I love love love both antique flip top tables and more recent drop side tables when decorating. The candelabras 'WOW". Patrick you are a deadpan humorous person...so funny thinking of you sitting there bidding away with a wine.. What fantastic bargains guys!
Isn’t that a lethal combo! Now add wine and it’s major damage 🤣. Happy to hear I’m not the only one in danger! There was an auction in Chicago Wednesday and there is one in Palm Beach coming up. We decided not to bid on anything…….. packing and shipping the whole house to France is already a huge undertaking. It was a difficult decision. 😂🤣😂. Be safe!
Hi Rick. Well, that is bad news. The same auction house just had a 3 day auction...... It will be the next vlog. UHaul is rented for this Monday. My car is not large enough. Stupid, I know, since we need to transport all of that to France from Illinois. 🤯🤣 Hope all is well.
Hi Sarah. Glad you enjoyed our vlog. It’s wonderful that there are so many wonderful people in the chateau community. We are slowly getting to know more of the other chateaux owners and the community enthusiast. That has been surprising reward. Thank you.
Gents, what glorious buys!!! A tipsy, accidental auction, eh? Whahaha, I'll use that argument when next I plunder an auction. :) The cabinets, beautiful! The first one a mix of the Premier Empire and the Louis XVI and XV styles in gilded bronze decorations and shape. Typical for Napoleon III. The table, all beauties, especially the George III and the one you already had. Truly gorgeous! The Dutch one I recognise, I am Dutch :) The candelabra or in French girandoles, beauties! Yes... slight difference in height. The big one maybe nice on a column or a high round table? The trumeau is a mix of Louis XV and Louis XVI. a truly lovely one. As for the music box and it's size... you're not the first, nor won't be the last to be suprised after an auction haha. Happen to me too. In all, congratulations!!! Your acquisitions at auctions are always exquisite!! Gems for your chateau.
Thank you Cherie! We were quite pleased with ourselves (not a good look on me, I can tell that much). 😂 I love that we make you laugh. Thank you so much for sharing. Hugs and a Happy New Year to you and your loved ones. 🎊🥂🎊
I certainly did enjoy this video. I love your purchases, maybe the large candelabra. I’m glad I’m not the only one who doesn’t necessarily pay attention to the lots🤣Nothing like a surprise❤️
Well, you should get tipsy more often. Your purchases were beautiful. Just finished remember that when you finally find your chateau, you will being shopping in brocantes all over France. (Buy a van instead of a car!).
I'm working on getting to that tipsy state right now..... Glad you like the purchases. Once I picked them up and came home, we were both happy too. It's too funny that you talk about a van. We are leaving our cars here in the US. We are talking about buying a smaller car to do the shopping in town and a van to buy furniture and to get building materials. Just had that conversation yesterday evening. Great connection! Thank you so much. xxx
Patrick you did very well I think. Drinking at the online auction didnt hurt you too much and I really love your mirrors. Cant wait to see you do your own Trumeau.xxx
Hi Carol. Thank you for your comment. The wine and champagne was delicious, I have to admit that. It's going to be fun to actually build a Trudeau. Fingers crossed that a chateau will smack us with instant love and we'll soon be able to pack up here. Be safe.
This made me laugh! I used to work for an online auction house and I can't tell you how many of our customers would come in to pick up their winnings and exclaim "It's so BIG!" I was an attributionist and when recording my lots I used to measure the items to the 1/8 of an inch. To think! No one reads my careful measurements????? LOL! Great items -- I loved them all. Remember: NO DRUNK BIDDING! Cheers from North Carolina
Now you made me laugh. Thank you!!! Too funny. Of course, just like you so meticulously did, all measurement were there…. I have no excuses but blame the wine. Glad you liked our bounty. Any favorites? Our best wishes to North Carolina. Thanks for your wonderful comment. 💕
Patrick and Stuart, you are both so charming and engaging in your videos. I just love your humour, you and your journey are such a pleasure to follow ❤️ Vielen danke an Euch beiden. ❤️
Hey Irene. Thank you. You made me blush. Happy that you are enjoying our big adventure. Always a pleasure to see you in the chat rooms during the premieres. Thanks for following.
