OP's family were so used to her sister's jibes at her that they were immune to how the jibes were truly affecting OP. Her sister thought it was ok because she was never reprimanded. She took no thought of how her words were affecting OP. She just knew that her jibes had a good response from the family. It was not until OP told her mother to put her sister in her place, that her mother finally realized how OP was truly being affected. This stinks of 'Golden Child' synsdrom. Finally, the sister was reprimanded? At least, the parents finally got the message and starting putting a stop to it from all family members.

Why are the kids disappointed about the cruise? They weren’t even going. Was she also expected to randomly take a week off work with little notice. Then how was she supposed to go on the cruise with the suck-up ticket when she was the one staying home babysitting the kids?

What I do find refreshing is OP is realizing they were in the wrong.

OP is definitely entitled to pay for a babysitter. You’re the one who decided to have a child family can help out but doesn’t mean they have to do it all the time and it sounds like your brother has done a lot for you already. Just because he has no job or whatever does not mean he’s there to babysit your baby
