My brother Jacob and I have always been incredibly close, even promising as kids to be each other’s “best man” at our future weddings. When he announced his wedding, I assumed I’d be by his side. But I was blindsided when I got the invitation-it named Buster, our family dog, as his best man. Hurt and confused, I confronted Jacob, but he brushed it off as a joke and said I was overreacting. After a heated conversation, he and his fiancée Lauren offered me a compromise: I could be a witness while Buster kept his role. Though reluctant, I agreed.
Then, the day before the wedding, Jacob told me there would be no official witnesses at all to “avoid conflict.” I later learned from an aunt that Lauren found my closeness with Jacob “weird” and didn’t want me involved. Devastated, I chose not to attend the wedding. Ironically, Buster’s role was canceled at the last minute because Lauren thought he looked “ridiculous in a tuxedo.”
