One of the coolest companies in Germany in my opinion. Their focus on obtaining materials as local as possible and their repair service are some of the most important and modern approaches to follow. Thanks for this awesome report!
Huge respect to our German neighbours from Poland. This R&D and production processes are very well organised and the product is top shelf
Combined with a Rondo Gravelbike, from my neighbors in Poland, it's perfect.
That was great. It's excellent to see people making great quality products on a larger scale.
Super cool! Makes me feel good about supporting a company that's so focused on quality and locally sourced materials. I have the gravel pack panniers and love them.
Great video. Props to Laura for the unassuming but intuitive camera work that flows with the tour. Also nice overlapping of sound and image in editing to make it as seamless as a fabric weld. Informative document of an exemplary company. Sometimes I pick up my Gravel Packs just to marvel at how light yet rugged they are.
A few weeks ago I saw this video about a place in Africa that literally had a mountain of old clothes sent to them. Some were recycled and some was new stuff that didn't sell. Today, I saw the video where this bicycle bag company repairs stuff they've sold many years ago. It seems to make a lot more sense to make stuff that lasts and can be repaired than to make that African mountain bigger.
My ortieb bags are almost two decades old. I crashed with one bag. The company has repair kits to make the water tight again. Fantastic product that lasts!
I agree. And the main reason why wasteful processes can be feasible, is the huge wealth gap between places. This is the one reason why I think tariffs are ok, if we use the money to get other places in the world to our level. Then we can both be customers and producers at eye level, instead of leeching off each other.
@@woodywoodverchecker I would research tariffs a bit more before making that assertion. Then there's your idea of the US tariffs used to bring the other places to our level. I don't think a US tax will be used to aid other places in that manner. Besides, these Ortlieb bags are built in Germany and should not be targeted by US tariffs.
Back in the day quality items that were generally repairable were the norm rather than the exception. Once plastics and later synthetics began taking over and manufacturing mostly moved overseas things changed dramatically. It’s really unfortunate.
@@daniellarson3068 I wouldn't even call it an assertion, it's more like a gut feeling. Also, I am based in the EU. But we also have plenty of tariffs for products from all over the world. I just checked the taric database, and if I haven't made a mistake, the import duties for e.g. electric cars (edit: from China) are already 35,3%. You can never say where that exact bit of money goes, but some of it is going to other countries. It's also possible to negotiate tariffs with social development in mind. (e.g. improve wages to get lower tariffs). I'm not saying the way the US are approaching things right now is good, though.
This looks like such a well thought out company with quality top of the list. They really should think about making bags for motorcycles as well.
They did in the past but obviously the market was not attractive enough. You may find vintage bags 2nd hand, or consider the still available duffle style "Rack Pack".
Ortlieb is one of those rare companies, where you know the small premium you pay goes a long way. For a bag that lasts more than a decade, they are probably the cheapest option there is. Also what is the better half of two decades? One decade? :DD
That means longer than 25 years.
Thank you to those workers that have always made a perfect product
Have a pair of purple Ortlieb bags I have been using for 30 years. ❤
Thank you so much, Ortlieb is such a classic, it is great to see how this is done. Excellent content, thank you and keep going.
You scored big on this one, Fascinating stuff we appreciate you.
That was one of the coolest tours ever! Thanks for taking us along. My first ever Ortlieb product arrives today ironically.
Tak!
Ich hab meine Ortlieb Taschen 2001 gekauft und hab damit viele tolle Touren durch Europa und eine durch Süd-Ost Asien gemacht. Ich liebe sie! 🚴🏻🎄
love the vids, Path Less Pedaled, probably my favorite bike channel on RUclips!
I sometimes have trouble getting enough volume on your vids. The clarity is fine but more gain would be good!
Thanks!
After a few years of doing quite a few good, long travels, I am so glad to finally have picked up a set of classic rear roller bags. Been just using what I could afford and its helped me to be able to appreciate what I have now.
It was fascinating seeing the repair workshop and process. Great tour!
Fascinating! I really enjoyed learning more abt my favorite bag! Thank you and Happy New Year! 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
Loved this video particularly tracing the history of the bag! I hope you get to visit more factories like this.
So cool to see the repair!
After researching bike packing bags for amidst almost 3 months, my research IS FINISHED!!👍🏼👍🏼
That was awesome Russ! Thanks for bringing us along!
Thanks for sharing Russ. As a Canuck, I' m a big Arkel guy in efforts to support my local businesses BUT, I absolutely would rock some Ortlieb stuff, more so now than ever. What an amazing story.
This is so awesome! Hope to see you visiting more legacy European bike companies
Love this video, didn’t think I would but what a great job you did.
