It seems that in the late 70s and early 80s Technics was what Sony became from the late 80s to the late 90s... the TOP Hi-Fi manufacturer of their time, but unlike SONY they never capitalized much on that. SONY managed to market and sell their products more effectively. But they mastered turntables and equalizers, something Sony never managed.
Sony came out of Japan with products for the continents in the 60s, Technics came much later in 1972 and they had a small range of products but their sound and mechanics were unmistakable far above Sony and the competitors in the audio world.
