It was a a joy to watch, the quality of the footage was brilliant, the informative commentary was understandable for us mere mortals and whilst I will never be able to fly as you do, at least when I check in for more videos, can be assured "milkshake" will make me smile, whatever the subject matter..

    Used to fly Melb to Moroya for hols with relees in sixties in Centurions, Apaches & 182's either direct or via Merimbula. Via the latter, much fun doing circuits at this WW2 'drome then west along totally deserted Ninety Mile Beach etc.. Airline Traffic was mainly Ansett-ANA F27s on Cooma -Melb ie. into YMEN (a joke there somewhere) or same ex Syd., where the coastal route was also mainly Ansett-NSW F27's. Still had Air Radio Stations scattered around, but no GPS or in the case of Radar, zero coverage beyond 30 nm ML, so a lot of trust was the order of the day.

    Question: What is the influence of the camera on the wing? More fuel? Turning more to the right?
    Thank you for sharing your interesting video with us.

    • @StefanDrury
      @StefanDrury  4 года назад +19

      We found no noticeable impact on flight performance when testing the camera on the wing. Whatever tiny amount of additional drag it produces is not noticeable and requires no additional control input like extra right rudder for example. The only consideration was the strength of the mount for the force of the airflow exerted on the camera, which is why we use an all metal bracket screwed into the wing. It's also a very good icing indicator, as ice will form on the camera faster than on the leading edge of the wing, but that's a side-benefit :) Thanks for watching Frederick.

    The WIFI issue with your 360Max is the housing you have it mounted in. This type of camera only have a very weak 2.4GHz antenna so it isn't difficult to block the signal. Three things you can do to get around the issue (from simple to difficult). 1. The easiest is to try mounting it with the LCD screen facing the cockpit. The enclosure has a large opening where the screen is and that may be enough to get usable signal for it to work reliably. 2. Drill a series of holes in the front/back plates of the enclosure (make it look like honeycomb). This may impact your CASA approval so I'm not sure if it's even an option 3. Replace the housing (or at least the front and back plates) with carbon fiber or plastic. My expertise is in enterprise WIFI so I frequently deal with this type of issue (albeit on a much larger scale).

    • @StefanDrury
      @StefanDrury  4 года назад

      Thanks those are great suggestions. I can sometimes get a signal and sometimes not, it's very hit and miss. I do have the screen facing inwards (the first shot I actually put it on the wrong way around and changed it after I filmed that!) but holes in the case may be an option for sure. Thanks again.

    • @StefanDrury
      @StefanDrury  4 года назад +1

      From an IFR point of view, it's the same. As I'm not visual I have to fly on instruments, just as if I was climbing through cloud. Same as for the approach into Moruya (which will be in a future video) where I had to fly the RNAV Instrument approach as the smoke was obscuring the ground so I couldn't do a visual approach into the airport.

    Not enough is done to educate pilots on Pyrocumulus. They're incredibly dangerous. From a fireground perspective they can generate their own wind directions than forecasted which is really dangerous as a firefighter because you could be working the edge that will end up being a front. It also can spot embers anywhere up to 100km ahead of the front, create fire tornados, ember attacks,.etc

    Did you have to get LAME approval for the camera mounts? So often you see (American) vids with suction camera mounts on the outside of the aircraft - and you know that they haven't considered the pressure drop in aircraft as they climb, making suction mounts useless...

    • @StefanDrury
      @StefanDrury  4 года назад +1

      Yep, every camera mount (external AND internal) have been approved by a LAME, has an Engineering Order drawn up, and has been certified by CASA (regulator) to be used during flight. I carry paperwork in the plane for each one, that includes the suction cup on the front window.

      @@StefanDrury Very cool. That should be mentioned in passing as you wander past each mount. :) That would increase the info output of each vid. :) It may stop bad copycat suction mounts from students. :)

    What altitude is the transition level in Australia?

    • @StefanDrury
      @StefanDrury  4 года назад +1

      Transition altitude is always 10,000 feet but the transition level depends on air pressure. Sometimes we can't get FL110 (11,000 feet) for example if the pressure is too low. ATC will tell you if a flight level isn't available.

    • @StefanDrury

      IAS depends on my altitude, but TAS (true air speed) is usually around 160Kts at best economy settings for this aircraft. I can get a TAS of 170Kts but I have to burn around 4-5 gallons fuel per hour for that.

    I've had issues with my GoPro 5s and wifi on a number of occasions. That's why I was curious about the battery life and why these days I just hit record and forget (at times it seemed the wifi disconnected and turned the camera off). I should point out though that another option was available to you - just google "James Allen Ward".

      Hey Stef, the Flypad is not a bad idea. Considering that you're going to be documenting the trip, wouldn't having a dedicated device that is stable be good for the trip? It could stay in EYZ and give you a lot more certainty with the filming.

    Can you just go and buy the correct size open ended spanner for that GoPro attachment. The only thing worse than using an adjustable wrench and fiddling with the adjustment which always seems to change while you are using it is watching someone else fiddle with an adjustable wrench that always seems to change while they are using it. This is tongue in cheek/not tongue in cheek. ;-)
