When An Najashi passed away , Al bukhari Rasulullah (saw) says “On this day a rightous man died in Abyssinia so let´s pray on him , let´s make salatul janaza on him and Rasulullah (saw) knew it on the same day which means that Jibril (a.s) (Gabriel) came to Muhammad (saw) to inform him about that event , so it was an important event , that Jibril (alehi salam) had to come and convey to Rasulullah (saw) and the messenger of Allah , Al-Mustafa led salah on An Najashi , he prayed for him and said “ask Allah to forgive him” He was asking the sahaba to make dua for An Najashi. “AMR BIN AAS” persecution against the early muslims Eaven though the Muslims (83 men and 18 women) completely left mecca, to go and live in Ethiopia, the people of mecca wer´nt happy with the situation ! But there’s a question, and I’ll be honest, I didn’t think about it till I heard it: Why did he say “Ahadun Ahad”? I am too dim witted to have picked up on this subtlety but the sahaba were real sharp and they realised that there was something about this slogan that made Bilal repeat it over and over again. And so the question was put to him in Madinah after years had passed: Why? (He could have chosen a hundred different words to say; perhaps a more straight forward choice would have been to simply say “la ilaha illAllah’. And yet out there in the searing heat of the desert with burning stones on his chest Bilal (radhi Allahu anhu) cried out in the loudest voice that he could muster “AHAD, AHAD, AHAD”. (“AHADUN AHAD, AHADUN AHAD, AHADUN AHAD”) Now I can almost imagine Bilal sitting there, a quiet (almost shy) black man, a freed slave who still humbles himself in every walk of life in front of Allah; I don’t know much about him but I kinda imagine a soft spoken guy who doesn’t want anyone taking pity on him or thinking highly of him in any way. But he answers nonetheless, it’s a conversation among brothers after all.) Bilal said: I would respond differently to different threats and demands but I noticed that one thing angered my master, Umayya bin Khalaf, in particular and that was “Ahadun”. And how Bilal knew it angered his master the most? Umayya would beat him the hardest when he said these words; so, that was that for Bilal; he didn’t say anything other than “Ahadun Ahad” after that! That’s like saying ‘bring it on’! There are horrible tales of torture from the Makkan era and everyone who was tortured at one point or another gave up and was forced into submission (albeit temporary) EXCEPT Bilal. This giant of a man, this weak, famished and naked black slave didn’t give up. He was tortured in the desert, was dragged through Makkah with a rope tied to his neck, was beaten by the common folk; but he kept saying just one word “AHAD, AHAD, AHAD” (One, One, One) His proclamation of tawheed /Tewaheedo (Oneness of Allah) echoed through Makkah when no one else declared it publicly. At a time when no one could even whisper ‘la ilaha illAllah’ Bilal was SHOUTING it at the top of his lungs. There’s a saying in Arabic ‘al-jazaa’u min jinsul ‘amal’ ‘rewards are according to actions’. So, what did Bilal get? Well for starters; He got Jannah, that’s pretty huge I’d say, right? But Allah doesn’t leave those who do good even in this dunya. Who is Bilal? This is the Moaddhin of RasulAllah (sallAllahu alaihi wasallam); NEVER in his life did RasulAllah (sallAllahu alaihi wasallam) lead a prayer whose adhaan was not given by Bilal. Adhaan, which declares Allah’s oneness across the world and across every single moment that passes, reminds of Bilal. After fateh Makkah, there was only one voice that rose from the top of the Kabah, the same voice that shouted Tawheed in the days of torture was the one that was given the charge of announcing Tawheed on the day of victory. Islam won that day, so did Bilal. He came back home; the same place where he would shout “Ahad ahad ahad" Bilal the Great African Muslim Bilal is very lovingly remembered by all Muslims of the world as one of the earliest great African Muslim. He was born in a village in a mountainous place in Western Arabia. Bilal's father was called Rebah and his mother was known as Hamama1. They had come to Arabia as slaves from Ethiopia. The father and mother were slaves of Ummayya bin Khalaf, a rich man from the tribe of Quraish. Bilal was therefore born in slavery and served as a housekeeper. His master Ummayya bin Khalaf was not a Muslim. When Bilal was about the age of 40, it was the time when Prophet Muhammad started teaching the new religion of Islam, Bilal was attracted by the teaching of Prophet Muhammad. He accepted the religion of Islam and became a Muslim. When Ummayya bin Khalaf and his family went to worship idols, Bilal would pray to Allah as taught by Islam. In the early days of Islam the tribe of Quraish who were strong and many and lived in and around Makkah, disliked Islam. They also disliked Prophet Muhammad and his new teachings. If any person accepted the new religion, they oppressed and harassed him. He was tied with ropes and made to lie on the burning hot desert sand at mid-noon. He was then asked to forget the God of Islam and worship the 'great' idols known as LAT and UZZA. But Bilal was strong in his new belief. He refused to worship idols and kept crying “AHAD-AHAD-AHAD”, meaning “One God, One God, One God” The tortures continued and were increased. A very heavy stone was placed over his chest. Bilal could no longer bear the heat and the load so great. In the condition he lay and lost his senses. As the day neared its end, it became cooler; he regained his conscious (senses). He found that the heavy stone was no more on his chest. He wondered who had come to free him from pain. His heavy eyes slowly opened only to look at the bright smiling face of Prophet Muhammad. Prophet Muhammad had heard of and seen the torture of Bilal. It pained him extremely to learn that a true believer should suffer in such a manner. He also felt pity for the poor man He told Abu Bakr to purchase Bilal from Ummayya and set him free. This was done. In similar ways the Prophet had many slaves set free. He insisted that slaves be treated fairly and kindly. By his own conduct he also set such examples. When Bilal first came before the Holy Prophet, he praised the Holy Prophet in two poetic lines of his native language. The Prophet asked Hassan bin Thabit to translate it in Arabic. He translated it in words which means: “When in the world, the virtues are described, thou art mentioned as the model of virtues in our midst.” Among the slaves from Africa, Bilal was the first to accept Islam. He had a strong faith in Allah and a great love for the Prophet. He had a pure character. Soon he earned high respect of the Prophet and other great Muslims of the time. The Prophet liked Bilal's sweet voice and made him the first Muazzin -The Caller To The Prayers. All through his life Bilal remained a close companion of Prophet Muhammad and was with him at every occasion. When the Prophet died he was very saddened. Thereafter all his life he looked grieved and very solemn. He had gone to Madina when the Prophet had migrated. After the death of the Prophet he did not feel happy to stay in Madina. He sadly discontinued giving 'adhan' and migrated to Damascus, Syria. He died there after about eight (or ten) years. His grave is still existing in the famous Muslim graveyard in Damascus. When An Najashi passed away , Al bukhari Rasulullah (saw) says “On this day a rightous man died in Abyssinia so let´s pray on him , let´s make salatul janaza on him and Rasulullah (saw) knew it on the same day which means that Jibril (a.s) (Gabriel) came to Muhammad (saw) to inform him about that event , so it was an important event , that Jibril (alehi salam) had to come and convey to Rasulullah (saw) and the messenger of Allah , Al-Mustafa led salah on An Najashi , he prayed for him and said “ask Allah to forgive him” He was asking the sahaba to make dua for An Najashi.

The term "al-Najashi" has a variant of al-Negashi; it corresponds to the ancient Aksumite title Negus, with the variant Negash” (Amr bin Aas speaking to Ashama ibn Abjar al najashi of the Habbasha): "there are

An African slave, beaten by his masters, bullied by town ruffians and ridiculed by everyone else; this is Bilal (radhi Allahu anhu). And we all know Bilal, don’t we? But there’s a question, and I’ll be honest, I didn’t think about it till I heard it: Why did he say “Ahadun Ahad”?
I am too dim witted to have picked up on this subtlety but the sahaba were real sharp and they realised that there was something about this slogan that made Bilal repeat it over and over again. And so the question was put to him in Madinah after years had passed: Why?
(He could have chosen a hundred different words to say; perhaps a more straight forward choice would have been to simply say “la ilaha illAllah’. And yet out there in the searing heat of the desert with burning stones on his chest Bilal (radhi Allahu anhu) cried out in the loudest voice that he could muster “AHAD, AHAD, AHAD”. (“AHADUN AHAD, AHADUN AHAD, AHADUN AHAD”)
Now I can almost imagine Bilal sitting there, a quiet (almost shy) black man, a freed slave who still humbles himself in every walk of life in front of Allah; I don’t know much about him but I kinda imagine a soft spoken guy who doesn’t want anyone taking pity on him or thinking highly of him in any way. But he answers nonetheless, it’s a conversation among brothers after all.)
Bilal said: I would respond differently to different threats and demands but I noticed that one thing angered my master, Umayya bin Khalaf, in particular and that was “Ahadun”. And how Bilal knew it angered his master the most? Umayya would beat him the hardest when he said these words; so, that was that for Bilal; he didn’t say anything other than “Ahadun Ahad” after that! That’s like saying ‘bring it on’!
There are horrible tales of torture from the Makkan era and everyone who was tortured at one point or another gave up and was forced into submission (albeit temporary) EXCEPT Bilal. This giant of a man, this weak, famished and naked black slave didn’t give up. He was tortured in the desert, was dragged through Makkah with a rope tied to his neck, was beaten by the common folk; but he kept saying just one word “AHAD, AHAD, AHAD” (One, One, One) His proclamation of tawheed /Tewaheedo (Oneness of Allah) echoed through Makkah when no one else declared it publicly. At a time when no one could even whisper ‘la ilaha illAllah’ Bilal was SHOUTING it at the top of his lungs.
