- Drawing on rare footage of Judas Priest performing live this is the definitive retrospective of their career. This independent film features a team of leading critics and musicologists in a penetrating journey from Judas Priest’s humble beginnings during the late 70s as one of the many midlands metal bands, through to the platinum album years and beyond.
Judas Priest are an English heavy metal band formed in Birmingham in 1969. They have sold over 50 million albums and are frequently ranked as one of the greatest metal bands of all time. Despite an innovative and pioneering body of work in the latter half of the 1970s, the band had struggled with indifferent record production and a lack of major commercial success until 1980, when they rose to commercial success with the album British Steel.
The band's membership has seen much turnover, including a revolving cast of drummers in the 1970s and the departure of singer Rob Halford in 1992. Tim "Ripper" Owens, formerly of Winter's Bane, replaced Halford in 1996 and recorded two albums with Judas Priest, before Halford returned to the band in 2003. The current line-up consists of Halford, guitarists Glenn Tipton and Richie Faulkner, bassist Ian Hill and drummer Scott Travis. The band's best-selling album is 1982's Screaming for Vengeance, with their most commercially successful line-up featuring Hill, Halford, Tipton, guitarist K. K. Downing, and drummer Dave Holland. Tipton and Hill are the only two members of the band to appear on every album.
Halford's operatic vocal style and the twin guitar sound of Downing and Tipton have been a major influence on heavy metal bands. Judas Priest's image of leather, spikes, and other taboo articles of clothing were widely influential during the glam metal era of the 1980s. The Guardian referred to British Steel as the record that defines heavy metal. Despite a decline in exposure during the mid-1990s, the band has once again seen a resurgence, including worldwide tours, being inaugural inductees into the VH1 Rock Honors in 2006, receiving a Grammy Award for Best Metal Performance in 2010, and having their songs featured in video games such as Guitar Hero and the Rock Band series. In 2022, Judas Priest were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

I was first blessed to hear the Priest by my friend Steve Parsons. He played Hot 🔥 Rockin' in early 1982 at a house party. It changed my whole life. I'm wearing a Priest concert shirt as I'm writing this. Screaming for Vengeance was my first concert and have enjoyed them 13 times since. 🤘🏻 JUDAS PRIEST 🤘🏻
My first concert, Judas Priest on the Point of Entry tour. While POE is not the best album in their catalog, it holds a dear place in my heart. I love every song on that album.
Turnin Circles is a great track. My favorite song off of POE. Don`t Go and Desert Plains are also really good tunes.
Honestly, its got some overlooked gems. Solar Angels is an overlooked highlight for sure. Turning Circles is for sure an underrated tune.

The first HM band of the 80's, in the 70's! Dozens and dozens of bands I like and love, i have to mention my top three personal favorites from when I was growing up: The Moody Blues (1967-72), Heart (1976-80) and Judas Priest (76-81). After them, all the other greats follow...
How did they manage to forget Defenders of the faith? It has always been my favorite of their records.
DOF was killer!! Jawbreaker, The Sentinel, Love Bites... That tour was their best out of every tour I saw them. They opened up with Love Bites, I was surprised at that.

Sad Wings has always been my favorite album of theirs and, at least, top 5 of any band for me. (My top 5 moves around depending on mood lol) It's brilliant and not a bad track on it.
Did anyone else notice that this 'documentary' completely skipped over (never mentioned once) Defenders of the Faith or Ram It Down? 🤐 Hmmm? 🤔 Furthermore, this 'documentary' only covers JP's discography through 2005. A little disappointing since this was uploaded in 2023 and 3 more Priest studio albums have been released.

This documentary hasn't aged well at all. I've seen these music journalists in other documentaries and respect them, but they totally missed the mark on Priest. No mention of Defenders, writing off POE and Turbo, barely talking about Ram It Down, concentrating on one song (and usually not even close to the best) from each album, wtf? The background music not being Priest doesn't help.
Wow Defenders just ignored. Maybe if Ram it Down came after Turbo or Painkiller came next after Defenders of the Faith, the impact of Painkiller wouldn't had been so huge. Painkiller is their best album by a kilometer.
First album - Rocka Rolla has a legit gem in 'Run of the Mill'. That's enough for me, glad it was created and produced. No regrets. BTW - are you slowing down the JP tracks in this doc?
I always thought the title track was good....but always enjoyed "Deep Freeze". I play that album about once a year....
Idk why ppl think the fans were shocked by Rob coming out. I wasn't shocked. Nobody I knew was shocked. It was more like confirmation than coming out. We all knew it. Maybe some ppl were in denial but we all knew. I mean, it's not like he was ever trying to hide it. I think most ppl really knew about the time they released the video for heading out to the highway. And if that didn't do it we got don't go immediately after. Hot rocking made us wonder of the whole band weren't gay. But nobody cared.

The great run of albums started with Sad Wings through British Steel. Point of Entry, while not a great album, certainly had some great songs on it. Then the last GREAT Priest album, Screaming for Vengeance followed.
always singing from the time i was little it wasn't until sad wings came out that i really started to work on my voice i was 14, halford has done things vocally that no one has matched to this day. anyone who has ever been a rock singer and really worked at it knows this thats also why i know whoever is doing the singing on this video definitely isnt rob halford
I heard some things differently than I've heard before in his voice, if it was him. Then again recordings can vary greatly in sound. The methods and what media they were recorded on, maybe It's time to listen to the original vinyl again, too listen closely. Peace, Rock Hard Ride Free.
Great documentary! The only drawback was that ridiculous cover band they used. It really was a drag hearing such sub-par music on this fantastic production of the Great Judas Priest,
FYI: None of the music in this doc are original Judas Priest tracks. The culprit in this instance seems to be a band called ShagStars.