Hello there! You bet we will be ready for you to visit……. We’ll, once we have bought our chateau. Glad you like what we do when I’m tipsy. 😂🤣😂. As always, love your comment. Thank you so much. Xxx
Best wishes to you too. We would have enjoyed moving to GB, if it weren’t for the weather. We have been many times traveling and always loved it. Thanks for joining us on this journey. 💕
Hey Glenn. I suppose you have it spot on. We did get lucky. No idea why other people didn’t bid but I’m not complaining. Glad you like the stuff. Do you have a favorite? Thanks for watching.
Hi there. Thanks for watching. That clock is so cute. Glad you like it too. Hope all is good. We should talk/email about support...... I have a few ideas....... Hugs
I was thinking - what an idiot I am - because now we have to store the stuff and eventually put it in a container and ship it to France. We could have bought them there. But it was fun and that's all that really maters. 🥰🥰🥰
Would love to see the two of you out at LaLacelle for a bit...great home base to check out Chateaus first hand and a fresh set of four hands! ❤️🇨🇦 Mariya
Hi Mariya. It’s funny you said this. We have talked to Terry and Ash and have planned to visit them on our next trip. We love their vlogs and Stuart and I have done two large scale renovations together. One will be in Wednesdays vlog. Thank you so much for your comment and I love that you had this great idea. Xxx
@@patrickjourneytothechateau8243 I would just love to see the two of you out there! I feel like, Tracy and Tony being my age would love to have a bit of the pressure off....we can still do much at this age, if we're healthy and lucky....we just don't have the bounce back or ability to blitz for as long....so there's that aspect. Not to mention Tracy is raising a Grandson and raising kids is work and requires time. I also feel as though both of you together with Ash and Terry would be a powerhouse for this stage of each of your journeys...It would give the LaLacelle bunch a push over the top and at the same time this would literally push the two of you closer to your goal in many ways!!! The minute they mentioned the two of you in their last vlog I went 'YES'!!! Honestly, you would all be the lucky ones and...there's room. Look forward to seeing what you can pull off and, I will envy you every step of the way! ❤️🇨🇦 Mariya
Aloha Patrick and Stuart, chandelabras, chandelabras, chandelabras. Gorgeous tables, gorgeous tables, gorgeous Patrick and Stuart, inside and out. Merci for sharing your new treasures with us. Beauty makes everything better, inside and out.
Whoa! Sorry but I have to assume that you had luck on your side! I doubt I would have been able to get those same pieces at the same price as you!!! Congratulations! Those are fabulous! And if you need to sell, you will be making your money back and with a whole lot more!!!
Hi Jennifer. This was not normal for us either. Maybe most bidders had more wine than us and forgot to bid! It was all plain luck, we agree. However, this could absolutely happen to you too. Just only once a peace to so. Loved your comment. Thank you so much. Now, any favorite item for you? xxx
I love you guys! I wait in anticipation for your vlogs and you never disappoint. Great purchases! I, too, love flip top tables and have several. I keep one open in our library with a puzzle on top. You’d be amazed how often you’ll find a guest or two sitting at the table, with their wine, working the puzzle and thoroughly enjoying him or herself. PS….Yep, I’ve also done a little scary bidding while under the influence! 😆
@@ginny736 We love you right back. Are we related by any chance? Seems we are a lot alike!!! I love it. Bidding under the influence is a great way of putting it. It was a long day, we were tired but happy and then this auction happened..... So much fun. We laughed quite a bit. Love the idea of a puzzle. Occasional furniture is great. I hope we soon have some good news about going back to France. Hugs.
Hi Fiona. Hope all is well. Still cold? We'll go from -13 yesterday to 14 next week. Hate weather like that LOL Glad you like the vlog. Be safe and thank you as always, we appreciate all your comments!!! xx
You two are really fun to watch. You have exquisite taste and it inspires me to keep hunting for treasures! Thank you for posting. Donna from Massachusetts
Hi Donna. Truly appreciate your kind comment. Never stop hunting for treasures, please. Thank you of watching and I hope you are not having the below zero temperatures we are approaching here in Woodstock, IL! Hugs
Hi Sue. Marengo. Wow indeed! We moved here 8 years ago and are now ready for a new adventure. We are just between Woodstock and Bull Valley. Makes me so happy you found our channel. 🥂💖🥂
Hey there Doug. Hope all is well! I’m glad we are not alone in tipsy town for auctions. 🤣. You are right, we got lucky and had enough sense to not over bid. Thanks for commenting. Any item we got you like best?
