- In November 1858, 25 Nihang Sikhs, led by Nihang Baba Fakir Singh Khalsa, entered the Babri Masjid in Ayodhya and performed a ritual called havan inside. Now, over 165 years later, his eighth descendant Jathedar Baba Harjit Singh Rasulpur has expressed his intention to organize a Sikh community kitchen, known as langar, during the consecration of Lord Rama in Ayodhya on January 22.
Baba Harjit Singh aims to continue his ancestor's devotion to Lord Ram by arranging the langar together with other Nihangs, a distinct sect among the Sikhs recognized by their loose, dark blue attire and distinctive turbans. Addressing the media in Chandigarh, he stated, "Now, as the consecration of Lord Rama is scheduled for January 22, 2024, how can I stay behind?"
"I do not have any association with a political party; I am solely a custodian of timeless traditions. While striving to maintain harmony between Nihangs and Sanatan Dharma, I have faced criticism due to being an amritdhari (baptised) Sikh who also wears a rudraksha mala around my neck,” noted Baba Harjit Singh. He emphasized his desire to serve devotees visiting Ayodhya from around the globe.
Reflecting on the events of November 1858, Baba Harjit Singh recounted that the Nihangs, viewing themselves as the Guru’s army and following their distinct practices, inscribed “Ram Ram” on the walls of the Mughal mosque, believed to be erected at Lord Ram’s birthplace, and raised a saffron flag. Consequently, a case was filed against the 25 Nihangs by the muezzin (Masjid's officer) at the Awadh police station on November 30, 1858."
Upon the Supreme Court's directive on November 9, 2019, to establish a trust for constructing a temple in the protracted dispute over the religious site, the court also referenced the event from 1858. The apex court ruling highlighted a report by Sheetal Dubey, the Thanedar of Oudh, in November 1858, which mentioned:
"Today Mr. Nihang Singh Faqir Khalsa, a resident of Punjab, organized Hawan and Puja of Guru Gobind Singh and erected a symbol of Sri Bhagwan within the premises of the Masjid. At the time of erecting the symbol, 25 Sikhs were stationed there for security."
The report indicated that Dubey had served a summons "to the said Faqir" and admonished him, despite which he persistently asserted that "every place belonged to Nirankar".
