  • Hi everyone! In the last video I posted, I showed the lightbox I bought. You can basically use a lightbox to trace a photograph, lettering, a drawing, etc. In today's video, I show how I used it to make a pencil drawing from a photograph of my daughter taken when she was little. I also talk about some tips, techniques, and why in the world you might want to trace a photo.
    I hope you enjoy the video! Thanks for watching! :-) xo Jaime

    Thank you Jamie for showing just what and how is possible! I would like to do a portrait from my son - I thought putting the photo into grid lines may help me with it, but now know that instead of free drawing or grid lines, I will use the lightbox.
    You mentioned the not using of any photos etc. I would not do so, I think its an ethical question, but certainly, just copying a portrait, is also a fraud, or not Francis? Even though only the perfect copy or use of the such is counted as a fraud? I think, if it is only for your personal growth and understanding - by no means selling it, it is ok to use the light box. People have been copying since probably always! Can't see what the fuss is about if it is to be used as learning and understanding, I reiterate- not selling it!
    Don't think its right that you get the blame blame Jamie! 🙏💕

    • @JaimeLeighArt
      @JaimeLeighArt  3 года назад

      I have done the grid line technique in the past for a few portraits and it does work, but the lightbox does make things much easier. I would never advocate using a lightbox to trace and sell someone else’s work, but for working with your own photos and practicing skills it is a fantastic tool! My art mentor was a professional illustrator for 30 years and the lightbox was one of his main resources because it allowed him and the other illustrators to work quicker. Plus, once you learn skills with the lightbox it can help you draw freehand more accurately, too! I hope you do try the portrait of your son, I think you will really enjoy it. Let me know if there are any lightbox videos you wish to see also - I am always happy to take a suggestion and turn it into a video! Have a great day and thank you for watching my videos 😊

      It’s tracing with style! 😆 Not saying it’s any sort of fine art but it can help train your brain to see what’s actually there instead of what your brain thinks it’s seeing. 🤷🏻‍♀️ You should try it, it’s fun!

    So tape and a B&W photo is all I need to start tracing?

    • @JaimeLeighArt
      @JaimeLeighArt  3 года назад +1

      Hi, the short answer is “kind of,” with the longer answer being that having a lightbox, photo, blank paper, pencil and tape is all you really need to start tracing. Of course, you can use more supplies if you choose, but for practicing with drawing on a lightbox, the list above is all you really need!

    Do you recommend a color photograph or just black and white?

    • @JaimeLeighArt
      @JaimeLeighArt  3 года назад +1

      You can actually use either but a black and white photo could make it easier to see the lines. I would say test it out if you can - just put the photo on the light box with your art paper over it and turn the light box on. If you find you are having trouble seeing the lines or dark and light areas, you may be better off going with a black and white version. If it’s a digital photo you can use an app or photo editor to change it to black and white and see if that works better for you. Hope that helps!

    Real artist doesn't trace images.

    • @JaimeLeighArt
      @JaimeLeighArt  7 месяцев назад +2

      Actually, that is inaccurate- I was taught by an artist who worked at an advertising agency for 30 years as an illustrator and he and most other illustrators used tracing daily. Artists throughout history have traced also, including Picasso, Degas, Andy Warhol and Leonardo da Vinci. Tracing is a valuable skill and learning tool for beginning artists, as well as a time saver for professionals who work to deadlines. Now, tracing someone else’s work and selling it as one’s own is unethical and wrong, but that’s not what this video showcases. This is me using a lightbox to trace a photo I took myself. Clearly, we can agree to disagree on this, but on my channel I support art in all its forms and strongly disagree that there is only one way to be a “real artist.” Have a good day.
