Just WOW. I'm Cantonese living and born in the US and you speak Cantonese waaay better than me! So much respect. I actually took 4 years of Spanish in school and still can't speak that fluently. No one to practice with. I will check out your Spanish lessons :)
Respect! I like the part where you mention you started to thinking stuffs in Cantonese language, that's something! You're not just speaking in Canto, but as well as thinking, I think that's awesome, and that's not easy. =D
Lucas this just popped up on my RUclips...what a change you've made. Still just as Nice now..and Nice always matters. You've always been a teacher at ❤️...now you are teaching the world on your channel about justice and doing what's right...
Hello, I am really amazed by your Cantonese level. You are speaking almost like a native!! I lived in Germany for 7 months but my German is still..... (Lol) i m from Hong Kong and an online Cantonese tutor. Now I want to make some Cantonese learning material for foreign learners like you. I would like to hear some learning experience from the perspective of a non-Chinese speaking person. Please let me know if you are interested in the collaboration. Thank you and add oil!!
Your cantonese is better than most people, given that you're a foreigner who's learning a new language..! You absolutely smashed this language dude! Good on ya! Keep it up and you'll go far with your prowess in language!
If you want to be on the more serious side of learning Cantonese through films; I would strongly recommend that you watch ANY of the movies or filmworks directed or produced by Wai Ka-Fai (韋家輝). Ask ANYBODY who has lived in Hong Kong for at least 20+ years, and they will certainly know who Wai Ka-Fai is. I would compare him to very famous American directors like Oliver Stone or Sam Peckinpah; people who grew up in times of GREAT social distress, filled with all sorts of conflicts and turmoil... Things they have witnessed happen like WW2, Korean War, Vietnam War, ect. 死人, 冧樓, 撞機, 沉船, 炒車... Just lots and lots of people in trouble or dying everywhere! With exposure to all kinds of '蘇州屎' (Suzhou Shit) like that, it would surely have heavily influenced the themes in their movies and films. There is an old TVB drama called '義不容情 Looking Back in Anger (1989)'. It is very old, but it's still VERY POPULAR and many Cantonese-speaking people know about it. It's one of the most watched TVB series by Chinese people in Hong Kong and around the world. It reflects upon the old pre-1997 culture and society of Hong Kong and its people; involving events, situations, social interactions, and pop-culture references that simply CANNOT be recreated in modern times today. You can learn quite a bit about authentic Hong Kong history and culture from that show. There are some very intense moments and bloody feuds/conflicts with the characters involved. Trust me, you will want to pull your hair out after you watch it! This is because of the vast amount of 社會見識 (social knowledge) that you will gain after watching it, and not just from learning Cantonese. Trust me, you will learn ALOT. I first saw it on VCD format like many years ago, from a friend who used to run a videostore in New York Chinatown. Back then, it was only available in Cantonese/Manadarin audio with traditional Chinese subtitles. I had ZERO knowledge of Chinese back then, but my friends FORCED me to watch it because they said it will help me learn more about Chinese culture. It took me a LONG TIME, like FOREVER to finally figure out what the hell they were saying, but I eventually figured it out after watching it over and over again like multiple times over the years. With 50 episodes, it was ALOT to take in and digest for a non-Cantonese speaker! And coming from an Italian-American who grew up in New York, I am quite proud to have watched it myself during my own lifetime. You can probably find the episodes here somewhere on RUclips, so be sure to check it out!
+Dell Tung He said he's been living in HK for four years... And he started to speak after 6 months. That does not mean that he spoke like this back then. It is obvious that after 4 years he became much more fluent compared to his first six months...
Well done. I think learning Cantonese is a lifelong exercise. I am not fluent but can speak it at a conversational level. There are always new words that are added that make it more difficult.😀
Wow! I'm blown away at how well you spoke in your video - you're cantonese is very clear and concise - I've been learning cantonese on/off for 2 years and my pronuciation is still no way as good as yours. What books did you say you used to study cantonese? and what were your routine - did you spends hours daily at it? I need to do what you're doing LOL. Maybe you can make a video on how you go about tackling cantonese, share some more of your tips!!
I love that in Canto - the following words when translated are homophones with the exception of the tones: Window, Gun, Wall, Sing, Exchange, and Long.
發音好標準,而且有明顯港腔,聲調都掌握得極為準確,能夠將外語學到呢個地步,肯定極為用心啊。 It seems like you have some followers who can't read Chinese, so I'm going to write the comment in English as well. Your pronunciation is very standardised, with an obvious twist of Hong Kong accent. You have a very good grasp of the tones. I admire that you can learn a foreign language to such an extent, you must have made a great effort.
Wow Lucas! Kudos! I'm totally amazed that your Cantonese is Awesome! If I wasn't looking at the screen, I could literally swear you are a Chinese Person. LOL! Continue to do what you love. You have a Gift of Linguistics. 💜💜💜
I'm impressed!! I was born in the US. However, I speak fluent Cantonese...so I thought. I never realized "mon fa" meant culture. I laugh when I hear you speak Cantonese, but have a few English words as well. Here in the states, we call that Chinglish! LOL You have a new subscriber! :)
Wow,u can speak Cantonese just like a local people in HK,it's awesome, you learn so fast and not every one from other countries can speak Cantonese like the people in HK :))keep it up,加油
This is an awesome video! An old video but definitely motivated me to learn Cantonese. I have been living in Hong Kong for almost 2 and a half years but I have never got myself to learn Chinese seriously, because I always thought it was impossible for me to learn it fluently. Now, I'm sure that it's possible. Thank you again!
Hi Lucas,my name is Oscar, from Macau, and I am a Secondary school student.Your Cantonese was very well,I understand what you are saying and I was quite surprising when you said Cantonese while the other foreigners can't said this so clearly,my English was very poor so I don't know you can understand what I am saying or not.At last, just keep going, nice video!
+Wong Wai Lok Thank you! your English is almost flawless :) Thank you for your support! if there is something I can help you with, just let me know! :D
wow your cantonese is on point! I can speak manderine, but for some reason cantonese is so difficult for me. I've watched TVB drama series for years and years, from that I've learned to understand what they're saying, just when I try to repeat what they're saying, somehow the enunciation is always off...
