LEGO Star Wars 75309 UCS REPUBLIC GUNSHIP Review! (2021)

- The winner of the LEGO Star Wars UCS Ideas vote is finally here. The Ultimate Collectors Series REPUBLIC GUNSHIP is a beauty. Everything else surrounding the set? Not so much. A palpably disappointing Minifigure selection (missing P2 Commander Cody and/or a Clone Pilot), Imperial logo on the box, designers who don't care about prequel fans, and more have stained the image of this otherwise spectacular build of the Republic Gunship. In my review of 75309 I explain why it's worth the full $350, what's wrong with the set, & my personal slant.

I don't have anything I want to say that I didn't in the video, so I'll just put some designer quotes here for you:
“We put in two minifigures for good measure, because people expect it - even though we keep saying with a model like this it’s really not about minifigures. We put in minifigures that are appropriate, but I personally feel they shouldn’t be super-rare collector’s items. It’s just not okay to put a super-rare minifigure into a super high price point, because not everybody can afford it, and those minifigures will be super-sought-after.”
“Let’s be honest, all most people remember from the movies is that there was a Clone Trooper with some yellow markings on the helmet piloting the vehicle.”
"You told us, ‘We want this, we want it to be reasonably big,’ and I hope that not everybody will now say, ‘No, I don’t like the minifigures,’ or ‘I’m not buying it because I don’t like that brick there.’ So yeah, I guess if you want to see more sets like this, go and buy it.”
"We were reminded that minifigures are always a bonus with UCS sets, and when someone asked if they were aware of Jedi Bob they put their thumbs up, but when asked if it was in the set a couple of the designers put their thumbs down." (description not quote)
"We leave no detail unturned, everything has to be perfect."
"Only the best is good enough."
LEGO: *asks us what minifigs we want*

I just got this set and built it without knowing all the designer controversy. My initial thoughts of the set were very much the same. The build is beautiful I love the way it turned out. The figures are almost a non factor when it comes to my enjoyment of the set, but that's probably because they aren't very enjoyable. Pretty bland overall but I agree with the designers when they don't want to put super rare figures behind a big price point. All-in-all the designers attitude towards the fans is egregious, but I don't think it's bad enough to not buy this incredible set if you wanted it.

@Andrew Jennings this set us 350 dollars. If you bought a TV or something of that price and it wasn't working as intended you'd throw a fit. Point is both are a product the customer is paying for regardless of what it is and a certain standard is expected when buying something so expensive
The funniest thing to me about them saying that they don’t want to put exclusive, sought after minifigures in an expensive set is that they just revealed the Hogwarts Moments D2C and it has not just one but three golden 20th anniversary Harry Potter minifigures (Dumbledore, Hagrid, and Mcgonagall).
Lego are a bunch of hypocrites
They said they didn’t want to do that for Star Wars sets
@@firesaint4569 they did it in the Mos Eisley Cantina with multiple fan-favourite characters who had never been made before. (Tbh I'm more annoyed that they did it there than at not having Cody in the gunship- I do agree that it's better to have characters more widely available)
@Ben Rogers they compare in the fact that they are exclusive and are extremely desirable figures. These figures are supposed to be something you collect and try to get all of so putting three of these extremely desirable figures in a 250$ set is exactly what LEGO said they didn’t want to do with the Republic Gunship and commander Cody. I think it’s fine that they put exclusive figures in an expensive set but it’s still hypocritical that they would do it for LEGO Harry Potter right after saying they didn’t want to do it for LEGO Star Wars.

It’s a shame that we prequel lovers are kind of black mailed to buy the gunship otherwise there will
be no prequel sets until the next decade. The built itself is beautiful (Krennic voice) but I think it is a slap in the face in terms of the minifigures. When you look at other themes like Harry Potter or the upcoming CMF Marvel series, everything is so well thought and created with care for the minifigures but as a star wars fan on legos point of view we are just a pack of unthankful, outrageous fans who should be down on our knees thanking lego for some unnecessary bonus of an inaccurate clone (which is yellow because as a diehard fan we don’t care if it’s a pilot or a commander with episode 3 torso) and a dirty mace windu. So should we buy this set? Should we as fans support this behavior? Just to get 2031 a 1000$ UCS Venator with Jar Jar Binks and Rose Tico? I am really uncertain….
Well, I think 10,000 dollars is a little extreme, but a UC's venator is definitely going to be expensive.

