Vectra C 1.8 Oil Leak Cam Cover + Gasket Replacement

  • In this video I replace the cam cover and gasket together. The leak was so bad it was running down onto the exhaust and had also filled the spark plug bores with oil.
    Plastic cam covers tend to distort with the heat of the engine and also with age so it is good practice to replace both and save doing the job twice.
    Hopefully this video is helpful to some and any questions or comments are welcome

    Thanks for the video, I'm planning to do this job shortly on my Astra H Twintop with same engine, bolts should be all right, due to them being undone for some work not too long ago, the gasket hasn't failed yet, but it is leaking a bit, so I'm not going to wait until it floods my coils and plugs. If you replace the gasket alone, it's like a 10 Euro part, and makes for a great DIY job :)

      You get new bolts with the cam cover if that is what you are replacing. The gasket will have failed because you used gasket sealant. The rubber gasket has channels that the oil runs in and back into the head, if you use sealant then you block this channel and divert the oil outwards. 😬

    Good video, especially giving little tips. If you ever have to do this again maybe put some anti seize on the dowel pins and the 1 bolt that is always stubborn. This will affect the torque reading when you go tighten the bolts but in my experience, with a gasket and a plastic cover you don't need to be super accurate.

    Thanks for the heads up on the rusty bolt, gave it a good hammer and squirted wd40 down the threads as soon as it started to move, worked back and forward and it came out easily, gasket and plugs looked like original GM parts, gasket was crispy and plugs worn to 1.3mm gap.
    New gasket and plugs fitted but still had P0301 misfire so borrowed a coilpack and the engine light stayed out and the engine ran smooth, ordered a new coil pack and car is now back running as it should.
    Again thanks for the info, question, is the EGR valve in that housing on the right side of the engine with water hoses attached.

      The pulleys fail when oil services have been neglected (not saying you are to blame) but also the VVT solenoids have a gauze filter, that I often clean out on a service as they clog up with old old / carbon deposits and once they get blocked it then goes to the cam pulleys. • @AMSVauxhall
      @AMSVauxhall  3 года назад

      You can get the cover off with the sheared bolt in place. It will slide over it but the metal sleeve inside will be rusted to the sheared bolt if that makes sense? So it just a case of plenty WD-40 and working it up with a couple of levers / screwdriver until it eventually gives. I have done one in the past that actually broke the cover before it budged on the broken bolt and in this situation you will have to replace the cover. Once the cover is off, the broken bolt is easily removed with a pair of vise grips.
