchise and I wish that it received more love and better care.
The first Transformers movie blew my mind when I saw it as a 12 year old. It's still a good, fun movie to this day. The action and transformers are great, the writing isn't that annoying, and has a pure mid 00s vibe, before everything went downhill. Also the Linkin Park song at the end is really good

I get what you're trying to say with "each one is worse than the last", but we can all at least agree that Dark of the Moon was way better than Revenge of the Fallen, right? Like, I actually thought that the franchise was either finishing strong or back on the upswing before Age of Extinction came out.
I think it would’ve been a perfect place to end the trilogy, and what followed should’ve been a full reboot instead of the dumpster fires that were AOE and TLK
5:55 I paused when you brought up the fan forum page and I was honestly surprised at how positive the comments were. These absolute geeks were literally like "if it has robots that turn into cars I'll be stoked." Really makes you think about the current state of fan culture.
The transformers series is a gigantic example of dumb fun and epic battles. And for a 10-year-old that was it. I still love the bay transformers and I will continue to love them and I hope you person give it chance and have fun with it.
The movies are like that sure, but they are pale imitations of the absolute insanity that is the shows. G1 has unironically amazing writing. The characters are iconic, truly. Like Starscream is so untrustworthy that he made a deal with Satan and *betrayed Satan*. All the the "serious and cool" themes you could find in Bayformers were done in G1 years before and done better, way better. What makes G1 so perfect though is that aside from the actually amazing writing, it is still a complete mess of absurdity and silliness. Shit happens completely inexplicably, while also somehow making perfect sense. When you watch the show you stop going "why the fuck are they somehow talking to King Arthur" and instead start going "oh, shit. Another time travel episode? Cool". The character arcs are these insane but absolutely legendary materpieces. Megatron is such a defined and well represented character that you never doubt him. He can live up to any of his promises, he truly feels like the character we're told he is. When he becomes Galavatron, he somehow becomes a completely different character while remaining the same. He doubles his power at the cost of losing his mind. He's no longer a careful plotter, but now someone so deadly they can afford to simply fight at their whim. Same character, same motive, but a completely different personality. That dichotomy of actually well written story and absurdity makes the show glorious. For me, it's the concept of Transformers represented perfectly.
Yeah that was me too, I don’t care what anybody says, the original three transformer films were dope to my little self and I could 100% rewatch them and still enjoy them
Nah I already give all 5 of 'em a chance. Transformers 1 & 2 is super great imo because I literally rewatched them 3 to 4 times. 3 is pretty OK-ish (the battle scenes are the only reason I watched the movie lol.) 4 & 5 are downright mehhhhhh...... (I watched them once & never rewatching them since then)
I still think "Transformers: Dark of the Moon" is the best film in the franchise. It had fewer dumb jokes, a good plot, and a great villain performance by Leonard Nimoy.
You're trippinn. DOTM is garbage. Who did they think they were fooling with the fake-out deaths?? Ofc they weren't going to kill off all the Autobots...
@@barkley8285 “not for you” isn’t the best excuse for bad written. Its a valid concern but if you literally have to have no sense of retention and be more naive to not hate the movie, it’s probably not the best movie. Maybe an okay movie, but definitely not one with “good” plot. Tons of movies aimed at children have had amazing writing and plots for anyone (megamind; kung fu panda (like any of them); shrek; the incredibles (still better than the more “adult” fantastic four movies). Saying something is for kids or adults has no basis on whether its actually “well written”. If all kids movie wants to do is sell to kids then it can be successful doing just that, but if you can’t at least watch it from a perspective of someone slightly more intelligent (kids aren’t that stupid) then doesn’t have a “good plot”.
@@Utonian21 obviously they weren’t going to kill them all, but the space shuttle explosion shows us what happens when the Autobots aren’t there to protect humans: Chicago gets fuckin nuked by Decepticons and all the humans get murdered. This addresses the point that comes up quite a bit in these movies “do we still need the Autobots on earth?” and the answer is yes. Too bad the government is too dumb to understand that in AOE and TLK
@@Devo57 Exactly, the Autobots had already saved the world twice at that point, but yet they're still getting treated like the bad guys while the government trusts and makes a deal with the actual bad guys, leading to what happens to Chicago... It just pisses me off because it was almost completely avoidable. There's so much unnecessary death in the Bay films, the total death toll is in the 10s of thousands by the final film. I get it, if earth got caught in the middle of a war between giant alien robots, some mofos getting bodied would be an unfortunate reality. But like I said, so much of the death in those movies was avoidable
I would say I'm mixed towards the franchise I loved the first one, and still do (I was 7 at the time, and it got me into Transformers. Which I, ultimately, think was it's greatest achievement) Thought the 2nd one was okay, liked the 3rd. I thought Age of Extinction started *really* strong, but got shitty after the first act. And The Last Knight was awful. Bumblebee was great!
Wow that's quite literally my exact situation. I was 7 when the first one came out, big fan of the original trilogy. I agree that the first act of the 4th one was awesome, but after optimus gets his new truck mode it all started going downhill. The 5th one left me feeling empty on the inside
