I've really wanted to hear your take on this particular entry in the series. Yakuza 4 is my least favorite of the main games and yet I always see it ranked really high in fan rankings of the games. Your critiques always make me re-think a lot about these games, so I'm yearning for the theme-heavy part 3 already! Your stuff is awesome snakerer! Keep at it!
oh my god it took me two playthroughs and this video before I finally put it together that Lily was supposed to be the serial killer I was always like "what does this have to do with anything"
Seriously such a strong start to the game, Akiyama could carry his own franchise honestly. The Sky Finance substories were some of my favourite in the series so far. My only beefs would be the combat begins to drag when you're trying to do completion tasks and hostess maker is still just looking up a gamefaqs sheet so you can finish it as quick as possible
Praise be to you Snakerer, blessing us with another banger of a video in those weird times ! I started the series with Yakuza 0 about 2 years ago, right now I'm about to start 5 on the remastered collection (also played through Judgment). So far it's been a blast to me all the way. Not to say that I liked each game equally - Kiwami 1 was starting to get on my nerves by the end, have to admit - but even then I have yet to find a title that I despise or that simply disappoints me. This whole series is just so damn fascinating to me that I'm willing to accept the tidiousness to get to the many, many wonders each game present to me. Yakuza 0 was such a hit to the face in the best possible way for me. When I first finished it, I seriously started to wonder where was this series all this time ? How did I even survived this whole time without getting into it ? Now granted, I didn't had a PS3 so the awnser is pretty obvious there, but still. 0 had such a bold style, nothing was compromised. It's kinda hard to explain for me personally, but I'll just say that it felt like the game itself just loved "being a game". It didn't try to make itself look like a film more than anything - even with the great directing its cutscenes have the quality of its writing and the A+ actors performances. It felt like an experiences meant to be consumed the way it was presented, as a video game, and it excelled at it. I'm really sorry if all of this seems like nonsense, the point is I loved it and made sure to continue the series just to get this experience again. And overall, I loved my time with the series. Of course some details are better in some games than others for me, some things that I enjoyed is not liked by the general consensus (and vice versa). But so far there wasn't a single time where I regretted ever getting into this franchise. Ever game had something different to add to the formula, so even if I didn't liked everything I at least remember every game distincly. Which is more than I can say for other long time video game franchise I spent time on. I love that every game is not affraid of shakng things up. Which is also why I'm looking forward to 7 despite its hard choices (though the weird new game + DLC, I could do without). Its been in the DNA of the series from the beginning, this time just on a bigger scale. And I do understand people not liking this choice, to each their own. Anyway thats all for me, great job again on the video and I already can't wait to see the rest ! (also apologies if there's any weird phrase turns, english is not my home language)
Hey, I started Yakuza 0 about a year ago and am on 4 via the HD collection now. Im on part 2, chapter 4 right now. I'm not a huge fan on the engine 3 and 4 use, but i think i was just spoiled by 0 and both kiwamis. Overall, my opinion of the games so far really doesn't stray from what the fan base normally says. 0 was great, kiwami 1 was eh and 2 was great. 3 was ehh and I actually had no idea the virtual fighting minigame was in it until i saw your video. The plot of 3 was deff one of the messiest in the series but I also really enjoyed all the bright colors of Okinawa, it was a real change of pace for a Yakuza game. I'm loving 4 so far, it's actually really nice to have all these new chars to play as instead of just Kiryu. I do wish the substories would be a bit better though. Nothing in 3 really got to the level of 0 or 2 yet and I've done all of Akiyama's substories and a lot of Saejima's and though the series stuff is good, nothing's really been too silly and memorable yet. I'd be happy to talk about it more if you have any questions for someone relatively new to the series who is only playing 3, 4, and 5 now that the HD versions are out. EDIT: I should probably also mention that I kind of ruined my first impressions of 3 by playing it on hard mode, I had no idea what the AI was like in this game and the constant blocking/giant health pools for the bosses was really making me lose interest fast. Near chapter 11 or 12 or so I just kind of pushed through the story, I want to replay that game but on an easier setting eventually so I can fully enjoy it. 4 on hard mode is a totally different game and I'm left wondering why they made the AI in 3 block so much, even in the HD remaster. It just made combat a chore for me.
Ah, whats this? A new Tehsnakerer video? I know what I'm gonna listen to and multitask; since absorbing information and hunting monsters or playing literally any game is great with some backgroudn stuff
One of the things i like about the leveling system in 4 is how it seperates health upgrades from skill points. Kiwami 2 is my favourite of the series (controversial opinion i know) but i find it frustrating how on your initial playthrough you will often find yourself not upgrading your characters skills ahead of upgrade health, defence, etc. This means gameplay initially can be slow and clunky and lacking in options. By keeping the skills and stats seperate you get the improved stats but at the same time get to pick how you develop the characters skills.
