This theme song is so good that it always brings a tear to my eye...
One of the all time greats!
Same here
Damn Skippy it does
me too
WOW! This is an excellent tutorial! Being able to finally learn how to play this song at the age of 50 actually brought some happy tears to my eyes, and thank you also for the Dork Segment on the theory. ☺
You're very welcome! Good luck!
I’m currently re-watching every episode of Cheers and even when I’m watching 3 or 4 episodes in a row, I can’t bring myself to skip the intro even once. One of the all time TV theme classics. I look forward to learning to play it in the AM with the help of this video.
You can do it!
@KorbyLenker Thanks. I can't tell what you're playing at around 8:00.
You seem to be toggling your thumb and 2 other notes I guess.
I don't understand.
You're a good teacher. Edit: Can I like this video twice? You have a gift, and I'm not even referring to piano. You are so good at teaching.
And after subscribing and checking your other stuff, found out your Nashville talent. TN here too. Makes it cooler rooting for local talent.
man i appreciate this. thanks for taking the time to watch. Glad it was helpful brother
Thanks so much for sharing this. I can't wait to learn it. I dig how you just got right into the tutorial without talking for three minutes like so many teachers do. The only thing that could have made it better is if you opened with a demo of the full song. Thanks again for uploading this. Cheers.
Hey man here it is! ruclips.net/video/vZTF4LNKWz0/видео.html&ab_channel=KorbyLenker
@@KorbyLenker yes sir I found that one after watching this one. It’s the best version out there. All the others are the kind where the right hand plays the vocal melody. That’s such a pet peeve of mine. Thanks again.
best tutorial on this song I've come across, thanks!
Awesome!
I learned this song a couple of decades ago. It's nice to see that I have been playing the right keys all along. Sounds great! Keep up the good work.
Awesome Bob and way to hold on to all those notes all these years!
@@KorbyLenker And the beer. Cheers 🍺
You are such a great teacher! I have been loving all your posts on Patreon (they so often make me laugh, give me company in sadness or cheer me up). And now I'm so thrilled to learn this song (that nails what we all feel in even the most banal day to day interactions with each other--interactions we are currently robbed of...). And you have taught it the way it really sounds in my ear. People are always posting or playing "fake book" kinds of chords to familiar songs that kind of sound like the original but they dumb it down--not because it's too hard to teach but because they don't take the time to really listen to the original and catch a few touches of complexity. It helps me as a composer and performer to learn the little nuances of what the songs I love are really doing musically. I learn a ton. So I really appreciated your taking the time to figure this song out and sharing it with us. AND going through the music theory at the end of the song. Thank you so much! I'm already annoying my family by playing it over and over again. :-)
Thanks Katie! Makes me happy
Gave me shivers. Your voice is beautiful man. I too loved this song as a kid. I used to beg my parents to stay up late enough to hear the opening song. I even recorded it on a mini cassette recorder I got from a garage sale, just so I could replay it to myself. Just a song I have always loved. My daughter is now learning clarinet. I play piano, and I told her I will learn this if she learns the clarinet part. Would be the joy of my life. 🙂 Thank you for this. I subscribed. I need you to teach me more. Elton John please!!! 😉
So great! I know what you mean. This song is pure nostalgia to a person of a certain generation. Clarinet was all over that show I remember. Hope you guys get to play it together!
Thanks! I'll report back! 🙂
Brilliant stuff, you're an excellent teacher! I'm learning this during lockdown in the UK. Heres looking forward to the day we can meet our friends in the pub again. Cheers :)
My sentiments exactly. So glad it was helpful!
Just found this and find the tutorial the best I've seen. Korby you are an awesome teacher. I am easily able to follow along with you as you patiently go over the chords and notes.
Thanks so much for this.
Man I'm so glad it was helpful!
Thanks for the tutorial! I learned this song last week from it. It's like...Bob Ross teaches piano lol. The trickiest part for me was the quick segue to "the" iconic chord. Thank you!
HIgh compliment! Maybe a tree goes there
This is the most wonderfully accessible tutorial I’ve ever seen. A natural teacher with such enthusiasm for music and it’s intricate structure.
Thank you so much for doing this.
I never thought I’d be able to play such a complex song, but you’ve made it possible.
Wish you a lifetime of health and happiness from Scotland 🏴
Hey man congrats on gettin this one in your hands! So fun to play and pure nostalgia..
You are teaching an old dog (68). New tricks! Grazie mille!
I am genuinely really happy to hear this! Keep up the good work!
I’m so deep into this lesson...a few hours of watch time...right there with you...the eyebrow lift right before “were not there yet”...I’m dying...hands down the most fun I’ve ever had w a piano lesson. (In my 6 months of playing)...You’ve told me I’m doing great like 52 times!!!....Thanks for this!!!! I should have it down in a few weeks. Great teacher!!
Hey this make me so happy! I'm glad you're makin progress. You'll have down in no time!!
Now I just need a piano!
always loved this song - it's always moving to hear and very satisfying to play
You’re an amazing teacher honestly. I as a novice was able to jump in with you at times and really feel what i was supposed to be getting. I’m saving this for tomorrow to keep working, but i intend to get this song down entirely! 🙂 thank you so much keep at these!!!
I'm so glad to hear that! you're gonna get it in no time.
If your hand is too small to play an arpreggio (like mine), remove the last (lowest) note in the arpreggio. D-F-B flat-D becomes F-B flat-D. It works and sounds pretty similar. Try it.
Have a very nice day to whoever is reading this.
great tip!
Yes! Just started to binge this show with my dad, so good. Thank you for the concise tutorial!
jealous! Such a good show.
You're the best, Korby. Love the dry humor. Please keep producing these videos! Bought my first keyboard in January and I value your inspiration.
I'll do my best my friend! Keep up the good work!
Learning this song takes everything you've got
dont i know it
This is the best, fantastic player and singer, but a great teacher too. Really happy ive found this, im 43, and bought a piano when we were forced into a second lockdown(UK), to stop me going insane.
This video has taught me loads. Really appreciate you naming the keys of each chords because i have those funny letter stickers on my keys, and it really helps.
If i was aloud to get lessons i would, but we're not aloud to do anything, so i loving these videos.
Ive subscribed and im thinking of songs i would love you to do.
Thank you so much.
man thank you, so glad this helped you in your journey!
I do a weekly livestream here on this channel - playing songs on a couple different instruments every Wednesday at 9p central time (-6 gmt) which is a little late where you are but I do archive the shows. Gonna start doing a once a month on Sunday mornings for the Europe contigency. Best wishes and continued success and thanks again for taking the time to write!
Wow!... I learned the Cheers theme song on piano a few years ago which does sound good but always knew it was missing that little something... Man did you ever just make it that one notch better!! Thank you so much Korby, you're awesome!!
Here to help! Thanks for checking it out!
Shall try in when I wake up. Thanks
So shall I.
Wow, what a wonderful teacher! Thank you for sharing your talent with us. You're just outstanding. Cheers!

