I believe this combination might end up being better than her and Valegro. And it’s not because Imhotep is necessarily a better horse. As fantastic of a rider as she was back then with Valegro, she’s a lot better now. She has more experience and went the right way with it. This is the most kind and sympathetic riding that you will ever see. She may just be the best dressage rider ever now. Bravo to her and bravo to Carl as well for producing this rider and all these wonderful horses.
And I’m saying this without even being British.

I do agree. I loved watching her on Valegro, but as a rider she has become really much more better along those year. I do not like though statements like the best ever, there have been wonderful riders in the past, there are a lot of amazing riders nowadays and who knows about the future. Also, for this sport especially rider and horse have to develop together. If a horse reaches limits, the best rider can not overcome them. The same is with a good horse, just put a bad and brutal rider on it and the horse suffers and might go into decline. I am so happy for all the good riders currently, who are so very considerate for the well being of their horses and are not afraid to mention it. Of course the trainer deserves very, very much great praise. I have seen him on difficult horses and I am sure he would be very capable to ride Imothep equally well.

I agree. love love love watching valegro and her but she’s become much better through the years. not gonna say best ever as there have been many wonderful riders and there are to do but who knows. especially for this sport the combination has to grow together. if a horse reaches their limit, not the best rider can get them to go further. same with a good horse but a bad or abusive rider. the horse suffers, and declines. so happy for the good riders tdy, considerate for their horse’s well being and not afraid to bring it up. trainer deserves much praise too, i’ve seen him on some difficult horses and he could ride pete just as well im sure

Beautiful piaffe, so rarely see it done so well by a horse that is not Iberian. As for the commentator saying it’s too base narrow; rubbish, is putting it politely.! That is what it looks like when it’s done correctly from a horse with great construction and great trainers.

I agree! A narrow base?? How about applauding her for getting the horse to collect. "The aim of piaffe is to demonstrate the highest degree of collection while giving the impression of remaining in place". To me, she's nailed it.

The front leg is back instead of being perpendicular ... so closer to the hind leg eg this makes it a narrow base? ... that maybe what the commentator is referring to via the term narrow base. Theres so much to love about the test and that piaffe however the commentator was fair

A wonderful performance! I was a bit worried about the piaffe. That might have been an issue due to balancing the weight of rider and horse together . The laws of Physics teach us -like with down hill skiing- if your center of gravity is always in the middle of the line between your two legs and your weight is evenly distributed, that you will never fall. But, as soon as you shift the distribution of your weight between right and left leg, your muscles will have to adapt and compensate for the weight shift, so that you do not topple over. It becomes more complex, if you have four legs like horses. In the case of this piaffe performances I wachted the muscles of the hindlegs moving beautifully and strong but head and neck were so closed so that in order to avoid to loose balance the front legs had to come closer to the hindlegs. I was wondering how a horse with a longer back or a wider (more open) neck would have managed. And please, do not be offended by my possibly stupid comment. I am not an expert but I truly enjoy studying movements of horses with an without a rider on top of it to gain a better understanding which ones are still correct, healthy and right or possibly damaging and wrong.
    Cheers from Germany

10's for Pirouettes, beautifully engaged Piaffe. Shifting weight to the hind end, as it should be. I'm confused about the "narrow base" in the Paffe. Seems to me that's a result of the legs coming under to lift the horse.

The narrow base she's talking about is the way that his front legs are not perpendicular to the ground, instead they're coming back underneath him. When that happens, it means that the horse isn't fully shifting the weight back to the haunches!

Dujardin come to save the day! Providing a great role model for younger riders - showing them how to overbend their horses, tighten their nosebands so their mouth foams up desirably rather than gaping unattractively (although she could probably work on this as I can see straight through Fry's mouth at 3.16! Whoops!), goat on the hill piaffes with that characteristic jerky movement of a horse that knows he'll get a spur to the ribs if he doesn't perform - just fantastic and the epitome of modern dressage.
Absolutely love how this horse's hind legs never come close to tracking up, how his mouth is so distressed that spittle lands on his chest, his completely atrophied intra and supraspinatus muscles, the way his nose nearly touches his chest at 5.39 as he hauls his crippled body into a pirouette and the way his eye never once softens, not even when he's finally given his head.
