- To say that Dodge hit a home run with the 1968-1970 Charger would be a big understatement. The 1968-1970 Charger R/T proved that Dodge could not only build a desirable performance car but a true legend. The 1968-1970 Dodge Challenger R/T was that perfect mix of beautiful styling and limitless muscle car performance during its era, today it's more popular than ever.

In 69 My dad left the house in a Galaxy 500........and came back in a Killer new 69 Charger R/T SE with a Red body and Black vinyl top and those awesome stripes! I poured over that thing soaking it all in! The SOUND! That gas cap! The Huge 440 Magnum! Wood grain, 4 Speed, red striped tires...even the trunk mat smelled and looked cool! That first ride and the tires went up in smoke in 1 & 2, then barked into 3rd and we were flying! I have had 40 vehicles since then and NONE of them left an impression like that Baby since!

I always loved how they worked the rear window in with those beautiful wings along the back that define the chargers elegant styling much like the elegance of the fastback mustangs.Just plain beautiful.

I'm primarily a Ford man but this was one of the best styling exercises of the era.
We had the privilege and pleasure of owning a ‘68 RT. I agree with the statement of someone on here who called it the best looking car ever built. There was one thing we did to ours that I thought improved the appearance - we put larger size tires on the rear and two extra leaves in the rear springs which raked it a little. This added to the muscular look. I wish I had it back.

The interior styling of the '66-7s was very cool. The way the console went all the way to the back seat and folded down with it... so cool.
People did confuse them with the AMC Marlin though, and I think that's why the sales dropped.
The '68-70s are indeed the best looking Chargers ever made IMO.

The Dodge Charger 1968 - 1970 was absolutely stunning. No computer aided design in those days. Today's cars are boring with no character.

I had one of the 68 R/Ts. If you noticed the speedometer on the dashboard in the interior view ,
it shows 150, the needle would move well past that and point nearly straight down to the odometer.
And how do you know this? Yours was factory stock? You took up past 150 mph?
From, Bullitt, the Dukes of Hazzard all the way up to The Fast and The Furious, the Charger is a legend to reckon.
Don't forget the Blue & Black 1968 Dodge Charger from the 1983 film "Christine". That movie helped make this car a legend too!

The Charger was the best looking muscle car every made and there is no car its based off of. Most muscle cars where upgraded from another model like the Malibu/Chevelle, Plymouth Satellite/Roadrunner and so on. I just wish they would stock wrecking them in movies. That goes for all muscle and classic cars.

What a great and informative video. Thank you. As a one time owner of a '69, i appreciate the numbers for that year. Heck, i paid $750 for my 383 Mag but a friend bought an R/T for $350!!! Those were the late ''70 gas crunch days. Charger convertible ?. Never ever crossed my mind
Great installment!!! Thanks for posting. In '77 i bought a semi ratty '69 with a 383 Magnum, 727 trans and a sure grip for $750. Thought i got a great deal. A few months later, a friend found an R/T in better shape than mine from a family friend. Got it for $350 !! Those were the days !!

Nice video my favorite is the 68 not that 69 or 70s didn't have a cool Factor or weren't true muscle cars but the 68 Grill and round tail lights to me is the best looking of all Chargers although I really do like a 66 in all black and chrome funny thing is in high school my girlfriend had a yellow 66 that to be honest I didn't appreciate I called it the banana boat her her mom her dad and her brother all had 66 Chargers her dad somehow found one for all of them they were 66 charger nuts a few years back I guess about eight years ago now I went back up to where I grew up she's a teacher in elementary school and she still has that car it's like a family thing I respect that
No matter how much that I like the 1966-'70 Charger, I love the Coronet! Especially the 1968-'70 had less front overhang and it weighed less and had more performance models! The 1968 Chargers reccessed grille and rear window created too much resistance at NASCAR speeds! Thus came the 1969 Charger 500 and then, the Daytona to compete against the Ford Torino and Telledaga and especially the Mercury montego and Cyclone Spoiler! The 1966 Charger was actually the fastest and most unstable car in NASCAR until they were allowed to use the small rear spoiler! And then, Richard Petty pulled out a couple of tricks and won in 1967! Too bad that cars, racing and music isn't what it used to be!

My sentiment exactly, besides far be for me to brag, but, coming out of The Royal Albert Hall at the end of The Seekers 25th Reunion Concert in London in the 90s, I met ''Dirty Mary'' Susan George was there at the concert too and was very gracious and had my picture taken with her. She was as beautiful as ever. If only I could own that 69 Charger.

This was the beginning of the 'Coke bottle' shape that really sold the Chargers and with the front grill a lot of people found liked the sexy body style more than previous cars. I think that I spent 30+ minutes walking around the first one I saw....beautiful!

