These simple steps in Lightroom using the Masking Section are great for bringing Portraits to Life and making them POP! I've had lots of comments on my Photoshop 20/10 video; here's an alternative way to do it in Lightroom that I actually think I new prefer. It works a treat making portraits look like they're coming forward of the screen / paper.

This is SOOOO helpful!!!
That's great to hear
I have used this technique for the past month. Trying to perfect it and adapt it to my style. This video alone has taken my pictures to another level. I wish that you see how my art has been transformed by this technique one day. Thank you immensely
So happy i found your page 3-4 months ago because your portraits are just my style and i learned alot just your 20/10 did alot for my print z . A little tip you should do to engage your audience even more is to have a video where you critique our portraits and what we could do to make them better. That would be both fun and learning i would def send in one
Thank you so much Johan. Yeah sounds like a great idea re the critique...I'll definitely look at doing something on that at some point 👍
Thank you for sharing this , have tried this on a couple of old photos, and have been happily surprised just how much it truly makes the images pop .
That is so good to hear...thank you and thank you for watching the video 👍
Right now I'm doing a large project on animal portraits. Your 20/10 technique is just about what I was looking for. Amazing results!!! Thanks a million, Glyn. You've made my heart POP. 😆

I'm just loving the leveling up of your video editing skills, sir. So much respect for your drive towards being a great artist as well as a knowledge sharer to the photography community. ((fist bump))
Hey Buddy...Thank you so much for stopping by and for commenting! VERY much appreciated. Roll on the day we can catch up face to face...been waaaaay too long! 👍
Beautiful portrait.
Thank you
I've been looking at your videos for quite some time. Its my first go to when I'm editing portraits. Thanks so much for all your good work. By the way, I also have your books. Worth every penny!
That’s so good to hear … thank you
This was a really good tutorial. Well explained and demonstrated. Thank you.
Thanks so much
The biggest difference between your portraits and others/trending styles is your f-stop is f2.0. Personally, I love lowering my f-stop. My first beauty shoot, all the images needed to look like 1800s western photography. So I shot at f1.8 on my 85mm and added paper textures, scratches, along with a sepia filter. The final product was so believable!
Great tutorial, thanks!
You're welcome. Thanks for taking a look 👍
Absolutely astounding! NICE tutorial Glyn! I'm thinking of actually trying this process on not only portraits, but even landscapes that have subjects in the foreground. THANK YOU!!
Liking the sound of that Rich; please do keep me posted if you give it a go 👍
@@glyndewis Will do!
Damn right I'll use this from now on mate 👌🏻 Thanks
You're welcome mate
This was so helpful.
That's great to hear...thanks Felicia
Thank you, another great video...
Thank you so much William 👍
Glyn,
Thank you for sharing your face enhancing technique with and without an additional light source. I use Capture One and I am sure your 20,20,20, and 10 adjustments will work for me.
Second Comment:
Glyn,
I tried your 20/10 method on a group shot of 15 college students. I studied the before and after photos side-by-side on a full screen display and enlarged. As I scrolled past each face there is a slight but noticeable sharpness, definition, and brightness. My original was lacking and your 20/10 version is the winner. The light source was church lighting but not strong. My camera is a Nikon Z II with a 24-70 mm lens shot at F10 and low ISO.
Thank You,
Father Dan
That's wonderful to hear...thank you so much for watching and for commenting
Very helpful video, Glynn. I shoot mainly dogs and love a shallow DoF. This is a great technique for the extra bit.
Glad you like it Karen. Hope it comes in useful from time to time 👍
I like it so very much.....;-) amazing and beautiful
That's great to hear ... thank you
Wonderful 🙏🏼
Thank you
Thanks Glyn!
You're welcome Peter...thanks for taking a look 👍