Upon consuming the three PS3 titles back to back recently, I can say 4 is the better “Overall” contender of the bunch. 3 is vanilla and 5 is nuclear hot whereas 4 hits a solid balance despite having some spice here and there.
I should preface this with the fact that I've never played any of these games, but I am aware of them. With that said, I should probably explain my view on the plot... You know what? Nevermind. It isn't worth it. Love your videos, man :)
Yakuza 0, Kiwami 1 and 2 starter here as requested.. Yeah, you really feel the old school crash hit hard into Yakuza 3 ( All I wanted them to add in touchpad maps) Yakuza 4 was my apex of the Remastered Collection to the point of tying for second with Kiwami 2 behind 0. The multiple character approach really pushed me to finish all the sub stories with a bigger cast. And I think there’s a character I grew to love more which you will be covering soon.
Damn it, Snake, I've been itching for a new video, but you've only gone and reviewed a game I fully intend to play somewhere down the line and don't want to spoil. Ah well.

I know my feelings right when Tehsnakerer uploaded a new retrospective video on the same date, and it's even better that it's from the Yakuza franchise I'm wondering if you'll ever tackle Shenmue series in the future, there's fascinating history behind that franchise too as it's could be looked as the Proto-Yakuza series but with unwarranted pacing and jankiness slapped into it, even right to the extremely questionable direction of Shenmue 3 and the history of their cancelled spinoff projects of it

I really love your stuff i find myself watching all your stuff over and over again evan if i have already seen it hell i was watching your watch dogs 2 reveiw before watching this
I honestly think I like Yakuza 4 the most, for probably the right reasons. It's full of great, random, kind of stupid twists, that perfectly show every side of the Yakuza Crime Drama Genre. The genre itself is full of pointless, random twists that aren't ever explained, which is a very Japanese story-telling method. It's a very Western concept to explain everything and to force everything to perfectly fit together. Plus the four final boss fights are fucking amazing, and Taiga Saejima is the best character in the franchise, and nobody can tell me anyway.
hmm i dont think good, consistent writing is a western concept, japanese writers can definitely do it too as evidenced by a bunch of other games in this very franchise
@@waiflu No, I agree with you. I'm not saying that it's a western concept for writing to be consistent. I'm saying it's more of a western concept to think that most if not all writing has to be like that. Many Japanese film genres, especially the Yakuza Drama Genre, is very okay with saying "It Just Works Out Like That". Somethings are allowed to just be that way, while in western films, people expect everything to fit wonderfully, and people really don't like something to be explained away with coincidences, or just 'because'.
With the entire Yakuza series being released on Steam I am hoping to see more in-depth videos from you about them. Will be sending a donation to support my request!
I've been playing through the series, and watching your videos as I beat the games, so it's neat that you put this out now, the day after I started 5. I did exactly what you described at the start of the video, I played 0->Kiwami->Kiwami 2->remasters, and I won't lie, the transition to 3 was rough. Combined with the orphanage stuff, it was almost enough to make me skip straight to 4. I'm glad I didn't (in part thanks to watching the start of your video on 3, so thank you), but I definitely liked 4 more. I am definitely looking forward to getting back to the Dragon engine, but other than that, it hasn't really negatively impacted my experience with the franchise. I mean, 5 has Taiko no Tatsujin, how could it not be the best game in the series? (even though I'm only 3ish hours in so far)
OOOHHH YEAAH BOIS LET'S GOOOOOO! EDIT: I started with zero, then Kiwami1, then i whatched a 100% walkthrough of Yakuza 2, then it was Yakuza 4ps3(i actually played Ryu Ga Gotoku 3 before 4 but you know, language i don't understand), then Yakuza 3 ps3 and finally Yakuza 5 ps3, and shortly after Yakuza 6, now I'm currently playing Ishin. Fun Fact: The western boxart image for Yakuza 3 was taken from the cover art for the Japanese Manual, while in the manual the image was in black and white and kiryu was in the center of the image.