Way back in 1968 (or maybe late 1967?), my father bought my mother a new car. Which car did she choose? A new 1968 Dodge Charger R/T with the 440 Magnum engine. (3 speed automatic. Silver with black vinyl top.) She said she wanted something "a little sporty" after having two previous Ford Thunderbirds (a '62 and a '65). During my senior year in high school, way back in 1972-73, my parents gave the '68 Charger to me. A fun car! 😎

Personally, I like the '66-'67 Chargers. Mainly because of the rear window and roof lining.

Mopar made the best muscle cars back then. No other car company could compete with the Dodge Charger, Challenger, and Super Bee, and the Plymouth Roadrunner, GTX, and Barracuda, especially the 1970-1974 'Cuda. Then there was the Plymouth Duster and Dodge Demon, which blew away the Chevy Nova and Ford Maverick. Mopar not only knew how to style cars, they also had some of the best engines, the 340, 383, 440 Max Wedge, and of course the mighty 426 Hemi.

Look up the group 19 package..! Dual Quads and an upgraded Cam from the Factory. A thing you already mentioned, kind of was the Go-Pack Option and the Lighting Option.
I easily stuck a 71 401 in my 1964 Ramble American 440. Bolted up an oversized Swaybar for a 71 Gremlin and Eat all Comers at the Freemont Drag Strip...
Look up the car called Magic... It was a SC-Rambler. Not mine. However I did buy his Possi Rear End and Short Shift Close Ratio 4 Speed.
I Loved the looks on Driver's Faces when the little Red Body White Top Rambler just walked away from them. Many times I ran away from them at the Track and especially on the Twisties. Big Cars with Big Engines usually only go straight...

Very good viedo I owned a 68 hemi rt charger in 1970 till it was stolen in homestead fl. Now 2004 a viper truck. Still nothing as cool as the charger.

It is my dream to have a black '69 R/T with a red stripe and Hemi engine. SE optional. If I can't find that year, then I'll look for '68 or' 70 and try to match. Worst case scenario, I'll get a Coronet. Those big, slick Chargers are so beautiful (even though aerodynamically not so well). Modern ones may be fast, but they suck in terms of design and never have the raw power the classics had. Strange he never said about the 500...
Love Mopars, and this video was well thought out. At the 7 minute mark, I thought, they never offered 440 6-PAK with air conditioning. Then I noticed the aircleaner was trimmed and after market valve covers. I don't think I have heard of Black Lake. I'm in Red Deer, Alberta. CAMA holds a big Mopar meet each year. Sadly it's getting over run by new cars.

I just laid eyes on one of the 29 1970 R/T SE 440 6pack 4-speed cars under restoration by the owner. It was one of the Plum Crazy cars and I actually got emotional when checking it out. Just randomly going to buy tires for my Camaro and a Unichorn presents itself. Stumbled across a white on white '70 Super Bee 440 4-speed parked by a '59 Imperial, a Gran Torino GT, a 62 'Vette, and numerous other 'Vettes that were all together and in really nice shape sitting in the back of an old dealership. The Bee got me geeked out. Pistol Grip, white/white and a stripe delete car. I nearly tripled myself.
No nonsense they left nothing on the table. What a car.

Sam Harris Hi Sam!, the 67 hemi charger 4 speed. Dodge built only 19 units. Lonnie Shelton, Pampa,TX pulled one out of Peru in 2006. (Muscle car review sept 2007)
Michael M Thank you! It's just confusing because there were so many appearance packages/engine choices/colors of these older cars. I really wonder if there are still any good gems sitting in barns, untouched. As the years continue on, the likelihood decreases I'm sure. I bet many of the classics sadly went to the junk yards in the 80s. Do you have a muscle car yourself?
Sam Harris Your rigth it can be a little confusing, but all mopar's with a hemi are the rarest. I work at Rene Delisle garage in Black-Lake Canada, and he's hemi charger is amazing. And yes it's still possible for a good barn fine. Nick's garage pulled out this year a T/A challenger. My muscle car is first gen charger. Are you looking for charger?

You're forgetting that this included the 68 models too. So they were taking only a fraction of roughly 180,000 cars.

Chrysler sold the Charger in Australia too from 1971-1978, until Chrysler left the Aust market in 1981. They were different and smaller than the US models, only 2 door coupes, built in Australia but had very similar styling. They were branded as the Chrysler Charger or Chrysler Valiant Charger. They had smaller engines too, some had a straight 6, 265 hemi engine but they offered some V8's 318 cu, 340 cu and 360cu.
It was a very nice car.

Yeah, remember the 1979-1987 Chargers 2.2L's? They were just FWD Omni Hatchback's with the charger nameplate stamped on it. I still thought they were cool looking cars, just did not like the charger nameplate being used on those cars.
Raymond Berlin III they were dark days for the American car manufacturers. Thank God there are some decent models coming out from them now even if it’s just a few.