Thank you
i love this channel.... i learn a lot
That's so good to hear...thank you so much for watching
Thanks for this tutorial. I'm not very comfortable with PS. I'm learning. Knowing this can be done in LR makes me so happy!!!
That's great to hear Tiffany...glad you like it 😊
You always amaze me I thought I was good with Ps and Lr but …. You are the master. I only wish my Mac OS allows the new versions of Lr Time to buy new. Thanks for every post
Very kind of you to say...thank you and thank you for looking in 👍
Thank you 🙏🏿
You're welcome Kearney 👍
Hello from Tampa, Florida... Nice, very nice!!!
Thank you so much Jacob 👍 ... Hi from Devon, UK 😉
Great video and just what I need! I have some wildlife images from my Antarctica trip and was stuck on how to enhance faces, especially on monotone seals. Thanks!
I use this on animal photographs too Sue so hopefully this will prove useful for you 👍
Thank you, I'll try this on my new puppy photos.
Great stuff! Hope it proves useful 👍
Gr8! Tkx.
You're welcome...thanks for watching
Thanks for sharing the photos. I applied the technique in camera raw and photoshop. Side by side I think Camera Raw has the edge in terms of 'pop'
Yeah I'm tending to agree with you there Gavin with the Camera Raw / Lightroom version 👍
Genius mate! Never gave LR a thought for doing this! It would also appear to be quicker than doing it in PS. Thanks for sharing 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Hey mate...thanks for that. Yeah now I've looked at this, I actually think I'll use this technique more 👍
@@glyndewis Haven't tried it yet, but definitely will do! I imagine it would work a treat on dogs as well.
really useful tip, still getting to grips with the new masking panel
Cheers Kev. Yeah to be honest every time I use it, I discover more. Great stuff especially considering this is version 1.0 👍
using LR masks is how I would have approached this and it is simple in LR! thank you so much!
More than welcome Shawnie; thanks so much for looking in 😉
Great video this and the 2010 itself, I really apreciate it because I Print every day, in my studio, portraits and photography from my photoshoots and for other people and this thecnique really works when we print!! a Big THANK YOU FROM MENORCA!!
Thank you so much. Greetings to you in Menorca...love that place!
@@glyndewis so we must see, drink a beer and talk about photography if you come on holidays some day 📸📸📸
Was expecting to scroll down and see 500k views at least! Great tutorial, great voice, great vibe. This is going to be a long night of retouches.
Thanks so much for the kind words 👍
Brill 👍🏻👍🏻
Thanks Bob
Absolutely loving this technique! Recent;y subscribed after realising how much great content you have and how simply you explain it. I have a question though, would the 20/10 technique be suitable for more feminine portraits and/or babies & kids?
Very happy to read this Jacqui ... thank you.
As for thr 20/10 on feminine / babies etc I do use it BUT at lower settings ... so maybe 12 / 6 or so , if that makes sense.
Thanks again
Salutations
Glyn
Thanks for video. Excited to try this out. I see why it would work on those images, but do you do it with all portrait? Say, a young girl?
Yeah it can work on all portraits for sure...I do use it 99.9% of the time. For some, like females / young girls, you just need to be a bit more sensitive with the settings and reduce them so that you get the impact but don't affect the skin too much...if that makes sense
Hello dear distant friend, I wanted to tell you that it`s a very nice system, I don`t have lightroom but I think it can also be done in capture one, or at least I hope so. When I didn`t have a f.1,4 portrait lens yet, to make the similar effect I used to make two masks: the first one more blurred and the second one closer to the central area of the face, less blurred. Anyway it`s nice and fast and can replace the two passes with USM20 and 10 zonal in photoshop.
Liking the sound of your previous technique Davide and yeah... this would work on CaptureOne for sure 👍
Keep well out there my friend
GREAT LIGHTROOM EDITING INFO! Question: Do you ever START your editing by hitting the AUTO TONE button? I have found this to be helpful...
Sometimes I do yeah ... and I totally iagree it's very useful
What about highlight & shadow slider? Sometimes a little tweak with these can improve global contrast. Especially when working with ambient.
Yeah definitely worth playing with them too mate 👍
Great stuff Glyn! I will try this out. What about sharpening steps? I often paint some added sharpness with the brush on the eyes. No need for that here or how do you do with sharpening?
Hi Nicke. Thanks for the kind words. Re sharpening, when I use this technique I tend to sharpen only on output eg when printing
Nice I will definitely try this with capture one. (LR is too slow)
Yeah I know what you mean. I do tend to use Lightroom (Cloud) more these days as opposed to Lightroom Classic sit's definitely quicker 👍
Hi Glyn....just a little feedback, I've been using this mask but for female faces I've found that mostly 10/6 works better, 20/10 is little too harsh.....killer technique though, cheers :)
Yeah I've answered this a few times in the comments mate; 20/10 is a guide for settings I like to use as in this case on male portraits, but for females I tend to tone it down...there are no set numbers, but rather what works best. The effect comes from using 2 layers and masking...the numbers are down to the individual 👍
This is great! Thank you! Where you print your photos?
Thanks a lot.
Re the prints, I do them myself up to 20" ; any bigger than that I use Digitalab in Newcastle, UK
A video on how to replicate the duotone capability that exists in Photoshop would be great!
Too shallow DOF for me. I would have tried to have his ears in focus as well. But I see it is your style.
Thanks for the description of how the "Texture" slider works. Not knowing this I avoided it.
You’re welcome Andy. Cheers for looking in 👍🏻
Thanks so much.. You are a great technician and an excellent teacher. Also, your presentation is fun to listen to. Do you have any videos on file preparation for inkjet printing, I am using an Epson p800.
That's very kind of you to say William...thank you.
As for file preparation, I'm actually working on a complete printing course at the moment which will be ready in just a few weeks 👍
@@glyndewis That is excellent thank you very much. I will keep a lookout for it. Be well my friend!
This looks really nice on textured skin, do you have a process for women?
Great video could you explain how you did the 'cut out ' at the beginning? Very new to lightroom, as you can tell 😀
Hi Karen ... do you mean how I selected only the face? If so that was just using a Brush in the Masking Section in Lightroom.
Glyn.... Love the video. Would you not change this up on female subject? maybe skip the first 20 and do a 20, 10. Just a question as I know they would prefer less contrast most of the time.
Thanks so much. Yeah re a female subject you could certainly do that. I wouldn't say to do it anyway but would try it out to see and just tweak the settings for that particular image. Nothing is 'set in stone' as it's very much dependant on the image and the look you're after. Hope that helps 👍
Hello! Which version of the Lightroom you have? Thanks!
Great tutorial Glyn, just a question could this technique be use on a family portrait, such as My wife and I and our 4 children to make it pop. I guess we could mask out all the faces and do this technique 20 / 10, do you reckon it would work. Cheers Wayne
Absolutely it could Wayne. All I would say is just do the 20 part only and reduce the amount if you're doing this on full length shots. The 20/10 settings are great for close up head shots; anything further back I would just reduce it as the smaller the area, the less the amounts should be. Hope that helps 👍