This is so beautiful! Best soundtrack song forever. Thanks man.
Thanks Ray!
Love this song and the old cheers, and glad I have found this. This is awesome. Thankyou.
You are welcome!
I just learned this entire piano theme in a few hours thanks to you. The tutorial was superb and clear as day. Thank you again for the inspiration. If we were come across each other please have the first round of beer on me, I know a great bar where everybody knows your name...
dude awesome! glad you got it down! and looking forward to that beer ;)
I love your "dorks can know..." comment about explaining the theory. Soooo funny. I'm a dork and totally dig the theory. Helps a lot.

Bravo Korby! I agree with the other posters about your teaching skills. Very well done!
Hey thanks!
I literally LOL’d at “we’re not there yet”… this song is so full of moments that bring joy, which sums up Cheers overall. As an occasional hacker of the ivories thank you so much; I can’t wait to give this a go!
sidebar: I introduced my wife to the show recently (she knew - and loved - Frasier, so that was my “way in”). Some of the fashion is of its time, but the show itself has aged beautifully and is still both funny and relevant. And, thanks to the prescient decision to record on film, the HD presentation looks great even in 2024.
Thanks for the review! I agree, Cheers has aged beautifully -- i credit the characters. Relateable and well-drawn. So much fun. Thanks for watching and I'm glad you enjoyed!
Omg the best tutorial on you tube for this song. I know I’m late but hey- I’m learning how to play without reading notes. Love this theme song and love the way you teach. Thank you so much for sharing . Brings so much childhood memories for me .
So glad you got something out of it!
Wow! Thank you so much for this!
Really great tutorial Korby, you got the pace just right. Always meant to get round to learning this song and was not disappointed, so many good memories. Will check out your work. Big thank you for making this song so easy.
My pleasure Stuart. thanks for taking the time to watch!
Beautiful! Thank you Mr. Lenker.
Thanks for watching my friend!
I randomly discovered you while looking for piano tutorials and I must say, this video is amazing! You're such a fun and engaging teacher. Breaking the song down, talking through it and even offering some of your own reflections on the tricks and intent of the songwriter. And the follow up video where you play the whole thing is just *chef's kiss*. This lesson has given me the confidence that I can learn this song and I'm really looking forward to seeing more of your content in the future!
thanks man! Really glad you found this helpful! You're gonna get it in no time.
@@KorbyLenker by way of a little update... last night, and after returning from a fairly emotional two week trip to see old friends, I decided to finally sit down and learn this. I see I've reached the "crying at the piano while playing 80s sitcom theme tunes" stage of my life, haha. And thanks for your part in that, it's not at all unpleasant. Honestly, I think this is the fastest I've ever picked up a song... I'm less than 24 hours in and I feel like I'm playing some parts quite convincingly already. Transitioning perfectly between sections is still an issue, but I just have to get the muscle memory down.
I know it's not true to the original, but I've added a grace into G in that E-flat chord on "...knows your NAME... and they're always glad you..." and also on the F chord at the beginning of the walk up to A. I like it though, I think the bluesy light-heartedness it adds changes the tone very slightly and reminds me a lot of spending time with old friends: like you're feeling the years rushing by, but you're putting that to the back of your mind for a while; for now, you're having a good time and letting your hair down a bit (what's left of it).
Anyway, I'm having an absolute blast learning this and would like to echo everything I said a year ago...
Superb instruction on this fun melody. Thanks.
Glad to help my friend.
THANK YOU Korby! THANK YOU!
you are welcome!
Yesss! Thanks for this. Love your style of teaching 🤗
Thanks pal. Glad it helped!!
was always intimidated by this one but the way you break it down makes it really simple. thank you so much for this video!