you asked, so: i started the franchise with 0, played kiwami 1 and 2, and up to 4 on rpcs3 (remasters aren't out on PC yet, 5 runs too poorly) 4 is my fave so far
@@Tehsnakerer one thing was definitely the expansion of kamurocho, it was great seeing every little detail of the city, the rooftops, the people living in the sewers with their own currency yakuza 4 also keeps gameplay more insteresting throughout than the other games (at least the ones i've played) by having more diverse movesets than others, including 0 in my opinion, since there a certain fighting style was always best to certain situations, whereas yakuza 4 forces you into situations which aren't ideal by just locking you into a certain playstyle (prison escape for example) kiryu definitely has the most satisfying moveset in all yakuza games (well, I haven't played 5 or 6, so there's that, but I doubt yakuza 6 is that good), and the challenge mode is nowhere near as frustrating as in 0 or kiwami, having some pretty cool challenges the plot is a very interesting mystery (yes, rubber bullets, it's not a good twist, but i don't mind it) that is constantly built up and hinted at, and you touch upon my favourite thing in the video - every character makes kamurocho feel completely different because of the circumstances they find themselves in, the kamurocho you see as saejima pursued by the police is a completely different beast from the kamurocho you see as a laidback loan shark or a detective uncovering the dirty secrets of the police force it also gave us machinegun kiss and get to the top and pure love in kamurocho and that automatically gives it a headstart, and on that note, the soundtrack in yakuza 4 is fantastic
I started the series incredibly recently with 0 and the remakes but the remastered PS3 titles haven't been too jarring to me. I always try to see the charm in the way older games are made and I can somehow appreciate jank. The Sayama character model at the start of 3 was probably the most jarring thing I've experienced so far
I recently finished Yakuza 4. I did enjoy it, but so far I quite like 5. But then I haven't played any of 5's other characters yet. 4 is also the second game I remembered to fight the Amons in.
Just wanna come here to give you those RUclips 'viewer participation' things that apparently the algorithm is still on about. Also to say that your videos are fantastic, and that I am completely on-board with having another game inbetween this and Y5. Like you said, burnout's a bitch.
Yakuza 0's translation also had some contemporary slang slip in, mostly in Majima's choices of insults. It's bit grating, but not gamebreaking, since it really often creeps into humour because of the rapid-fire pace at which humour changes. But yea, it's sort of funny they'd patch out an oopsie. As for coming in to the remasters from Kiwami 2 and Judgment, having gotten into the series with 0, currently playing through 3. Not that far in yet, but I do note that Kamurocho's less detailed than it was in 0, and the combat does feel less refined. Especially since I really dug the Dragon Engine combat in 6 and Kiwami 2, which felt smooth as butter to me (aside from 6 often chugging in presence of overlapping windows).
Honestly I just finished Kiwami 2 and it was easily my favorite so far, a big bright spot after Kiwami 1. Going into 3 I bounced right off and watched your video, and then I am about to do the same with 4 because I can't stand Saejima's gameplay. Just looking forward to getting into the more recent entries of the franchise.
Hey dude i saw your video about dead rising in my recommendation and i know its not the good video to ask that here but do we have any news about dead rising and capcom ?
after playing 0 and Kiwami 2, the hostess club stuff in this and 3 is AGONIZING. i don't know how to make a girl more refined when practically one application of lipstick will ruin the girls stats completely.
I don't really have a plan for the spin offs, it's not to say I won't do them, I've been sort of holding of incase of official translations, which is a big incase because we get a questionnaire that gauges/teases interest with every new release but never goes anywhere.
i started with 0 then played kiwami 1/2 and judgment and the fist of the north star game. i played the ps4 port of 3 and didint like it very much and got half way through 4 before getting bored, im sure ill go back to it eventually but judgment being so good made these older yakuza titles rough to play

hmm i dont think good, consistent writing is a western concept, japanese writers can definitely do it too as evidenced by a bunch of other games in this very franchise
Finally playing Yakuza game with greatest plot twist in history of video games, eh?
And just wait! Yakuza 5 is even slower!
With the entire Yakuza series being released on Steam I am hoping to see more in-depth videos from you about them. Will be sending a donation to support my request!
Still waiting for the thoughts on Alyx
Love the video though
(Glad to know me finally getting around to watch your Yakuza 3 video yesterday paid off)
An hour long video on just Akiyama's section? You son of a bitch, I'm in.
Thanks for replying, I am very bad at Taiko.
it’s happening
Yay...part 4
It’s here
hell yeah
OOOHHH YEAAH BOIS LET'S GOOOOOO!
EDIT: I started with zero, then Kiwami1, then i whatched a 100% walkthrough of Yakuza 2, then it was Yakuza 4ps3(i actually played Ryu Ga Gotoku 3 before 4 but you know, language i don't understand), then Yakuza 3 ps3 and finally Yakuza 5 ps3, and shortly after Yakuza 6, now I'm currently playing Ishin.