Very interesting. Thanks for taking us on the journey. I have Ortlieb panniers.
Well this answers the question, why I didn’t buy Ortlieb panniers in 1979? Most of the folks I’ve toured with have used Ortlieb bags for years, very happily. I also like that they can be repaired if necessary. Thank you for the tour! 🎉❤
Good to see the birthplace of my favorite bags, including the amazing Vario PS convertible bag that I use everyday! ❤
I love to see how things are developed and made, so this is one of my favorite Path Less Pedaled vids!!!
Funnily enough, as far as i know, my grandpa was the one to supply Ortlieb with his first welding machine. He had a small business refurbishing industrial sowing machines and steam irons.
Fantastic video! I love this type of content. There’s a lot more that goes into making these bags than I imagined and seeing this helps me justify the cost.
What a fun tour!
6:44 nice Limp B reference 👌🏻
Cool tour, I was an ortlieb hater because of one experience, but def gonna try them again. The person giving the tour was on point.
Great video. I have lots of their bags and they are excellent quality.
I buy Revelate when they have what I want, because they're an American made company, but having German ancestry, I'm definitely going to have to look into some Ortleib products. Looks like very good stuff. Thanks for the tour, Russ, and Ortleib!
I work in the manufacturing world it is very interesting to see how processes are alike and different from company to company. Its even better to see the process when it is a product that you love. I enjoy this video immensely. Thanks so much for sharing! Take care.
This is such a cool video!! Love learning about stuff like this.
My experience with Ortlieb Service when something is broken and I just want to repair that myself: Send an E-Mail with a photo and the specific product name or number to the customer service. You will receive the spare part with a nice message within a few days. Great! ❤❤❤
Big coupe for the channel Russ! And kudos to Ortleib. They certainly are number one.
Thanks. I rely on Ortlieb for commuting and camping. I like the video showing how they do aftercare and how much the materials are from Europe.
I'm such a nerd, I love this sort of stuff.
Thanks for this great tour, Russ!
Really nice walk-through! Fascinating to see how these products are made.
Ortlieb is second to none, the best of the best.
Wow very impressive thanks for the guided tour of the factory.. definitely worth considering if you need bike packing bags 😊 Pete 🚴🏻👍
I bought a couple of bright yellow Ortlieb Backrollers to replace some copies which had ripped and were not repairable.
Wow! Immensely strong. Secure. I have used them for shopping and touring in France and transporting heavy commercial engine and suspension components. Without a doubt I have missed them. No rips, no damaged stitches or hanging brackets. Incredible.
I would not consider any other bike carrying panniers.
That was an informative tour. Good work, both of you. I bought my first Ortlieb bag about 15 years ago, and am interested in what's still coming out of the pipeline.
Thanks Russ. Of all the bicycle related products I use Ortlieb has the highest recognition rate from the general public. People with life experience just love their technology and instantly recognise a useful, durable product.❤
The top rollers are legendary. I have a pair going strong after 13 years
“Old” Bernina? That sewing machine can still sew as good as the day it was made!
Thx Russ
Love my Ortlieb bags!
You should have done a review of the Raleigh ! its beautiful
Both the past and the far future. And yes I can see why they hold their in-house processes very close because of the costly advantages they have pioneered. I want a Ortlieb Vario.
I still use two backrollers i bought 2nd Hand 25 yrs ago. great company.
Awesome Russ! Liked Ortlieb before… Now recommitted
I have 3 Ortlieb bags and i love them. There biggest competitor here in Belgium is Vaude but there bags aren't made in europe even though they claim to be climate neutral. I love it when a bag is made close to where I live and if there is a problem Ortlieb has one of the best services. They will help you as good as possible
Very interesting, well done video. Thanks a lot, Russ!
My son travels for his work and flys a lot. He has used the same Ortlieb roller travel bag for 3 years now.
I WANNA SEE THE WELDER!! YES IM YELLING!! 😂😂
There aren’t many products I would recommend to anyone at all with no hemming and hawing. I don’t really evangelize for products because there’s just too many variables about how the person is going to use it and their personal tastes. I will recommend these bags without a second thought.
I love my Ortlieb bags, but I wasn't impressed with the warranty service in the US. We had a little cola spill in a backroller bag, and it dissolved the liner on the bottom. The bag was no longer waterproof. I called them, and they just acted like that was my fault, which it was. But no offer to repair. I have since thrown the bag away, keeping the hardware for replacement on the other 3 bags we own.
I would like to see a similar video about Gilles Berthoud, probably the opposite style of Ortlieb high tech operation.
Very interesting!
Great video .