Glad to hear it Mr Scoony
Love this song, reminds me of being a little boy staying at my nannas gaff when my mum worked nights
i know! quite possibly the most sentimental song you could listen to if you grew up in the 80s.
Yes agreed, thanks for the upload, gonna grab me a cheap keyboard so that I can play this👍
@@biblybims9868 nice!!
Astonishing sounds. Thank you for posting this wonderful piece. As agreed with everyone, it's the best. This is the first time where I'll try learning a piece without sheet music. It's going to be tough, but it's definitely worth it if it can sound anything like you. Thanks again.
You got this!!
Nice one Korby, a lesson with a smile, just what we need at the moment.
My pleasure Tony thanks for watching :)
Such a great tutorial. So clear. So helpful. Thank you so much
My pleasure. Happy playing!
At one point I had learned the entire song using basic chord shapes, and mostly by ear. I had stopped playing this song for many years and had forgotten it. The other day, while fooling around on the keyboard I stumbled on the the opening chord(That iconic Bb). Thank you so much for making the fun of relearning this tune so easy! This was an awesome supplement that I needed, and I love the in-depth music theory lesson at the end! "Cheers!"(Bad pun)
So glad it was helpful!
Thank you sir. I've wanted to play this since I was a kid. Decided to teach myself piano a few years ago. I feel accomplished play this little ditty.
Awesome man. Nice work
Dude, your love of this song is so enjoyably obvious during this tutorial. Can't wait to learn this from you this weekend.
Awesome man have a blast!
Thanks for putting this up! I just learned it tonight. I needed something homey and cozy. From an opera singer and piano teacher in San Diego. ❤
Fantastic!
Couldn’t be any better than this. Perfect.

This makes me so happy! thanks Zedania
Been watching this all night, again this morning. Almost there! Every time I hear you say, "you're doing great", in my head I hear Bugs Bunny saying "This guy don't know me very well, do he?"
haha but i bet you're gettin there
@@KorbyLenker Definitely am. You a great teacher. Especially the segment for theory nerds! Started Weds night. Right hand is 100%, working on left. For me I noticed when playing the Fm/C with the Ab left, for me Im more comfortable tapping that mid-C with my left thumb, left middle finger on Ab. Am I wrong to get used to doing improperly? BTW, I'm a guitarist primarily (you know us, not too bright!) 😉 Also, I'd pay for a tutorial for "Those were the daaaayyyys!"

Well done!!!! Thank you!!! Great tutorial!!!
You're welcome!
Man, you're the best guy for this Cheers tutorial! You fit the mold. And you get it! For example what you said at 6:17. That the chord change makes you feel "sad for a second". Wow, genius way to describe it. And I totally agree with the memories too.
In fact, I have a special memory of the song. Back in '92 when my wife and I were on our honeymoon at Epcot, I'll never forget us walking through a mezzanine and a nice gentleman was playing Cheers on piano. What an impression that made on me then! I was like wow, he's playing Cheers! I think about that every time I hear the song.
So anyway, thanks for your tutorial. I'm gonna surprise my family by learning it in the coming days.
And now you'll be the second nice gentleman I think about when, this time, I PLAY the song. 😄
Thats sweet how a personal memory comes back back when you hear a piece of music. Magic.