Patrick! You crack me up! You guys got very lovely pieces and hey that influenced bidding sure came out well!! I love the huge candelabra! Absolutely gorgeous! Love love a bargain!
Hey Luisa. Glad I can make you laugh. I’m a bit of a doofus. I’ll not make it a habit to get tipsy but it was really fun. The candelabra is really pretty, I agree. Thanks for a great comment.
We are very happy for both of you and Love everything you won at the auction! Can’t wait to see it all come together when we visit you in France!! Love, your neighbors. CL and GC
OMG. Those pieces you have bought are stunning. I love Georgian card and tea tables the most. I do appreciate the elaborate design of Napoleon III style commodes but prefer Georgian elegance and simplicity. I love the demi lune table in particular, can imagine it with the picture or mirror above and the bunch of flowering orchids in some fancy porcelain dish. Though the chateau demands the grander scale perhaps, when more is more. The scones are so classy. The clock most likely had some ormolu mouldings in shape of the garland or something similar. You will be able to find a suitable replacement for it in France, no doubt. Well, you said that it is not about chateau hunting. I believe it is about getting ready for chateau. 👍
We too love Georgian. I bought a George III secretary with a glazed book case in 2002. Has moved with me ever since. Love it. We hope to have one salon with French XVIIIth century style furniture. We are ready to find our chateau and start renovating. Thanks for your input! 💞💞💞
@@patrickjourneytothechateau8243 I'm a sucker for really good marquetry and nicely coloured marble, but the understated elegance of Georgian mahogany also has place in my heart.
Enjoying the vlogs very entertaining and detailed. Not sure if you have seen this Chateaux Patrick & Stuart 19th Century Chateau With Outbuildings On 8ha 21a 35ca Bengy Sur Craon, Cher, Loire Valley. Hope you don't mind some assistance. Things always look better tipsy and no inhibitions. Thanks for the laughs.
Hey Jennifer. Thank you so much for your comment. We take all the help we can get! Very grateful for your suggestion. We saw this chateau on Figaro and - I’m going to regret saying this I fear - it’s a bit too perfect….. Not enough projects. But it is a very pretty and balanced chateau!!! Glad you enjoy the vlogs. It’s not easy being the new vlog and to create something with its own style. I have to say, that I am not often tipsy and that time in France it turned into so much fun. Thank you again and please don’t hesitate to comment. we love your input.
Hello Melissa. Thank you. Happy you like them too. Could have been ugly….. being tipsy and all. Thank you for your comment. Did you have a favorite piece?
Patrick and Stuart - what timing! Loved all the things you got at the auction. Earlier this morning I was bidding on some items in a Leslie Hindman auction. I won 4 ebonized bronze empire sconces. I have been bidding in her auctions for over 20 years. In fact, one of my favorite items from her auction, I actually had to import from Australia, a duchess brisee. Love your vlogs. Good luck.
Hi Leslie. I loved your sconces! We had bids in on two lots but they went above our max. Too funny! It’s amazing to think that we met through RUclips and joined the same auction virtually. How interesting. I met Leslie at a charity auction in 2001 and she is a lovely lady. It is a small world. 6 degrees of separation….. So glad you found us and we connected. What item did you like best of the lots we got?
@@patrickjourneytothechateau8243 Yes, I was thrilled when I finally found the right one. I looked for many years. I bought new material last year and maybe will try to reupholster it next year. the material is a silk with embroidered flowers. One of the original cushions was damaged in shipping (also silk) but I could never find a good match. So, I will just change the surfaces that you sit on and leave the backs as they are. But that's not the piece to be envious over. My dining room is the place to drool, and not over food. The table - Louis xiv Boulle (10 foot, no leaves), massive 9-foot matching sideboard with a 400-pound slab of marble and Boulle mirror above, Matching china closet, Boulle secretary and soon to be delivered Boulle game table. They are not period pieces, but they are also not new. Table, china closet, sideboard and mirror are in excellent condition. I am presently restoring the secretary. and the game table (early 19th century is a total mess). Yet another project!!