I can not imagine bothering to see 5 after 4. I did a marathon when I was sick this year, starting with Bumblebee, then rewatching the Sam trilogy and while Bumblebee was definitely a solid film, and I found some new appreciation for Dark of the Moon, I wish I stopped there. Age of Extinction was such a dull, dragged out clusterfuck that I actually wish I had never seen or at least stopped halfway in. I think that's the only movie I felt this way about and I'm pretty sure it wasn't because of covid. It's amazing that the next one could be somehow worse.
18:26 This movie is a perfect example of the difference between good/bad movies, and fun/boring movies. Transformers is FAR from perfect, and yet I still enjoy these movies. The biggest reason I can see for that, is simply that the people making these movies wanted to make a fun and exciting movie. There is energy and LIFE here that I just don't see in most current slop we get served on the big screen. Someone cared, and because of that I care.
I just feel like the whole human mistrusting Autobot situation is just so dumb, and they actually sent out their only line of defense against the Decepticons. Like how stupid can you get? Also Optimus straight up commits War Crimes and everyone's ok.
The difference between the 1986 movie and the 2007 movie is that the 1986 movie requires and expects you to have the context of the first two seasons of The Transformers, while the 2007 movie has to explain itself and its context while advancing the plot in a fluid and natural manner, meaning it takes less time to advance the plot, and more time to explain what happened before, and they did try to do so by having Prime explain stuff to Sam, and having Sector Seven explain how they got the Allspark and Megatron, and how the pair got to Earth.
I think what’s really odd about the designs really only shows itself when you compare the Autobots and decepticons. The Autobots look like humanoid robots with quite calming faces, but then the decepticons have these monstrous expressions n features. Which then reminds me: these factions are of the same species, so why does one look friendly and the other an abomination
I kinda get it from a a marketing perspective. Maybe should have started to share the looks around a bit. But you know most of the faces starting getting weird.
The Decepticons go out of their way to look evil and terrifying to lord over the "insects" and flex their power. But ultimately the explanation is: they're evil and so they look evil. And god damn I'm glad they do!
They had to distinguish the two as the vfx of these characters were difficult and complex , optimus red flames design was not very visible due to the external light, if they hadn't differentiated them , it would have been just two factions of aliens being blobs just ramming fists onto each other and the franchise closing with 1 movie
“Why does one look friendly and the other an abomination?” To me, the reason is Autobots fighting for what’s right while the Decepticons have “fallen from grace”, in a way.
Yeah I actually like the first one... definitely a part of my childhood... I can see the flaws but I believe it has the least bayisms that people grew to hate. I actually think that because the second one was critically panned it made it cool to hate on the franchise and by extension this film. However viewed in isolation it's a pretty good film as far as blockbusters go.
I was 'older' when the toons came out (arrested development, what can I say) BUT I wasn't the only one. My buds and I saw TF2007 and were suitably impressed. It hit enough of the right notes to wow us (Peter Cullin's opening narration; that fight with Skorpenock in the desert; The 'Autobots Arrival' with the Steve Jablonsky score--and of course those smooth 'transformations' that made me think "Wow, now we really CAN make a Macross Movie!"). Sadly the ones to follow more 'splosions and less coherent story line, though Dark of the Moon HAD it's moments, too.
@@nickmitsialis Spot on. Though I didn't know it at the time but the voice acting and the score in the first film was amazing. As for the transformations ... I actually believe the first film has the best looking designs and the most realistic looking transformations... especially the first transformation as well as Prime's first transformation.
Energon had the potential to be awesome but the execution was abysmal. I still rewatch it from time to time though because it was the first Transformers series I saw.
@@flacsa636 You should rewatch it with the Japanese dub. It actually improves the quality somehow, and Kicker has more character. Energon makes more sense when you watch it through the lense of anime expectations.
Personally my first introduction to Transformers was the Armada, Energon, and Cybertron cartoons, which all took themselves a fair bit more seriously than the 80s Transformers, so when I saw the movie it just felt dumb live-action version of the 2000s cartoons. Also I'm surprised to hear that Optimus's original live-action design was so disliked. Personally I thought it was awesome.
Idc what anyone says, the three transformers movies were so important to me as a kid and I loved them dearly. I feel like if I watched them now I’d still adore them. So much nostalgia and a word charm to these movies.
As someone who has recently watched these movies out of curiosity, I was almost shocked by how well some of their aspects hold up. Sure, they're narratively empty, they have nothing interesting to say about politics or human relationships, they're pandering, they're long, they're noisy, they get worse with each installment, I don't plan on watching them again... But the special effects of the first trilogy are incredible and put a lot of modern blockbusters to shame, they have some good ideas and pay good attention to small details - at least for the first one. Oddly enough, my favorite scenes are the ones where humans are trying to fight and/or avoid Decepticons, and you can just feel how huge and threatening they are to normal people. They're not great movies, but they're solid "guilty pleasure" material.