There’s a saying in Arabic ‘al-jazaa’u min jinsul ‘amal’ ‘rewards are according to actions’. So, what did Bilal get? Well for starters; He got Jannah, that’s pretty huge I’d say, right? But Allah doesn’t leave those who do good even in this dunya. Who is Bilal? This is the Moaddhin of RasulAllah (sallAllahu alaihi wasallam); NEVER in his life did RasulAllah (sallAllahu alaihi wasallam) lead a prayer whose adhaan was not given by Bilal. Adhaan, which declares Allah’s oneness across the world and across every single moment that passes, reminds of Bilal.
After fateh Makkah, there was only one voice that rose from the top of the Kabah, the same voice that shouted Tawheed in the days of torture was the one that was given the charge of announcing Tawheed on the day of victory. Islam won that day, so did Bilal. He came back home; the same place where he would shout “Ahad ahad ahad"
Bilal the Great African Muslim
Bilal is very lovingly remembered by all Muslims of the world as one of the earliest great African Muslim.
He was born in a village in a mountainous place in Western Arabia. Bilal's father was called Rebah and his mother was known as Hamama1. They had come to Arabia as slaves from Ethiopia. The father and mother were slaves of Ummayya bin Khalaf, a rich man from the tribe of Quraish. Bilal was therefore born in slavery and served as a housekeeper. His master Ummayya bin Khalaf was not a Muslim.
When Bilal was about the age of 40, it was the time when Prophet Muhammad started teaching the new religion of Islam, Bilal was attracted by the teaching of Prophet Muhammad. He accepted the religion of Islam and became a Muslim.
When Ummayya bin Khalaf and his family went to worship idols, Bilal would pray to Allah as taught by Islam.
In the early days of Islam the tribe of Quraish who were strong and many and lived in and around Makkah, disliked Islam.
They also disliked Prophet Muhammad and his new teachings. If any person accepted the new religion, they oppressed and harassed him.

One day Ummayya bin Khalaf came to know of Bilal's secret prayers. He called Bilal and asked,
“Oh Bilal, do you worship and bow down to the God of Muhammad?”
Bilal was not afraid. He replied,
'Yes Master, I do worship Allah, the only God.”
The reply angered Ummayya greatly. He began to torture Bilal. He was tied with ropes and made to lie on the burning hot desert sand at mid-noon. He was then asked to forget the God of Islam and worship the 'great' idols known as LAT and UZZA. But Bilal was strong in his new belief. He refused to worship idols and kept crying “AHAD-AHAD-AHAD”, meaning “One God, One God, One God” The tortures continued and were increased. Red hot iron rod were stamped on his pained body. (Peter Tosh " coming in ahad red hot yea!"
Yet Bilal would not yield.
On one hot day Bilal lay on the burning hot sand tied to the ground. A very heavy stone was placed over his chest. Bilal could no longer bear the heat and the load so great.

He had also grown weak. In that tied condition even water was denied to him. In the condition he lay and lost his senses. As the day neared its end, it became cooler; he regained his conscious (senses). He found that the heavy stone was no more on his chest. He wondered who had come to free him from pain. His heavy eyes slowly opened only to look at the bright smiling face of Prophet Muhammad.
Prophet Muhammad had heard of and seen the torture of Bilal. It pained him extremely to learn that a true believer should suffer in such a manner. He also felt pity for the poor man He told Abu Bakr to purchase Bilal from Ummayya and set him free. This was done. In similar ways the Prophet had many slaves set free. He insisted that slaves be treated fairly and kindly. By his own conduct he also set such examples.
When Bilal first came before the Holy Prophet, he praised the Holy Prophet in two poetic lines of his native language. The Prophet asked Hassan bin Thabit to translate it in Arabic. He translated it in words which means:
“When in the world, the virtues are described, thou art mentioned as the model of virtues in our midst.”
Among the slaves from Africa, Bilal was the first to accept Islam. He had a strong faith in Allah and a great love for the Prophet. He had a pure character. Soon he earned high respect of the Prophet and other great Muslims of the time. The Prophet liked Bilal's sweet voice and made him the first Muazzin -The Caller To The Prayers.
All through his life Bilal remained a close companion of Prophet Muhammad and was with him at every occasion. When the Prophet died he was very saddened. Thereafter all his life he looked grieved and very solemn. He had gone to Madina when the Prophet had migrated. After the death of the Prophet he did not feel happy to stay in Madina. He sadly discontinued giving 'adhan' and migrated to Damascus, Syria. He died there after about eight (or ten) years. His grave is still existing in the famous Muslim graveyard in Damascus. People still go to his grave to pay respect and salute him.