@@leslierosenfeld1943 OK Leslie. You have got me drooling and it's not pretty! Like you, I don't mind well made pieces, even if they are not period. Not a purist. More pragmatic. We are planning to do our own upholstery and restorations (if possible). Have done quite a few in the past. I can imagine your dining rooms and it really must be stunning. I love your comments. Thank you.
Hi Susanne. We got lucky that we ended up with nice things. Truth be told, we really were only tipsy. Now that you made me think about it, I think we do. To need any additional Christmas presents. Thanks for your comment. Made me smile. Any purchase that you’d have bid on?
Patrick, I know you heritage is German but you sound if you are Irish! 🙂👍 Your videos are great, especially around architecture. You both did well at that auction! Looking forward to your future French Brocantes and entrepôts d'antiquités videos! 🙂👍
Thank you! We are looking forward to being in France and going to brocantes and bringing home some nice pieces to a chateau without worrying about how to ship them across an ocean!
Hello there. Thank you for your wonderful comment. I grew up in Germany. My parents took me to England to learn proper English. And then I moved to South Africa in 1999 to volunteer for one year. Like a sponge I absorbed that colonial English and now I’m a complete mix of influences. We are both very happy that you liked our tipsy purchases. Can’t wait to buy the chateau that will come our way soon (we hope) and start to shop for antiques. Thank you for being on our journey with us. Now, what auction item was your favorite?
wow, wow, wow, your treasures from the auction just keep going! I loved everything, and I am terrible about not reading descriptions too! I don't build things and so sometimes, those measurements don't mean anything to me, until I can see the item and what space it will go into. Lucky and great finds!
Hi Pam. Thank you so much. We did get lucky! Unfortunately, there just was a 3 day auction of the same auction house......... It ended yesterday, February 4, 2022..... That will now be the next vlog and even more to pack into a container that needs to be shipped across the country and the the Atlantic. Oh well. Sounds like I'm complaining..... I'm not, I'm sitting here with a huge smile. Hugs and please be safe
Isn't it funny how that works! Hi Janet, you made me feel better because we are not alone! LOL There was a 3 day auction at the same auction house. Oh lord. I have rented a Haul van for Monday to pick up the damages. LOL Thank you and be safe
Lovely ❤️ Those were some wonderful finds. Great antiques are hard to come by here in Colorado. Not many quality Brocantes in these parts. Those will be some well traveled antiques by the time they find their home in France.
Thank you Jayson. We got lucky. It’s only in Chicago that we have some very nice antique stores and auctions. It makes sense that it get harder to find good brocantes the further West one goes. Our antiques are from France and England mostly. They’ll wonder how they got back in Europe where they started….. thanks for your comment. Any item you liked best?
@@patrickjourneytothechateau8243 Oh man, that’s really hard to say. I really loved them all. If I were shopping for my home, I’d have to say one of the flip-top card tables. I could actually use one of those right now. But if I had a larger house and somewhere to put it, I’d definitely have to say the Meuble d’Appui. That piece is just gorgeous. But again, they are all beautiful.
My sister will kick my butt if I don’t ask which part of Germany you are from. She lived in Passau, Bonn & Munich. My friends live in Potsdam & Frankfurt.
@@wenDesigner No butt kicking! I was born and raised in Hamburg. I had family in Bonn (actually Bad Godesberg - really pretty), Passau is gorgeous. Munich, well, what is not to love I could live there in a heartbeat. Potsdam is just amazing and Frankfurt.... Oh well, no comment. You made me smile! Thank you and give my regards to your sister. GutenAbend !
Hello Johanna. All together I think we paid about $2,000. We stopped to not have any further furniture to pack to be shipped to France…….. Please be safe.
Hello Fernando. I think you are correct. On the sides and the base. Game tables are always so useful. I love them. Happy you liked what we bought (even though slightly tipsy). And I love your name.
Hi there. The marble top is almost gilding the Lilly. Your suggestion is quite a good possibility. The marble top might have been a later addition . It’s a very pretty marble though. The one issue with marble is that it’s porous and can stain easily (red wine). I’ll ask Stuart is he has a photo and he can put it on Instagram. Great comment. Thank you.