10:16 here’s the difference between a good film and a bad film. I absolutely still remember that his name is Sam Witwiki, and I haven’t even seen the movie in like ten years.
One thing I will always say about these movies, I think the plot for the first three had absolute great potential if it was really handled with care. *Transformers (2007):* aliens arrive on Earth looking for mcguffin 1 and 2, one side wants to use its power to restore their planet and put themselves as the dominant force at the cost of humanity. The other side isnt willing to sacrifice humanity for their world, especially if a dictator gets power. *Revenge of the Fallen:* the Allspark wasn’t the only way to get, there was an ancient super weapon that could drain stars for energy. Even if it’s simple, I loved that idea and really wanted to know more about the star harvesters, Cybertronian culture and even their biology. Thankfully, the comics exists. Though, I wish it was more of the focus of the movies. *Dark of the Moon:* the Decepticons were kind of winning all along. Their victory was imminent to the point that the former Autobot leader compromised and was willing to do *whatever* it takes to bring back their world. There was also a big turn in characters, and while most don’t like it, I appreciate it. Optimus goes off the deep end, which I think is partially for humanity’s sake and also a sign that his mental was really starting to deteriorate. Megatron offered peace, granted he was probably going to shoot him in the back or something. There might have been an evil plot behind it. Or maybe he was genuine, cause he makes it very clear he just wants to go back to Cybertron. Either way, I like and appreciate it. Bayverse isn’t the best, but like with every Transformer media in the west, I can see the good and the bad and appreciate it all. Except Transformers Energon, I think that’s where Geewuners need to direct their hate lol
AOE did address some of the criticisms i had with the bayformers; 1. Marky mark's Cade was more likeable (imo) than Shia's Sam (plus no more of his awfully unfunny parents), 2. The bots were color coated and smoother meaning they were easier to see what they were doing during the action, compared to say for example; jetfire optimus vs the fallen who's a giant blob of a mess, where's his head, wait is that his arm? hard to tell. 3. Optimus has a reason to be angry (out of character or not people didn't mind his 'freedom is a right to all sentient beings' while also saying 'piece of tin', 'any last words?' or my favorite 'give me your face!') He has an arc meaning he's not the same from the start as he is till the end. can you seriously tell me he had any sort of change in the first movie, or second or third? at least in AOE it ended with his faith in humanity renewed if you want to say he was getting darker at the end of DOTM. 4. Lockdown kept his evil presence through the whole film which is more than I can say for megatron who was frozen though most of the first movie, an underling to the fallen and then a hobo in the third and even as galvatron he's overlooked. and on the side i dug the dinobots. With all that said it's easily my favorite compared to the awful sequels like ROTF and DOTM. I refuse to watch the last knight.
I wish that they'd made more decepticons with non militaristic alt-modes. In IDW's All Hail Megatron comics they were a bit creative with it. For example, Astrotrain uses his alt-mode to go into the subway tunnels and kill the people hiding out in the stations. At first when he's approaching, the people think its a subway that's coming to rescue them but nope. Tbh those comics felt more like a disaster movie type story than Transformers 2007. Humanity's situation felt genuinely hopeless and it was kinda dark. I thought they were pretty good and I'd recommend them.
decepticons having militaristic alt-modes makes sense though. Of course they'd pick the vehicles with heavy weaponry where the autobots are content with disguising as normal cars. That being said they probably would've done more non military modes if they didn't use such a small cast
@chinsaw2727 There are Autobot police, but the majority aren't police. Which is why most of them aren't particularly warriors, and just a rag tag crew of different hobbies.
Bay's Transformers introduced me to Linkin Park, technically kickstarting my teenage years... nto sure if I should be thankful for that or not, but... impact is definitely something these flicks had. Also, 13-year-old me enjoyed movie 2, fight me.
