Nice job Bob, they sent me one of these a while back and I liked it 👍

I was pleasantly surprised how intuitive the mic control was. I like Retevis.

I have mine set up as a base unit in a high rise and have my 6 inch antenna on a center plane cookie sheet and i reach my local repeater that is 24 miles away no problem up here in my apartment overlooking the city of Scranton. Bear Creek 725 Repeater that is. I can also hit the Dunmore one as well and i'm always told how well/strong my signal is and clear modulation. I have this radio since July of last year and absolutely love it. Great review! Thank you! WRKH707 here.

@@HOAHamRadio I love using it every day. Out performs so many more expensive radios. Have a great Easter weekend! WRKH707

Do you know if it's possible to extend the microphone with a telephone extension wire or some other commercially available wire? I would like to put the base unit in the trunk of my car where the antenna wire comes in and then run the microphone up to the front of the car. That will require a much longer wire than the coiled wire that comes with the radio. I can't find this information in the manual or in any of the YT videos reviewing the radio that I have watched.

I have not tried it, nor do I have an extension cable to try it.
My educated guess would be, yes, that would work; can't see any reason why it would not.

Could you do a comparison (if possible) to the Midland MXT275? Im on the fence between these two.

I don't own the Midland MXT275 so I won't be able to do the direct comparison. Based on the published specs they seem very similar, with the exception the Midland is 15 watts, the Retevis is 20 watts.

One other thing to note is that unlike the MXT275 the RA86 is wide band capable on all channels.

It's an rj-45 connector also known as an "internet cable" or ethernet cable. Bigger than the rj-11 that telephones used with 8 wires vs 4 that phones used. Didn’t want you to try using the wrong extension if you ever did.

Marketing calls them "privacy" tones, but "anti-interference" is a better term. My amateur club's repeater frequency has tones both on Tx and Rx so a neighboring repeater on the same channel can be ignored, if I program both into my radios.

I don't use PL tones much, so explaining them....I feel like the blind leading the blind.
