Hale Kiawe | A Minimalist Oasis is Hidden Amidst Lush Grasses and Lava Rock

After years of enjoying Hawaiian vacations, a couple decided to make their favorite spot their permanent home. As minimalists with Indian heritage, they aimed to create a retreat that was warm, welcoming, and spiritually resonant, incorporating Vastu Shastra principles.
The design features a meandering pathway leading to an enclosed lanai, which serves as the heart of the home. Inspired by the region’s agrarian past, the architecture includes clean lines and geometries that complement the undulating landscape. The interior’s muted color palette and minimalistic approach avoid competing with the natural beauty, while thoughtful plantings and a preserved lava landscape create a seamless integration between the built environment and nature. Each space is purposefully designed with simplicity and functionality in mind, reflecting the owners' minimalist lifestyle.
Collaborating with architect Greg Warner and Philpotts Interiors, the project stayed true to the owners' values. Minimalism guided the design approach, resulting in a serene and unobtrusive space that integrates with its surroundings. The team preserved volcanic rock and utilized drought-tolerant vegetation, repurposing a fallen kiawe tree into symbolic log steps that connect the home with the landscape. The resulting design is both a spiritual retreat and a practical home, embodying restraint and authenticity.