Well yeah it was dumb fun my family says it's best but they're causel fans and don't know better and the forst battle and optimus getting a jetpack are the best parts of the movie
I remember walking into a tv store and seeing the opening seen where soldiers were fighting the blackhawk. It is still such a badass scene and this video really captures my nostalgia. Wonderful work Cody!
I’m not going to lie..I grew up watching this movie when it came on tv every now and again. And it was one of my favorite movies. And good god did that ending section hit like a truck because that’s exactly how I feel.
I remember wanting a Cybertron based movie when the 3rd came out (and because of WaC and FoC games) and I'm honestly glad Bay never did it. The first one was pretty fun and shame that they got worse (with the occasional cool scene or moment)
I find Transformers 07 to be a guilty pleasure of sorts, where I love the ideas but the execution is, um, middling at best. I liked how they tried to build up the Transformers even in some of the earliest trailers (I even read the Ghosts of Yesterday novel beforehand and it was a legit good read). I liked how genuinely dangerous and intelligent they tried to make the Decepticons. I liked some of the different angles they went with to differentiate itself from prior versions (Beast Wars and the Japanese anime shows of the 2000s were my bread and butter). But wonky writing, questionable design choices that clashed with the ones that made sense, the inconsistent lore that made less and less sense, it just fell apart at the seams. Oh lord I wish Bayformers had balanced itself better. PS. Unpopular opinion, I actually liked the red hot rod flames on Optimus Prime.
After the munky, flaming hot trukk was no big deal. It bugged me more that he wasn't a cab-over-engine design... which also wasn't a big deal, because how often do you see those on American roads anymore? (For those without regular access to American roads, they're pretty rare.)
@@boobah5643 Heck I first grew up with Optimus being a fire engine in the Robots in Disguise anime and again in the Cybertron anime later on, and in between both of those he alternated to a beefy sci-fi semi-truck in Armada and Energon. So I’m perfectly fine with Optimus being whatever variation of the two so long as he still looks right. Same goes for Megatron who has been in way more alternate forms (my personal preference being a tank). Problem is both of their actual character models (and their writing) has been dreadful.
The worst thing to come of this series of films is that they made Optimus Prime in to a pessimistic killer versus most other incarnations making him more reluctant to immediately jump to killing and tended to be optimistic about things. The last thing you'd expect Optimus Prime to shout is "Kill" like a deranged soldier.
_"With the All Spark gone, we cannot return to our home planet. And fate has yielded its reward: A new world called home. We are living among its people now, hiding from plain sight, but watching over them in secret, waiting, protecting. I have witnessed their capacity for courage, and though we are worlds apart, like us, there's more than meets the eye. I am Optimus Prime, and I send this message to my surviving Autobot taking refuge among the stars. We are here. We are waiting."_
14:58 I had an idea where the Decepticons had color shifting technology to simultaneously change colors so they can disguise themselves better as legit looking military vehicles and then ditching the bland colors to their more iconic ones when they no longer need it because they're invading the world now or some shit that way we can get best of both worlds while the Autobots had no problem changing colors because they use civilian vehicles and as long as it's not as outlandinsh they can blend pretty easily.
And it's really not that far fetched many Transformers in the past has some crazy abilities like turn invisible, mass shifting which allows certain Transformers to transform in extremely impossible sizes and transform into a different looking transformer so changing colors is really not that hard for them to do
Very fair view of the movie, giving it a lot more credit than others did/do. And, yeah, he's right to do so. Because this is a pretty solid popcorn flick. It's not what the movies would later devolve into when they realized after TF2 that they didn't have to try, but at the same time it's definitely not high art (which, come on, it's Transformers, of course it's not going to be high art). It's a perfectly serviceable film from 2007, 'nuff said. (Although I can't help but notice at 13:30 it's not the actual 1986 poster but one of the homages, which I actually assume is intentional ;P ).