Thanks for the video. I really enjoyed watching it. :)
It would be great to see a factory tour of the Carradice factory which includes Upso bags (made from recycled truck tarps)
Awesome insights!
Great stuff.

I don’t really evangelize for products because there’s just too many variables about how the person is going to use it and their personal tastes. I will recommend these bags without a second thought. Don’t change.
Great stuff
Such a good products.🎉
I have kislux replicas, and my favorite is LV. In addition to the beautiful design, it is easy to take and can hold a lot of things.
I use hooks. I despise the modern clamp on attachment hardware so common nowadays.
Really interesting!
I rock a 26L Vario daily and I personally love the concept. (And yes, I am experiencing fraying on the connector latches). Only thing that annoys me is that inside is not enough different pockets to organize daily stuff. Major problem with the one large flat pocket directly on the laptop compartment is that it is designed only for flat objects. As soon as you put in more rounded stuff it pushes into the laptop compartment. Some stuff I don’t want to just throw in the large general storage volume. What’s ends up happening is that I basically have a huge storage volume where I have to dig through stuff to find it (like a messy handbag). Yet still I love the bag and its capability.
Does the commuter insert fit? That would bring a few more small pockets.
BTW would you recommend the Vario in general? It's probably overkill for that purpose but a waterproof backpack might be handy to walk to the supermarket on a rainy day. I have pannier bags but not the thing from Ortlieb to carry them like a backpack.
@@jochenkraus7016 Yeah I think the commuter inserts fit, but I am not willing to pay another 45€ on top of a ≈170€ Rucksack / Pannier (price when new a few years back).
I personally think that the Vario is worth it if you actually use both carry functions witihn one day. If you use it just for one function dominantly and only on rare occasion the other, than it is better to keep the products you are already using. And it is really expensive. Because from my view the Vario is neither a perfect bike pannier nor a perfect rucksack. But it is really good at doing both.
@@jochenkraus7016 I have the latest Vario too as my everyday bike bag and it's pretty handy overall but I feel like definitely could use another iteration or two before it really hits the sweet spot. I think if you just wanted waterproof backpack you could probably do better and significantly cheaper. My main complaint is that it is not a particularly comfortable backpack. It's OK for biking somewhere and then swapping to a backpack for some quick errands/shopping - but I certainly wouldn't want to wear it while hiking or have to carry it on my back for an extended period (say more than a half hour). The little bumps on the back that they put it for airflow kinda hurt (and make the bag stick out a bit awkwardly) and the straps aren't as adjustable or comfortable as a normal day bag. Also as a $200+ bag it definitely should have a small mesh pouch on the unencumbered side of the bag where you could store a water bottle (there's plenty of room, despite what he said). As a pannier I really wish they had made it zipper up the side - as you saw in the video, even on the newest version the straps dangle out the bottom if you aren't really careful, and it would be awesome to be able to use that as a front pouch to carry stuff while it's a panier. Would be a great place to store a jacket or something.
The reason Germans are great at Ortlieb is the same reason they fail to laugh at your microwave joke.
So great!
Super Nice video
Ortlieb yes, but Arkel, too!
Hey Russ….thanks for the video.Long time Ortlieb user. Quick question: Was wondering if you had an opinion on the Handlebar Pack Plus 11 litre…was just looking at one at my LBS today having watched your review many times of the previous version. Would be using it for road touring so no gravel or off-road cycling. Thanks for any thoughts you may have.
Spannend
19:54 is that smoke safe to breathe?
Does Ortleib make wallets? If not, they should partner with Freitag to make some
I think they have smaller bags for papers as accesories for other bags e.g. the courier bags but I'm not aware of actual wallets.
Very good. Be aware if you are dumb enough to put tent poles in an Ortlieb bag without padding on the bottom of them, they will chafe through. Ask me how I know.😪
Two nits to pick: they are a tad heavy and they lack internal pockets unlike some competitors..
You didn't ask him how he says PANNIER :)
14:55 punch some buttons and pizza comes out elicted no laugh. Oh dear. Maybe you can't make such great products and have a sense of humour 😗
Most people would think that your kislux bags are authentic because most people don't notice the difference! My husband bought me a LV for my birthday for $5000 and my friend bought a knockoff for about $60 and it looks exactly the same? I seriously can't believe it! It's amazing how some of these bags look exactly like real authentic designer bags! Cheers
I don't know how they stay in business when their stuff lasts forever.
I read many years ago that longevity became a problem for Wacom. Sometimes there are new trends and innovations. E.g. bikepacking and a handlebar bag with electric contacts. That's very handy together with a bub dynamo and a charger for small devices like GPS and phone. But that's no longer available.
And maybe cyclist have more in common with handbag ladies and get bags in different sizes and colors, lol.
