  • The 15 bladed Pentacon Orestor gets a lot of love online. It's called 'Bokeh Monster' because of the 15 blades, but is it really that good? In this video I compare two vintage 135mm lenses from the former German Democratic Republic side by side. Throughout this video the exact same lens and camera settings are used. The camera used is a full-frame Sony A7 iii.
    Filming location: Rotterdam, Erasmusbrug, Holland

    GDR lenses are by no way Soviet lenses. Many Soviet vintage lenses have been copies of German lenses, so it is more the other way round.

      Hello. I’m French and I didn’t understand what you wanted to do, but I think we had the same idea.
      I want to put the pentacon auto glasses in the pentacon 15 blades.
      Is that what you want to do?
      Have you started yet?
      Thank you

    The 6 blades is a lot nicer in my opinion. Mine is a Made in Japan, I can't get much info on this version.

    02:56sec ..oh jeah, the Oretsor (15 blades) is pretty much better. The proof: because the little ship with the yellow roof drives much, much faster 🤣🤣

    Yeah it looks like Pentacon wins for quality, but I prefer Orestor's bokeh for more blades. Id use Pentacon for quality and only portraits if the 5 blade bokeh isn't distracting for the composition and Orestor for only using its bokeh.

    Nice review about those two versions of Pentacon 135mm. I have 6 bladed (MC) version and I'm very happy with the results I've got with it. Bokeh is very nice also. Yesterday I bought Pentacon 200mm f4 (older version with 15 blades) and it looks and feels very nice. I need to test it these days on my crop sensor canon 700d.
    If you got chance you could make similar video like this one for Pentacon 200mm versions. It would be great. I heard that a lot of people say that older one (15 bladed that I've got) is better than MC 6 bladed version of 200mm lens. But maybe they are wrong like they were wrong about this 135mm 6 bladed lens that we saw it's better than 15 bladed version.

      @ohjajohh  2 года назад +1

      Thanks for your comment. I've never tried out any of the 200mm versions, so I can't make a video about it, but maybe one day :) I've also read many reviews of people saying the 15 bladed version of the 135 is better, but in my opinion the modern 6 bladed version has better results.

    nice comparison, allways wanted the old 18 bladed one but mayby I should get the GDR version instead. If you think these lenses feel like tanks, try the Carl Zeiss Jena 200mm and 300mm (also GDR made) they feel like cannon barrels @ 1.2kg / 2kg but the bokeh is spectacular so its worth carrying them around (most of the time atleast).

    I'm a bit behind with my video watching - spent 2 weeks without broadband so I've got some catching up to do!!! I expected both of these lenses to be good - I get why you don't totally love them but they still have charm and the footage you shot was beautiful. You can see the difference the multi coatings make on the newer lens. I guess the grease in the helecoid is a little dry on the Pentacon because it looked a bit tight - better not take that one out on a cold winter night otherwise it'll probably be impossible to focus. I love the night time docklands shots.

      Cheers, I reckon 2 weeks without broadband must feel weird, but back to basic maybe isn't so bad after all :) I actually already sold the 'electric' version, as I didn't plan on using it again. (My Takumar 135 is the lens of choice for 135mm) The 15 bladed version I will keep because it's more rare and valuable. I also read that because it's a bit soft, it's ideal for portraits, so maybe I'll try that one day.

      @@ohjajohh 2 weeks without broadband was very weird - I'd used up my mobile data allowance within days!!! I'd forgotten about your Takumar 135 - that one will always be the lens of choice.

    6 blades have better contrast and sharpness here. So what's all that commotion about with 15 blade lenses? Funny thing I just lost bidding on 15 blades Pentacon before coming here. I have the 6 blades version now and the original Orestor by Meyer Optik. So far I just used the 6 blades Pentacon and it's great with sharpness/contrast. Now my expectation about the Orestor by Meyer are not that high.

    • @ohjajohh
      @ohjajohh  2 года назад

      Yes, the cheaper 6 bladed version performs much better indeed. It was a real big letdown to me when I first saw the results of the 15 bladed version. The starbursts are nice though and in some occasions I like the round 'bokeh balls'. But overall I was disappointed after reading all the great reviews about it. Maybe people like to hype it, because it's more rare and thus drive the price up ;)

      @@ohjajohh Yeah, rarity must be the reason. Also some very well known youtube reviewer from the USA :) claims that all of the East German 50mm's the best are actually the most common and cheapest plasticy 1980's Pentacon 50mm/1.8 Multicoated Auto that came as standard with Practica SLR's and not the exotic zebras from C. Zeiss/Meyer etc.