Now I really want to see Cody's take on My Little Pony. Would probably be the most insightful take on both the franchise and the fandom that we'll ever see.
Back when this movie came out, i absolutely loved every second of it. I was 11 at the time and very casually watch transformers at that point (the oldest series i had watched was Beast Wars by that point) but thought this was the coolest movie ever and fully cemented my love for the franchise.
transformers was probably the biggest constant in my childhood to early adulthood. from collecting so many different toys to making stop motion videos.. love it
Honestly something the first film did well compared to the rest was showing the impact that the transformers had on the environment, and accurately showing how most would react to one of them. The first 3 minutes shows the transformer invade and proceed to destroy the army base, the scene in the desert where they fight against the scorpion, and the end fight where they all fight in the city. And the destruction, oh boy was that great. They are giant, inhumanely massive robots that can easily destroy our properties, and the first film showed that very well.
Tbh, the designs are still my favorite part of the Bay movies. I genuinely love the more organic/alien appearances of them, especially the Decepticons. They don’t beat the classic or the Transformers Prime designs, but I still like them a lot.
This summed up TF 2007 perfectly. It was my introduction to this franchise as well, so for this film (and this film alone), the nostalgia is still strong, even though there's way better TF content out there.
I really loved the first movie, and I grew up with Beast Wars so it wasn't my first experience in the franchise. The practical effects and CGI were absolutely captivating and the scene where Blackout destroys the military base is probably my favorite part in the entire franchise because of how memorable it was and how cool the character looks. The immature tone of the films can be obnoxious and groan worthy, but I sometimes wonder if they wouldn't have been nearly as memorable, for better or worse. I watched the first three films and Bumblebee so I kind of mercifully missed the really bad ones.
My first ever Transformers interaction was Transformers Prime. And the lore there was actually interesting. And a great origin story Megatronus and Orion Pax were best friends. Megatronus being a gladiator and took interest in politics. Since there was some inequality going on with rich and poor there were slaves. Orion Pax was a young wise bot. He wanted to learn a lot about cybertrons history. Megatronus became his mentor and shortly after wanted to shorten his name. Orion Pax was interested with the ideas and opinions of Megatronus. Megatronus wanting to become a prime so he can lead his followers to freedom. But the Primes denied it since Megatronus his ideas seem to be very agressive. He wanted to overthrow the old guard with force. Orion agreed with the council that he did not believe in violence in the means of achieving justice. And gave a speech. The hearts were so overwhelmed by the words of Orion Pax that finally for the first time in the golden age of cybertron stood someone worth of becoming a Prime. Megatronus was furious his disciple was chosen over him. And swore he would claim the matrix of leadership for himself and started a revolution with his loyal following which he named Decepticons. Soon war would break out. In some dark energon experiments the planet cybertron got infected with dark energon. The blood of unicron. Opposite to the blood of Primus that was the core of cybertron itself. Primus had to shut down to remove the poison making the planet uninhabitable, this is what Orion Pax found out when he tried to reverse the effects of dark energon on the planet core. When Orion Pax stood before Primus he was chosen to keep and guard the matrix of leadership from Megatron. When Orion Pax recieved the Matrix he came to be: Optimus, the last of the Primes.
Fuck yeah, man. When that movie came to Chicago to film, literally everyone here was talking about it and when opening night came around, theatres all around the city and suburbs cheered when the bad guy’s helicopter arrives in the city.

