    The way I interpret is that after Grace sang to Tommy, he had a 'soft heart' moment that made him see things from Ada's perspective. Plus he wants to keep his sister safe from the possible blowback of his plans. That's why he asked Freddie to come back and take his sister away.

    • @MFBloosh
      @MFBloosh 2 месяца назад +20

      Tommy isn't a monster, but the times were different. He loves Freddie, it's his bestfriend, but he got Ada pregnant before marrying her AND he's being investigated by Campbell right alongside everyone else. So in the end, Tommy trying to send Freddie away and keep him away had everything to do with the investigation and the current situation. Freddie being there complicates things.

    The aftereffects of World War I mean so much in the beginning of this series. The soldiers, especially the tunnelers, went through hell and then came home to find their service meant little to those in power. Hence Freddie’s zeal for social reform, Tommy’s use of opium to help him sleep and quiet the terrors of war (as well as his determination to bring power to his family), Arthur’s cut-throat loyalty to his family, John’s violence, Danny Whizbang’s psychological state, Polly’s vigilance and on and on. Plus their absolute allegiance to each other is another by-product of their service. Such a good series and so well crafted! Glad to be watching it again with you. Peace …

    There's a few comments on what Peaky Blinders mean mostly about the name of the cap and blinding persons with razor blades but here's another take a found. The cap style worn was referred as a peaky because they would tilt it down to almost cover one eye and blinders was a popular slang term in Birmingham referred to persons that dressed in a dapper appearance.

    Remember, Tommy is also smoking opium, and drinking Irish. WWI was brutal all around--tunneler-- one of the worst jobs. Nikki's reaction to the kids made me laugh. Youth culture is a modern concept. Back then, child labor was real deal with no protections--legal or otherwise. Freddie and Tommy were childhood friends--that is why he is not afraid of Tommy. But he also really does not understand Tommy's role.

    There was a whole underground (literally) war on the western front in WW1. Both sides tried tunnelling under each other’s trenches to plant explosives and both sides dug tunnels to try and intercept the enemy's tunnels. If they met, the fighting would be man-to-man with pistols, bayonets and shovels due to the confined space. Both sides used listening devices to try and track the other making it like submarine warfare but underground instead of under the sea! Both sides recruited civilian miners for their digging expertise!

And ''Blinders'' are given for the sewn blades which they put between the visor and the hat. Because, you know, they cut off their enemies' sight by removing their caps and hitting them with the visor/blade. Some also say that ''Blinders'' is Birmingham slang for a gangster.

    So 'Peaky Blinders' has somewhat of a dual meaning for the show. 'Peaky' was a term for any flat cap with a peak, like the caps they were in the show. 'Blinder' was a term used to describe something or someone with a dapper appearance...while also hinting at the use of razors hidden in the brim of the peaky to to slash at the eyes and blind their enemies.

    Sorry if someone else has explained this and if there are any errors but during WW1 there was a regiment of soldiers commonly referred to as Clay kickers. They were tunnellers who would tunnel under the other enemy and try to blow them up from underneath. It was a disgusting job and as both sides were tunnelling towards each other they would often discover each other or their opponents tunnels and cave them in. The warfare has since been outlawed under the rules of engagement as the men who fought like that were extremely traumatised from what they endured.

    Tommy is always thinking and planning. He is such a great character. As good as this show is in the beginning it hasn’t actually gotten good yet! Seriously you two are in for a treat with this show!!! FYI- they are making a peaky blinders movie and yes cillian will be playing Tommy again! I can’t wait!

    In the first episode, they tell you how old the youngest Shelby boy is when Tommy walks in on him smoking by the fireplace.
    Finn: "Arthur's mad as hell..."
    Tommy: "What does a 10 year old know about hell, eh?"
    Finn: "I'm 11 Sunday!"
    Side note: as an American, I was a little shocked when I was in Ireland because I would see kids on their way to school and watched boys walk into a school (that Cillian Murphy went to!) who looked to me to be about 10, but they were closer to 15...kids just look like kids longer over there...the people, in general are smaller. I'm short and am used to being surrounded by giants and never being able to see anything in crowds, but was able to enjoy several shows without having my view completely blocked by someone a foot taller than me.

    peaky blinder
    (Peaky) refers to the Peak caps they are all wearing.
    (Blinder) the razorblades they put in the hat which they usually use on people, often they aim for the face/eyes blinding the person.

    Someone correct me if I'm wrong but I think the name "Peaky Blinder" comes from the fact that in fights they usually go for the eyes first. You can see it at the beginning of the 2nd episode when they fight the other gypsies

    40:00 Peaky is the name of the type of hats they wear. Blinders is either because they're sharp dressers or because they literally blind people with their hats.

  • @ethanclarke1066

    Great guessing for the peaky blinders meaning haha. I think the hats are peaky caps and the blinders is reference to the blades in the hats

  • @lukestark3
    @lukestark3 2 месяца назад

    The name 'Peaky blinders' is from the real life gang who wore they're hats over so far to one side, it would partially blind them therefore making their 'peakers'- eyes, blind.
    Another reason is for the blades in the hat

    It may seem like the IRA being included is just another show throwing them in as another rival, but Birmingham has a massive Irish community and them doing in business in the city would have been accurate

  • @bvn1313

    "peaky" comes from the design of flat caps (or paddy caps) they wear. if you look at their hats from a fashion perspective, the curved part of at the front of a cap is called a "peak", the way the soft top part of the hat is formed is also referred to as "peaked", with it's rounded nature and top button (or squatchee) at the centre or "peak" 🤓
    "blinders" is because of the razors they use to blind people, funnily enough sewn between the peak and the peaked section of their caps😂

    Peaky Blinders have 2 meanings. One, they wore their caps peaked, right over their brow. Two, in the show they would often blind people with their razors. Peakys was slang for eyes. So they would blind the peakers.