I agree that minifigs in UCS sets are extra. I buy UCS sets for model display, not for figures.. The issue I have with it is that LEGO asked us what figures we wanted and it appears they ignored it. If LEGO had released the results of what figures were most requested and if those two we got truly won, no issue! But somehow I doubt that’s the case.
Agreed. And it's also clearly something a lot of people want: good figures in a UCS set. Despite the model's being great they want good figs too, even if you don't personally care that's not a reason for LEGO not to deliver to those people. It doesn't hurt you. Ya know?

I adore the prequels. I love the gunship itself, and the lego model despite it having way too many studs, and I will happily buy this set when they fix the box art. I dont care about minifig selections very much anyway, though I really like the clone and Mace windu, I think Mace was a perfect choice, the clone would be much better if it were a pilot, but that's ok. I really do think minifigs are an extra item in a ucs set, but I understand and that there are many out there that disagree, and adore minifigs. That's totally fine. And its totally fine that the designers disagree, that's their view, and they make the sets, but I draw the line at their asinine comments. They've handled the release of this lego set worse that an infant hanlding a firearm. The comments reflect that they dont realize that the people dumping $350 on this set care *just as much* about the ship/what it represents, as the people who dump $350 on the Mos Eisley Cantina or $700 on a Star Destoyer. We love the prequels and want nothing more than to buy more ucs sets from them. But im not sure the designers/top dogs at lego empathize with that sentiment. and I hate that they will say that other prequels ucs sets arent coming if we dont like this. I really like the set, a lot. I just dont like the comments. Again, I dont care that this didnt come with Jedi Bob or Cody, although I would have really liked that. And the set didnt have to, it was never going to anyway. *They really dont have to listen to every plea and beg we give about every minute detail, because were gonna disagree on those, and that's fine*, like when people say 'this minifig should be this' while others think 'this minifig should have that'. However, they should listen to the general market wants of the people, like that many would love to buy more ucs prequel sets, diehard lego fan or casual. Just treat lego prequel fans as equally as lego OT fans. Recognize that people spending this much dough care. *Should every detail be catered to what the loudest fans request? No. Absolutely not.* Just understand the general wants of your market, and dont make comments like that towards them