As someone whose first introduction to Transformers was this movie, and who moved on to watch multiple of the animated shows and even read a few of the comics, I have to say that while a lot of this film is hard to watch nowadays (legit, I tried watching it drunk on my birthday and I barely got past the 1-hour mark before quitting), I’ve always enjoyed the action scenes and the attempt at setting the admittedly childish premise in a more realistic setting. The designs aren’t the prettiest, but I’ve always loved that they actually looked like their bodies could transform into actual vehicles, and even now, watching clips of the action/chase scenes, I’m impressed by their quality.

Honestly I loved the designs for Optimus and Bumblebee, I see why long time fans were upset but 8 year old me was so hype seeing Optimus with flames. The designs were probably one of the only redeemable aspects in my opinion
Fuck that g1 designs aren't as bad ass at least them made people actually want to drive the cars they turned into
We also gotta think about time periods.

Dark of the Moon will always stand as my favorite of the Bayformers movies. Mostly because Michael Bay was given the entire city of Chicago to use as a giant sandbox.
Lol, poor Chicago
Same and also that he shot that film in 3D, so he needed to slow down on his style wish resulted in some beautiful longer shots.
I’d probably be dead in that universe
Eh, for Chicago that’s a holiday.

Good video.

And then they make him in transformers 5 BEG for his allies to be freed from jail
From all thing they had done, wizards and this particular scene is the worst of all

I mean pre war most autobots were civilians/scientists. Not sure about in bays version tho.
It was the same in G1 too, for the most part at least. Optimus Prime was surrounded by VW beetles, ambulances, and police cars while Megatron himself was a gun surrounded by fighter jets

NGL, I think Transformers Prime took almost a perfect approach to the Decepticon Aesthetic that the movie sequels completely dropped the ball on.
The grey Cons hid their colors as their interiors (Starscream and Soundwave come to mind), Megatron’s polished iron felt intentionally minimalist as a pragmatic former-gladiator, the foot soldiers were stealthy black SUVs, Knockout’s bright red was integrated into his personality
They felt militaristic and intentional without losing their distinct colors and silhouettes

Now go crazy and make us some money!”
I might be stretching this, but just saying my opinion🤷♂️
It happens all the time. Look at Batman Returns (I like that movie, but it's obvious Tim Burton went crazy), or look at Wonder Woman 1984...
it also doesn't help that by the 2nd movie there were writer's strikes so it made the script extra bad and by the 4th and 5th movies Bay didn't want to be a part of it at all but finally caved after enough pushing from the studio
That's exactly what happened, this is why Bay should never have full creative control over ANYTHING!
The practical sets and effects give this moving a charm that most modern blockbusters lack