It is Tipton who does the solo in the Ripper and there is no Whammy bar - Dont know what the Tsandries is talking about. They are playing the music to Victim of Changes but its not Priest playing it

What people forget about those late 70s albums where that they were still ahead of the time compared to what other bands were doing they were so much heavier than anybody more Dynamics more special effects listen to all the records in the same era anybody in rock and roll like Led zeppelin or something and the priests albums heavier and light years ahead of their time

And they weren't dressed in Leather and spikes until the follow up Record Hell Bent for Leather. He was wearing a white karate one piece during Stained Class tour. Stained Class is the Greatest & First Heavy Metal Record ever!!!!! They didn't even know what they had acomplished yet. That record is so Dark and incredibly over looked. His lyrics are unfreakin believable. Greatest JP record of All time. Stained Class!!!!!!

"Music In Review", and they take their two best albums (Sin After Sin and Stained Class) and focus on the two crappy cover songs they recorded. Useless documentary.
And the lyrics to "Hell Bent for Leather" were written by Tipton, not Halford.

The record company wanted them in the Top 10 everywhere. Btw. Turbo got 2 Platin records and one Golden record in the USA. And they got a hell of a lot new fans. And the most important thing in the entire universe is that Rob Halfords voice got me hooked right from the start.

Nice documentary, but using a cover-band for the songs ruins three quarters of the fun. A question of money, I presume.
No, that’s them, I take it the songs are demos. That’s how they first wrote the songs an then they go in the studio and record how they actually wrote the song, then the producers help them polish the song or however they think the fans or how they think the music should sound to maybe the rest of the music world, the feel or maybe how it should sound if it’s played on the radio. Cuz the guys in the studio will maybe tell the drummer to play a whole different drum beat or maybe tell the singer to sing with more feeling or to hit a high note at a certain part of the song, even tell the guitarist to keep one riff an take out another riff or add a totally different riff in the songs. If ya didn’t know………I’m tryin not to be a prick or anything. Maybe your just not familiar with how it works with some bands, an some bands are good musicians but they have other people write their music for them. A lot of country music is like that big time! So Priest is a very talented band, like a lot of old bands, unlike today if you can sing good an your noticed, the music industry will write the songs for you……..An I love hearing bands demo tapes cuz it’s what they actually wrote an great bands like Priest , from what I heard were that good of a band that the songs didn’t need to be changed to much. I could hear certain riffs an some chords that were different, shit maybe they told Hanford to change the lyrics on certain parts, but from what little I heard of each of those songs the studio people didn’t have much input. I’m just saying if don’t know it works when a band writes a song an presents it in the studio. Cuz ya did have me thinking for a second, is that Hanford singing?Shit maybe it is a cover band an I’m totally wrong! lol. Like the producer Mutt Lange that worked with AC/DC & Def Lep, Mutts name was credited as a writer of some Def Leps songs I’ve noticed! But that even gives the band members an understanding probably of music theory an I bet learn a lot from the studio people. It’s super interesting to me. I mean no disrespect, shit you probably know this kinda stuff. PEACE!

I know Halford's voice from afar (even from very unbelievably far if he lets it rip) after having seen the Priest for over fourty (40) times between 1979 and 2022. I also know how recordings in a studio work, having done security at gigs and studios for over thirty years. This isn't the Priest in the backdrop music. It's a cover band. There's been times where recordings of some songs were done by session musicians (for Sweet for example) but never the singer. Session musicians were cheaper because, hey, they worked for the studios and came with the rent of the place. Getting the singer in to do the vocals didn't cost extra since the studio was already in use. You don't pay for the amount of musicians present but for the recording space and equipment. Studio execs are cheap bastards and turn-over every single dime but they would never ever bring in a substitute singer to do the recordings, especially with someone like Rob Halford who'd revive deaf dogs. And "studio people" never have input. Not during the recordings. They only step-in during the mix, unless the record company has plans for the band they've signed. And bands trying different approaches to a song only happens with established bands who have unlimited studio tim. They're called "takes", just like with movies and it's usually the sound engineer who calls the shots. Beginning bands have one eye on their instruments and the other on the clock to not go over the alloted time they're granted. Cheerio, lad. I suggest you have a good listen to Halford and then again lend yer ear to the music in this video.

Rocka Rolla songs were either metal or had great depth and feel, even psychedelic.
British Steel had a purpose, to break mainstream, but it was JP gone Radio Disney (term coined by Andy Rehfeldt I believe).
Anyhow, in all what-I-think-about-XYZ programs ("documentaries") where I've seen Malcolm, I disagree with him, I think he goes on what he felt at the time.

Here they are talking about every album and then they just skip right over DOTF. WTH is up with that shit? I can only think that they screwed up editing the doc. or for some reason they did it on purpose because of copywrite or some legal problem. You have every album reviewed in order and omit DOTF. The only other is Unleashed in the East live.
Love Priest, but I think those interviewed gloss over Rainbow and Iron Maiden.