OMG! What scores! Love Hindman. I tend to go crazy at auctions. Ive purchased art, antiques and even my 1914 Manor house at auction. LOL! I have a similar but small music box that plays The Four Seasons. We should get together! I live in Evanston.
Hi Janet. We got lucky. First time I met Leslie was at a charity auction 20 years ago. She’s a great lady. We all should let loose at an auction at some point. We had such a fun evening. Amazing that you bought your house at auction too. I love Evanston. Got my masters at NWU. We should absolutely meet! 👍🏻
That was fun! Out of my league, but then I am a glass junkie! LOL! (We all have our antique vices, don't we?) Seriously, I did enjoy the video and learned a bit about things that I would, otherwise, never be exposed to! Thanks!
Hi Lawrence. Thank you for another great comment. We can’t all have the same passion. Glass is amazing and so very collectible. And spot on, we all need to have our passion. We learned a lot too. I’m ok with Georgian antiques and Biedermeier furniture. These French antiques give us a whole new field to explore. Thanks for your support. What piece, if any, did you like best? Xxx
@@patrickjourneytothechateau8243 They were all nice antiques. The music box is amazing and the marble top chest was beautiful. The rectangular drop top table was unusual to me. I only remember oval and round ones.
@@lawrencebaker2318 Hi Lawrence. The music box is great. I'm not certain why I did bid on it. The goal was to get practical furniture. Oh well. Tipsy! The rectangular table is, I think, very much a country table. Not the elegant London homes. It's really quite sturdy and very heavy. I was thinking that I have a few glasses from my grandparents (multi color bohemian) and one glass that seems to have come from the White House in DC from the 1800s. Sorry, I talk too much. Be safe my friend
tipsy auctioning works in your favor! what great finds and you gave me an idea now to build my own trumeau mirror with a beautiful mirror I already have. great items you won all around! are you storing them or using them in your current home?
Tipsy is OK as long as I am not driving I think. I cook better with a glass of wine or sherry as well. 😂 Thank you for watching and your wonderful comment.
I would say your clock is from the Restoration era (1815-1830), therefore after the First Empire. of the popular Lyra type. Is the pendulum suspended by a silk thread ? If not the movement has been altered. The meubles d'appui are definitely Napoléon III ( 1852-1870). The sconces are 19th century in Louis XVI style. In the Us the prices are as low as they are here in France, probably due to the disaffection for period or style fourniture nowadays.
Hi Francois. Please allow me to say that I love your input and knowledge. Thank you so much. Movement must have been altered. Such a cute clock. And yes to Napoleon III. Not my favorite pieces but pleasing. I fell in love with the sconces. Definitely 19th century, I completely agree. We can’t wait to move to your country. Please don’t hesitate to give us more input. We always love to learn.
@@JourneytotheChateau Thanks for your kind words. I am no specailist simply an amateur. If you have an interest in antique clocks, some months ago I made a contribution on the FB group " Clock collectors UK" on " The Paris movement- French neoclassical clocks
Guys you don’t have to “like” my comments since I am going back to the beginning of your Vlogs. You reminded me of the time that I went to Sotheby’s, NYC who was selling Katharine Hepburn’s estate. I really really wanted a piece that looked like a chest of drawers but in miniature. I was bidding, praying that I would get it and the price was getting a bit too high and all of a sudden the bidding stopped and I won. I was shocked though it cost me about $4000! 😉 It looked like a jewelry box but I found a sewing pin inside. I have Katharine Hepburn’s sewing pin 😮
A normal light bulb socket won't have to be changed for your lamps, just the plug for the wall...for smaller light bulbs such as the flame bulbs for chandeliers will all have to have the socket changed and the wires soldered to the correct size if that is the design... I recently bought a couple of lamps here in Paris with old batons instead of screw in sockets, and there is no such thing as a LED small light bulb with the batone to fit into the sockets so I have to pay to get those fixed, electriciens do a really crappy job on replacing those small sockets, so be forewarned. I had a Tiffany lamp and it needed three small screw in sockets replaced and they really made a mess of the thing. it works but when I take the shade off to replace a bulb I get angry all over again.....
