The issue with this course and some others that makes getting certain tricks feel like luck is visual clarity. In this case, the lava wall to the left of spawn carries the "ridged" pattern all the way to the top. Despite that, excluding the bottom, none of the cut-outs have any function, making it easy to dismiss the bottom cut-out as an actual important part of the course. Even cFive who figured it out claimed it was "luck" because if the piece hadn't fallen out when it did, he likely wouldn't have kept trying the tree, which is what happened to vyQ. I think filling the cut-outs going up would've been a good way to indicate that the space in the both left is unique and requires additional attention to solve the course. Using a different material in areas where you need to plant the tree could make for a good hint as well. I know that these would make the course easier, but the goal of these courses are to eventually be solved by discovering cool tricks each character can do. Not to mention, it's a lot more fun watching vyQ and cFive figure out the courses instead of getting frustrated and giving up.
I completely agree that being able to show off a course is more enjoyable than watching them give up. I think changing the material does make it too easy, because it's also a puzzle meant to make you think and try different things before coming to the right answer, which is the part that makes it fun to play. But better visual clarity by removing the upper cutouts to guide the player would be ideal, especially since that trick isnt guaranteed to work the first time.
Yeah, visual clarity & visual hints is like the biggest thing about these courses imo, when making a puzzle, every piece should have a distinct & meaningful reason for being there, & unnecessary details like the ridge take away from that.
To me the ridges seem very intentionally meant to obscure the solution. So I kinda understand the design decision for such a short course but it was probably too much when the trick was something as unexpected as a wall clip
The visual clue, I would argue, is watching how the wood spawns from a cut tree. C5 noticed and, combined with his thorough knowledge of game mechanics in all their jankyness, tried to go through lava. He deserves his time, and I think he figured it out faster than 99.5% of people that watch these videos could. The luck comes from just how vast said game mechanics are. I liked this course! Not top 5, but certainly above average.
That’s the intended solution. Good work. Sorry Vyq. For the record, I do provide necessary info in the stage submission, such as “Note: Pink wool on my stages means at least one of the edges sets up the spacing for something.” Please be sure to share this info with Vyq, too. Lol EDIT (3 hours later): I've learned some lessons from this. Apologies to Vyq for the RNG solution at the end (the tree will not always spawn a log). I understand why it’s upsetting, since you did try the tree once. I'll avoid lesser-known RNG in the future. The extra cutouts above the starting area also obscured the significance of the cutout at the starting area, which was not appropriate for me to do when RNG is involved. I will also include the stage notes in the Rules section instead of in the Notes section underneath when I submit a stage to help it stand out more. However, it would be best for me to have better visual indicators in the stage itself as well. I'll do better for future stages. Sorry to cause frustration instead of fun. :(
It was a cool map dude (how did you discover that glitch in the first place?) If you want to remove that element from the map, I wonder if you could instead make hitting the lever the result of a smash throw left with the wood piece after bouncing off the first lever with side B?
Thanks :) The wood piece going through lava isn’t technically a glitch, but it’s an oversight exploiting intended functions. I discovered it while debunking Zapdos777’s DLC Only stage, which can be found on my channel. That’s also the stage where I discovered Greninja’s shadow climb glitch, Peach’s self-counter on bob-omb to hit through thick walls, and other tech. Come to think of it, I’ve discovered a lot of cool stuff that is spread out throughout my videos. Would anyone be interested in a video series where I showcase platforming techniques and stage-building tricks for each character? I’m not sure that’s been done yet.
Nah man Canadian Bacon, is this really how it's supposed to be solved ?! This is janky at best, you have to make them believe it's a skill issue OR that it requires a shield break, THAT's how you make a good course !
I think the issue is they never show the "intended" solution, they should ask it at least. I like these videos much better when they can compare what they did with the intended way and see if they cheesed it or not (Imma say this time cfive did)
I agree with you. The RNG ending is not fair. To make up for this, I stated in the stage submission that the edge of pink wool sets up the spacing for something and provided two additional hints as well. However, I don’t think this was noticed, unfortunately. I’d rather the hints I provide be looked at instead of seeing someone give up in frustration. I feel bad, so no more RNG solutions.
I think the actual solution to the ending is that you're meant to pick up a wood piece yourself before doing the trick, side b into the tree to bounce off it as you guys did, then smash throw the wood into the lever and immediately side b to bounce on the top lever
Very cool track and great video as well!! The difficult part at the end was a bit junky, but it seemed so clear that you had to throw something from the lower portal to the upper portal in order to activate the trigger... Maybe the place where you plant the tree should have been more "special" so the player can guess you have to do something with that spot... Great course nevertheless, the moving tree part was a banger!
You’re right. I should’ve included a visual indicator that the corner was special. In my stage submission, I said that the edge of pink wool sets up the spacing for something, but I don’t think this was seen. It’s probably better to put indicators in the stage itself, and I will avoid RNG tricks in the future. I feel bad seeing Vyq give up in frustration, especially since he tried the correct solution.
@8CanadianBacon9 I understand that watching Vyq giving up is kind of disappointing, but man the rest of the course was so cool! Keep it up with your work on stage builder puzzle courses!
I don’t know how it’s supposed to be solved, but I think the way they did it wasn’t intended since by doing it that way there are 2 portals that just don’t do anything.
Either way they always have to show or at least read the intended solution, it's my favorite part of the videos, when they figure out if they cheesed it or not
I tried the stage out before watching the video. I did it a little differently. Instead of planting the tree to the left of where you start like seen here, I planted the tree to the right of the teleporter that you have to go through with the rocket. I then cut the tree down towards the teleporter, and when the wood released, it went through the teleporter and hit one of the switches on in the box on the far left. Other than that, it my experience with this maze was basically the same, didn't time myself but I think it might have been around the same time seen in this video.
@@8CanadianBacon9 You're welcome! This stage was very fun an creative to play through, I never would have thought about having the tree go through the lava wall myself if I made something like this.
It was the intended solution. I really wanted to use that tech in a puzzle without making it obvious, but I regret it now because it caused frustration in a bad way, and someone didn't have fun :( I've learned my lesson.