@@duckysnake smart company.
@@anglishbookcraft1516 huh?
Busted out laughing when he said “ Things that don’t make sense, for 100, please, Mr. Trebek” 😂😂😂
Man it’s just a box
I got this set very recently and tbh the clone figure really excites me. I love the design and it’s color, and I agree the gunship is beautiful. This is one of the coolest UCS in my opinion. I now have the atat, star destroyer, a-wing, and now the LAAT
LEGO: we don’t put rare figures in sets because then not everyone can get them!
Fans: if LEGO puts p2 Cody in the gunship it will make him expensive so!
LEGO and fans forgetting that thrawn and Rex were both in $20-$25 sets and are now crazy expensive and not everyone can get them!
Imagine getting mad at Lego for a hole in the box and even teams that have nothing to do with it, it's obviously a problem that happened during shipping.
The figures could have been two accurate clone pilots or one accurate clone pilot and the clone commander we ultimately got. Then maybe have the crossover to episode III with some phase two clones or something like that.
Why I tell people I don’t buy the Gunship: because of what the designers said
Why I’m really not buying the Gunship: because I need to eat
I completely agree with your assessment of the set. I love it so much and I think it’s absolutely beautiful but it gets overshadowed by the controversies surrounding it. Its such a good set and it’s definitely worth the hefty price
About half of the maroon 1X3 sloped bricks in my UCS set were off-color from the rest. I had the same problem with my 2019 Slave I.
Your brick problem on the bubble turrets is a common thing for that type of piece, its something about the force of it moving up not swiftly like the normal hinges, but that's just what I think the problem is
I’m glad I don’t really care about mini figs and the Star Wars lore around the sets. I just love the way the lego Star Wars sets look
Love this set so much. I won’t be able to get this however I did get the 7676 gunship last week.
Got the 7676? Noice. I’m trying to get one of the older ones off of but I don’t have enough
We really need more UCS prequel sets
Like it’s my favourite era and seeing stuff like the AT-TE, HAVw A6 juggernaut and the TX-130 saber tank would be so awesome
Especially the juggernaut since then the mini figures may actually be bigger relative to actual clone given what a behemoth it is
Also why just limit to republic ships the AAT, DDT and super tank are all right there to be awesome sets
I was surprised that there was no Jedi Bob or comander Cody in this set. I would have loved to own those mini figures.
I like this video. I wonder how lego precieves the well warranted criticism. I will say that in past videos, you use a rather negative overall tone when addressing the mini figs, rightly so. But in this one you give praise where it's do and rationally critique the clear flaw. I still picked it up, arguably top 3 ships for me in the Star Wars universe. It's up to lego now to, not really make up for anything, but change their attitude. I feel like designers have somewhat of a God complex, where they can do whatever they want, insult fans, whilst also blatantly go against the voting system for mini figs, and to what i can only assume, laugh about it and knowingly rake in cash. If Cody is released next year In a different set, I will get it but I will feel used and abused. They know the build is awesome, but leave out the 1 fig we wanted, forcing us to get the potential future set with Cody, and knowing we will buy this one regardless with the so painfully obvious wrong troop. It's just super scummy and classic example of brands not caring about fans and milking us for money. Still have my fingers crossed for a Rex next year though, only started collecting a short time back and can't bring myself to spend $100+ on a fig, even though rex is my favorite.
If lego cared about the fans (and the prequels), we would've had an updated Captain Rex and a phase 2 Cody by now...
It’s happening! It’s finally happening! Everybody stay calm!!!!
Lego totally needs a UCS MTT and AAT
It would be cool if the disigners started including brick built figures in the scale of these UCS sets
Would it be possible to have a gunship that actually Carries 30 troops (like they actually do)
MandR is the mother who’s not mad, just disappointed
I was so disappointed that I am mad.
For anybody complaining about the doors I do not remember the republic dispatching gunships. From space. Should be obvious to a bunch of people mad at the Minifigures. I’m just glad there will be plenty of time to buy this. Clever LEGO for having a *misprint* on probably the most anticipated set in 10 years. Probably sold a few more on the hype.
Even though the mini figs are a big letdown I still like this set. (Despite me not going to buy it due to its price) My first ever big set (big as in over 1000 pieces) was the 2013 version and I loved it as a 10 year old.
@@Just_A_Rock__ I’m not buying this one, that’s way too much, I just like it. The way I was able to get the original when it came out was Christmas since it was like 120 bucks. Probably should’ve clarified I’m not getting this one lol
The mini figures is like saying “all people remember about captain Rex is that he had some blue markings”
2:40 look at any of the scenes on Utapau in episode 3 which have a gunship, and you’ll see that the ship design is exactly the same (I think) as it is in episode 2. This could’ve been an episode 3 set.
Mandrproductions: that is they wrong logo
Me: that is the galactic republic logo
After building the ship, I'm disappointed in 2 things: stickers(30 stickers!!!especially the transparent ones...) and the stud in the back of the ship(modifications will resolve the last one).
M&R: You probably won’t play with it.
Me casually playing with it: hold up
i’ve never seen someone complain about a brand so much yet still buy their product and profit off of it. actually yes i have literally anyone that’s a friend of mandr😂😂
9:10 so back in 2002 they managed to print 2x2 tiles with the republic logo, but almost 20 years later they won't?
There are alternatives to this, either old official sets or some great mocs, where you don't have to put up with questionable decisions or lazy mistakes.
Can we see a comparison of all the different gunships now including the UCS one?
^^^
I have just built this also and I removed mace and put cody in his place
I saw the photos you put up awesome job
@@LifeofLincolnDoyle 👍
This just makes me happy that I just happened to miss out on the vote so I didn't get emotionally invested in a Cody, I was just excited to hear that this was coming out
Honestly they are getting way bent out of shape about the figs
@@zanegano6328 honestly though. It’s a display set based off of AOTC why want a p2 clone? Plus since is a display set minifigs don’t even matter
Every time I hear someone complaining about the figures, I have to laugh 😂😂 P2 Commander Cody wouldnt have made sense because the model is from episode 2 lmao. I hope they put Cody in a much cheaper set imo
But they could have made the model an Episode 3 set tho, they have that power
But this set so easily could have been both episode 2 and episode 3 if they put both pictures of Geonosis and Utapau on the back of the box. The UCS Falcon is both A New Hope and The Force Awakens
@@shrilleth true, but I personally dont wanna have to pay 350 dollars for a cody figure. I'd rather them put him in like a 50-60 dollar utapau battle/General Grevious chase set. I like both the figures in the set so I dont think it draws away too much.