Let's face it, Meagan Fox was simply slotted into the story to encourage those Lads (and Lesbians with good taste) who either weren't TF fans, old enough to remember the originals, or simply sat firmly on the fence, into going to the cinema/buying the home media.
"Meh, it's robots beating the shit out of each other... But it's got Fox dressed in skintight jeans and crop-top bent double under the hood of a car... OK, I'm in."
Well that explains what happened after the first. I felt the first did a better job at world building and going quite all crazy as the later ones would be
The only good thing about transformers after Spielberg left is the CGI. Like holy shit the graphics matches that of a modern movie.
Even the worst of the MCU is still a masterpiece compared to Michael Bay’s Robot fan fiction, fetish films.
Underrated take
I also like to think of it as the decepticons intentionally favoring more inhuman monstrous faces, much like how many cultures would use shields/masks with faces molded into them
You think nostalgia is your ally? You merely adopted Transformers. I was born in the Michael Bay Transformers, molded by them. I didn't see the 80s cartoons until I was already a man, by then it was nothing to me but a baby show!

Grew up with both and I like both. First Bayformers is still a solid film as an adult, and while G1 isn’t always the best in retrospect, I love the characters and world that was created as well as some of the unintentionally funny/corny moments.
There’s so much that could be done with this franchise and I wish that it received more love and better care.
I see what you did there
The G1 Transformers show is kind of messy at times but it's not that childish. I've watched more childish garbage than that, honestly.

Tons of movies aimed at children have had amazing writing and plots for anyone (megamind; kung fu panda (like any of them); shrek; the incredibles (still better than the more “adult” fantastic four movies).
@@Okbuddypal no shit
Bruh, Cody doesn't know about the Unicron trilogy, and he's older than I am.
Though in this case, it might be a blessing he never saw Energon.
Ah Energon, just like my first intimate partner: Fun at the time and kind of nostalgic, but abhorrently cringe and embarrassing in hindsight
I love how Cody just gives up on the plot summary halfway through and says Sam spent the rest of his life in Guantanamo
I totally agree. Each movie had some awesome new characters and interesting settings. I love the SR-71 autobot a lot from revenge of the fallen.

Bumblebee is not part of the Michael Bay continuity. It's a reboot
Michael bay didn't write bumble bee
michael bay didn't get the chance to make it a terrible film thats why
Transformers 2007 is 10/10.
As someone who grew up with Armada & Cybertron it came in perfect time and delivered more than I could ever ask for.
couldn't agree more.
Armada,Energon and Cybertron were my jams.

What about Age Of Extinction or The Last Knight?
@@BronyLord-wo1ym I really wasn't a fan of those two being honest, but I think that is my bias speaking really.
AOE did address some of the criticisms i had with the bayformers;
1. Marky mark's Cade was more likeable (imo) than Shia's Sam (plus no more of his awfully unfunny parents),
@@blackblack1167 it's not your bias speaking. Those movies are complete shit.
Energon is an utter travesty to say the least. It's such a painful mess that it makes the first three Bayformers movies look like masterpieces.
Plus the decepticons were mostly warriors, so it would be understandable that the alt-modes are military vehicles.
@chinsaw2727 There are Autobot police, but the majority aren't police. Which is why most of them aren't particularly warriors, and just a rag tag crew of different hobbies.
16:00 this whole red thing is true. It’s why Raimi’s spider man has such prominent spider webs. Because that breaks up the red
I also really like the red flames on Optimus
The flames are really cool, but if I had a reason to not like them, it’s because it doesn’t fit Prime’s personality
For me its pacific rim, which I think is a masterpiece in the same vein
The worst thing to come of this series of films is that they made Optimus Prime in to a pessimistic killer versus most other incarnations making him more reluctant to immediately jump to killing and tended to be optimistic about things.
The last thing you'd expect Optimus Prime to shout is "Kill" like a deranged soldier.
damn if Transformers just had an A24 logo at the start all of these sheeple would have seen it for the art it truly is.

17:46 that camera car looks fun to drive, but probably not fare well in a crash. Kudos to the drivers of these and to the stunt people.
And a great origin story
Megatronus and Orion Pax were best friends.
When Orion Pax recieved the Matrix he came to be:
Optimus, the last of the Primes.
Dark of the Moon imo was the best in the franchise - the battle for Chicago will always be awesome.

I’d legitimately take this film over whatever new movie the MCU pumps out.
Is it a childish premise? It seems like standard sci-fi fare to me