Fun Fact: The western boxart image for Yakuza 3 was taken from the cover art for the Japanese Manual, while in the manual the image was in black and white and kiryu was in the center of the image.
you asked, so: i started the franchise with 0, played kiwami 1 and 2, and up to 4 on rpcs3 (remasters aren't out on PC yet, 5 runs too poorly)
4 is my fave so far
Now that's interesting, what about it got it up to favourite?
@@Tehsnakerer one thing was definitely the expansion of kamurocho, it was great seeing every little detail of the city, the rooftops, the people living in the sewers with their own currency
yakuza 4 also keeps gameplay more insteresting throughout than the other games (at least the ones i've played) by having more diverse movesets than others, including 0 in my opinion, since there a certain fighting style was always best to certain situations, whereas yakuza 4 forces you into situations which aren't ideal by just locking you into a certain playstyle (prison escape for example)
kiryu definitely has the most satisfying moveset in all yakuza games (well, I haven't played 5 or 6, so there's that, but I doubt yakuza 6 is that good), and the challenge mode is nowhere near as frustrating as in 0 or kiwami, having some pretty cool challenges
the plot is a very interesting mystery (yes, rubber bullets, it's not a good twist, but i don't mind it) that is constantly built up and hinted at, and you touch upon my favourite thing in the video - every character makes kamurocho feel completely different because of the circumstances they find themselves in, the kamurocho you see as saejima pursued by the police is a completely different beast from the kamurocho you see as a laidback loan shark or a detective uncovering the dirty secrets of the police force
it also gave us machinegun kiss and get to the top and pure love in kamurocho and that automatically gives it a headstart, and on that note, the soundtrack in yakuza 4 is fantastic
A big tip if you play on PC is to add Reshade with shapering, HDR and some vibrance and it looks really similar to Yakuza 0/kiwami 1 😊
Honestly, if it wasn't for Super Chunk here, Akiyama would be just doing fuck all with all that Sky Crime money...
I love this game
fuck yes new video
Best character.
I was getting scared it wasn't coming.
Ah! Arai arrived.
If hostesses had green hair and makeup like Jolyne Cujoh I would maybe consider possibly going to hostesses club.
Is that Beautiful Morning from DR2 at 39:45???
Honestly I just finished Kiwami 2 and it was easily my favorite so far, a big bright spot after Kiwami 1. Going into 3 I bounced right off and watched your video, and then I am about to do the same with 4 because I can't stand Saejima's gameplay. Just looking forward to getting into the more recent entries of the franchise.
I’m listening to this while playing 0 on my xbone...already played 0 n both kiwami on my ps4
Hey dude i saw your video about dead rising in my recommendation and i know its not the good video to ask that here but do we have any news about dead rising and capcom ?
I'm not the one to ask, check a news outlet.
after playing 0 and Kiwami 2, the hostess club stuff in this and 3 is AGONIZING.
i don't know how to make a girl more refined when practically one application of lipstick will ruin the girls stats completely.
im gonna watch these i just need to play them first. i wonder if alot of others are in the same boat
Little question before starting to watch this video.. but do you plan on ever cover the weird spin off in feodal japan Yakuza ishin one day ?
I don't really have a plan for the spin offs, it's not to say I won't do them, I've been sort of holding of incase of official translations, which is a big incase because we get a questionnaire that gauges/teases interest with every new release but never goes anywhere.
Gosh darn it RUclips, tell me when people I care about upload new videos!
If this video in full will be this long, I’m worried on how long it’s gonna take to make a script for 5.
Are you spying on me? I just finished Akiyama's section yesterday (that is, first four chapters) can i safely watch this?
It's a bit spotty, there are mild, very quick but context free images from later in the game that may be spoilery, but nothing major
@@Tehsnakerer gotcha! Thanks for the heads up!
Akiyama always gave me spike from cowboy bebop vibes thats why he's my favorite playable character
They have the same VA
i started with 0 then played kiwami 1/2 and judgment and the fist of the north star game. i played the ps4 port of 3 and didint like it very much and got half way through 4 before getting bored, im sure ill go back to it eventually but judgment being so good made these older yakuza titles rough to play
46:28 makes the sub worth it.
What's the name of the song for the install?
For Faith
@@Tehsnakerer Was not expecting a reply, let alone from my favourite RUclipsr thank you and I cannot wait to hear how you feel about 6 and dead souls (I've heard fan reception is mixed or bad)
just wondering whats your opinion on yakuza 7 being a turn based rpg
I'm okay with it
