I think one of the reasons why Rob uses "She said" in so many of his songs is that it essentially doubles the ways you can relate to, or empathize with, the lyrics. You can focus on the singer/narrator, relating to how they feel about this person in their life and what it's like being with them. Or you can relate to the person he's telling you about and the challenges that person is facing. IE: He could be singing TO you or he could be singing ABOUT you, and the ambiguity lets you decide which interpretation you prefer. Telling the story soley from a first person perspective would mean only telling one side of the story, and hoping people can relate to that. But, by including a second character in his lyrics, he essentially doubles the number of possible meanings that a listener can pull from, letting them pick one that they have the deepest connection to.
Additionally, this follows the writting principle of "Show, don't tell." When people are introspective they often don't have to state their emotions by saying "I'm sad" or "I'm angry" because it would be redundant. They know because they're feeling it, not because they're stating it. Instead, during moments of introspection, they contemplate the things in their lives that are causing those emotions. A scared little boy doesn't tell himself "I'm scared that I'm going to lose my mother to cancer." Instead, he remembers that she made sure he remembered his raincoat, thinks about how she has trouble sleeping, and wonders who will help keep her from being lonely. Basically instead of directly "telling" you how he feels, he's showing you how he cares by opening up about which things he's choosing to remember about her in the moment.
The first album "yourself or someone like you " is one of the only albums I absolutely love every song on. It is so personal to me I feel every word of it he is so relatable. Rob on his own and with Matchbox deserve so much more recognition than they have gotten.
"She only sleeps when it's raining" then toward the end he says "but outside it stopped raining" like she woke up, she got better 🥰 This is one of my favorite MB20 songs!
Rob is just such a vibe he literally is a time machine for me is almost weird because he has a certain comfort and warmth to him that i have not felt with any other band.
People gave him and the band some flak because they mistook the lyrics as misogynistic or abusive, but he actually wrote it from the perspective of an innocent victim
The reason why Rob's voice is so soulful is because he writes the songs ... so he's singing from the heart. Hey, when you are done with watching all the Matchbox videos, you might want to check out Rob's solo efforts. He's done 3 solo CD's and I think there's a 4th one on the way. I'm hard pressed to pick any favorite songs since there are too many. Oh, but my favorite ballad from the band is called "If You're Gone." There's a video for that one as well. Luv these guys !!!!!
Hi, just found your channel, I love hearing other people's opinions about my favourite bands and songs. Matchbox 20 and counting crowd are two of my favourites. You probably get many requests to react but I'd like to put some suggestions to you. Counting crows, She don't want nobody near and Counting crowd Palisades park (I don't understand this song or it's video but I know it's great so I'd love to hear your interpretation and what you think - it's a long song by the way).. Matchbox 20 , if you're gone and Rob Thomas, Someday (I find this song uplifting and hopeful) keep up the good work bud, peace.
His voice and delivery are so unique. He just blows me away every time. You can feel the words he's saying. Another very unique voice is Robin Gibb of the Bee Gees. He has a beautiful haunting vulnerable sadness in his voice. You should react to one of the Bee Gees songs where Robin is singing lead instead of Barry. Any of these will work. For Whom The Bell Tolls. I Can't See Nobody. And The Sun Will Shine. I Started A Joke. Wedding Day. Kiss Of Life. Massachusetts. Juliet. Tokyo Nights. My World. When He's Gone. Bodyguard. Saved By The Bell. All are great songs. I love the song Rob Thomas does with Santana called, Smooth. I love everything he sings. Incredible artist.
I love Matchbox 20. One of my favorite bands of all time.Still listen to their music and Rob's solo stuff all the time. Although right now hearing the backstory for the song again hits different, because I just recently lost someone to cancer.
You would love Survivor with Jimi Jamison on vocals. Check out Desperate dreams, Didn't know it was love, I see you in everyone. Just a few of their many hits from the 80s and early 90s. Great reaction to Matchbox 20. R.I.P Jimi.
Not a bad song by this band. I’ve loved them since day one! I agree about the album the person spoke about below me. Yourself or someone like you is gold imo
Since no one mentioned this, Paul Simon is a legend in American music. He is one of the best songwriter/singers of the 20th century. He is half of the duo, Simon and Garfunkel. Check out their album, 'Parsley, Sage, Rosemary and Wine' and you'll know what he talking about. I never made that connection before, but thanks to Rob, I get it now.
Anton not sure if you've done this one yet, but "Push" is another great song that this album. Pretty please do that one man. I will jam out like crazy.
As i may have said before I would hear Matchbox Twenty or Rob Thomas on the radio when i was younger or a Teenager. I don't know if you know this but hes had a solo career lately, you should definately check out his solo material too if you want :)
I agree, I think Rob starting the song off with "She said" reads like a conversation, but I interpret it as a conversation with himself trying to make sense of the grief he feels in all of its stages : It's 3 a.m, I must be lonely (Shock and denial) She says it's all gonna end, and it might as well be my fault (Pain and guilt) And she screams, and her voice is straining. I can't help but be scared of it all sometimes and the rain's gonna wash away I believe this. (Anger and bargaining) Well, she believes that life is made up of all that you're used to and the clock on the wall has been stuck at 3 for days and days. (Depression) Outside, it's stopped raining. (The upward turn)

Loved Matchbook 20 since the beginning. Push is an awesome song.

The song that got me into MB20. Awesome band, plus Rob Thomas has great solo material
You really need to watch the vh1 version, that followed that clip of him explaining the meaning behind the song.

Rob Thomas & Carlos Santana's "Smooth" is still one of the sexiest songs ever. 😬 God, matchbox twenty was great to grow up with.