Hi Kevin. That is indeed great information. Maybe another skill we need to learn? Exchanging plugs is easy as you mentioned. We have a large 19th century crystal chandelier. I hope I don’t need to retire that. 😳.
I can only imagine how frustrated you were about your Tiffany lamp. I’d be angry too. It’s hard to find highly specialized workers here too. So besides continuing to relearn French, trying to figure our French electric wire it, I’ll add converting laps a d I am so very thankful for your input.
Your lyre form clock is - problematic. The gilt bronze body is likely incomplete, the two holes visible on the side of its case certainly relate to an element now missing. The two block support is unusual - one would have been sufficient and more typical. These bases usually (pretty much always) had gilt bronze feet, of one form or another - are there holes in the corners underneath? The word "style" in describing antiques means - made at a date after the time the style was current, so a "period" piece would never be described as "style" in a (serious) catalogue. The clock could well have been assembled in its present configuration long after the early 19th century. by someone with a couple piece of pink marble at hand.
We knew that some of the bronze decorations were missing. And sure enough, there are 4 holes in the bottom where the feet would have been. Yes, style always means made later than the period. Finding an 18th century chateau will pose challenges because there are not that many 18th century pieces out there and often way out of our price range. And some things are just better newer (like a bed). Thank you so much for your wonderfully detailed and informative comment. If it weren’t fo you, I’d maybe never realized the clock had feet!
I hadn’t thought that it could be a married piece, but that could be. You’re right about the feet, which could have been paw feet or spindle for this style. The missing ornament is unfortunate, but I don’t mind some of that when a piece retains its overall lines, and it actually gives a piece a bit of character and history - like your favorite great-uncle, who will tell you the story about how he got his bum leg landing in Normandy. It is possible to find suitable odd bits of ormolu online for cheap. If the clock had been perfect, it’s price would have been much higher.
Thank you, John. As Patrick mentioned, we were aware of missing decorations and that it was a 19th century clock in the "style" of Empire. It is fairly typical for us to acquire something like this at a low price that needs restoration, and then have it become a project for us. We are quite handy at sculpting, painting, and gilding, so if we can't find what was actually missing, then we will just create something ourselves to turn it into our own Empire style art piece that is still a working clock. Thanks for your input!
@@JourneytotheChateau As Doug Kelley says, there are, now & then, 19th century replacement feet out there (on French eBay). I'm not seeing any reason to consider the metal parts of the clock to be later than c. 1830 - it's a Charles X period piece, with losses. You don't see fakes of the period out there, in the 19th cent there was, if anything a glut of originals - so no need for fakes. And fire gilt bronze started dying out after 1850 - & your piece is fire gilt. Don't try to re-embellish - it has a nice clean if slightly bare look. You probably won't want to do this - but I would lose the bottom block of marble with the holes and attach feet to the smaller piece- it would have a much better , more balanced, less clunky look - and no holes staring back at you!
Hello Jackie. Your question is giving me sleepless nights. We have many more pieces of furniture. I bought a secretary from 1770 with glazed bookcase. Big container and lots of padding I suppose. Nice bargain is putting it lightly. Acquiring several exquisite pieces at one auction at those prices is crazy good.

Hey C&G. It was such a fun evening and being on a chateau hunting trip made this auction even more fun. See you soon. Hugs💕💖💕

@@patrickjourneytothechateau8243 Actually I liked all you showed. Beautiful items.

Ohhhhh. And I am so envious about your duchesse brisée. How fabulous. 💕💕💕💕

Thank you.

@@lawrencebaker2318 Hi Lawrence. The music box is great. I'm not certain why I did bid on it. The goal was to get practical furniture. Oh well. Tipsy!
Good information, Francois! Thank you!

Hi there. It is Leslie Hindman Auction Chicago. She now has auction houses in multiple cities. Thanks for watching.
We get notifications for new comments no matter what episode, so we will "like" it if we like it. 😂😂 very cool about the sewing pin! 😮😮
Great information, Kevin! Thank you!!
How are you going to ship all these wonderful pieces?
Hello Jackie. Your question is giving me sleepless nights. We have many more pieces of furniture. I bought a secretary from 1770 with glazed bookcase. Big container and lots of padding I suppose.