70 is the best
I never owned a Charger but I did own a few Mopars in my day. The 1970 Plymouth Fury 111 that I owned could and did run with any and all of the other Mopars of the day. It had everything that the Charger and the Roadrunners had but it could also cost an arm and a leg cheaper especially the insurance costs. It didn't have a sports car body per say but it did look very good and I liked it so much I never had a desire to own any of the Mopar sports cars. The 1970 Fury I had I think was even lighter than the fully dressed out Chargers and Roadrunners. It was a very lightweight car for the size. It had power front disc brakes, air conditioning that worked, bucket seats, etc. etc. Go Fury!

when i was in drivers ed in socal in 71..our high school had this generation charger as it driver ed cars ..albeit with a 318 engine
the next kid after me in our family was stoked the next year after seeing me drive them...only to see the school replace them with 4 door six banger coronets...lol
There was a concept 68 charger that was a convertible and also a rare 68 charger 500 (fastback) concept car. I've always wondered what happened to these cars.
There's a guy with a 68 in the town where I live, it just sits in his parking lot at his business, rotting away. I ask him about once a year if I can buy it, only to be told "sorry, not for sale, it's gonna be restored one day". It's been sitting there for around 10 years, and that's only the time I've known about it, could be 20+
We need to know the wheels names... that 5 spoke metal machine worked with black core at 8:05. My father had Charger R/Ts, with those wheels. Is.it.Magnum.500 correct?
Couldn't stand all the chrome on the nose and across the grill. Still one of all the all time great styles.
I had its Cousin car. 69' Ply Road Runner. I almost bought a 69 Charger in the mid 70s right out of HS. It was a 383 but it had single exhaust 2bbl carb. It was the non performance big block Charger. It drove nice but the performance I wanted was lacking. Charger also had the performance 383 but that wasn't one of them. I think that one was like 290hp. the perf. 383 was 335 HP and over 400 ft Lbs Tq. And yes you could easily tell the difference in the power of the 2.

My 1st car was a pre-owned '69 2-Door Coronet, the base car for the '69 Charger. Bought it June 1972 for $1,200 Cash, my entire piggy bank savings, when I was 20. Went to The University of Texas at Austin in Sept 1972 (transferring from Junior College). Drove it 2-1/2 years, put 85,000 miles on it with no mechanical issues and sold it on April 1st, 1975 for $850.
Took delivery the same day on my 1st new car, a 1975 Chevrolet Corvette T-Top loaded for $8,300 TT&L.
Those were the days when our incomes were not eroded yet and the USA middle class had peaked in earning power! Nixon's Open Door to China in 1973 began the state out incomes are in now.
Another 10-years and USA middle class won't be able to afford cars anymore like most places in the world.
The Leftist Socialists/Communists will then be happy.
Although rust prone the torsion suspension at top speed was a stable ride. They took the Jag E-type suspension as their model. Too bad they didn't have the limited slip differential to compliment the handling.
I was driving my '72 Duster when the passenger side torsion bar mount let go. BANG! Felt a smack on the floorboard and the right front lost compliance.

The problem with the 1966-67 was the fastback roof line. It simply does not work well in large cars, the AMC Marlin suffered from this as well. The 1968 design brought wasp waist styling similar to many of the century series fighter jets of the sixties. It was know as the area rule which, in jet fighters, cut trans sonic drag. Also looked cool.
In1984my brother passed on a chance to buy a 1970 440 F5 Blue 4-speed Charger RT and bought a 1973 Mach 1 Mustang instead, he made a BIG Mistake.
It is the opposite of boxy styling it was super curvy.

I have a 69 RT SE 440-4 3.23 AT. Quick and classy. I have a 74 Charger Rallye 440. The 69 had F70/14s on 6 inch wheels. The 74 has G60/15s on 7 inch wheels with a rear stabilizer bar new for 72. The 74 is faster out of the hole than the 69 due to 3.55 gearing and better grip. The 74 will run rings around it handling wise.
440-4 was 375 hp GROSS but only 305 HP net......a 2022 5.7 V8 is 375 hp NET......those old cars are over rated in HP......slow..all noise.

Alex Holub Absolutely. Could not agree more. I was just thinking about that. I always thought that in reality, today's Charger is a 4 door Coronet. Just like the cop cars from the 1970. That to me at least is more credible and worthy of the Badge.
Yea but they have different levels of the charger the v6,rt,rt scatpack,hellcat i mean which one would u go for you got a 5.7,6.4,6.1 and the v6 take your pick maybe in this day n age it wouldnt have sold if it was a 2 door everyone wants 4 doors the challenger more suits today market for 2 door cars
