- The Informer is a Crime Scene Cleaner who cleans up multiple homicides per week and has been called to shootings, stabbings, machete attacks and meth labs.
She is on call 24 hours a day six days a week and says there’s no job that gets the adrenaline going like this one.
One of her first shocking experiences was of a woman who fell and died from intense head trauma. Once she started decomposing, her cat started eating some of her brains which then also killed the cat from all the bacteria - despite there being plenty of cat food left over in the bowl. She just can’t ever look at cats the same way.
The Informer says the hardest part of the job is dealing with survivors at the scene without causing secondary trauma. She once had to deal with the wife of a man who had shot himself. He had spent all his savings fixing up his house and then when the house flooded, it had just pushed him over.
The Informer also clears out hoarder homes that are equally shocking. She once cleaned an upscale apartment where the man had been cooking meth and shooting porn. On another occasion, she cleaned a serial killer’s house and whilst going through each room - there were cameras facing every direction that made her feel uneasy.
In reflection, the Informer says this job makes her see the world differently, “you’d think this job would make you more of an empathetic person, but it doesn’t, it just desensitizes you”.

This person signed up for it. There is no empathy if you decided to sign up for something and then it messed you up mentally. You think those images just leave his head?
This is something I can relate to hard as a nurse- one of my professors even specifically stressed that vicarious trauma (ie secondary trauma from caring for the victims) is real and it can eat you alive. Jobs like these can expose you to some truly horrific things on a daily basis, but the job still needs to be done regardless. Someone's gotta do the work- but just like you can't pour from an empty glass, you can't take care of others if you don't care for yourself.

It's incredible to me that we walk past physcopaths, mass-drug dealers and murderes everyday and don't suspect a thing. Huge big-ups to these crime scene cleaners as it must sometimes be an extremely streantious strain mentally to walk into these places.
I was telling somebody a few days ago that almost every prolific serial killer that we all at least know about, are completely unassuming, look at Dahmer, Bundy, even Gacy. A lot of the population, even myself if we see a person on the street that looks "threatening ", those people are usually never the really sick individuals we would expect them to be just at a glance.
Most of them are members of upper management of companies.

I hope this person is able to access counseling or therapy. You shouldn't have to deal with this stuff alone, even if it is your job.
It's a job but not in the traditional sense. Most don't have a "boss." They're contractors so any therapy etc is out of their own pocket/insurance if that makes sense. The benefits that come with a traditional job aren't related here, unless they've set up their own company to that level.
What time is it, when the Counselor/Therapist says: " I can assist you, if you can afford CINNAMON Wage." Time to find a new Counselor/Therapist. Watch your step, on your way out.

Listening to this guy speak about his experiences is so deeply disturbing and sends chills down my spine. Doing what this guy does would be one of the worst jobs in the world.

Just googled crime scene cleaner yearly salary. It’s saying 30-34k. I can’t put into words how fucking unreal that is, and that people willingly do it every day. I’d go without a LOT of things if that was the only job available to me.

I remember in a really messed up event back in 2015, a friend of mine died of a self inflicted gunshot wound, her husband at the time couldn't afford any cleanup for the scene, so I volunteered.
It's something I'll never forget, of course the coroner already took her body away but the bathroom was full of death.
I'll never forget the day I picked up my friends brain matter.... it's not something I think I'd ever be able to do again

@@Anakaraya yeah I've discussed it during therapy, it was terrible, it was weird because in the moment cleaning it up its like the act of that wasn't sinking into my reality until later after I finished and cried in the shower at my home.
I've sense moved away and rarely ever think of her, I do miss her a lot.

You have my sympathies. I spent the week before Christmas 2003 cleaning up my husband, packing our lives into boxes and shrieking between bouts of shock. I've never forgiven him for that.
When he was talking about scrubbing the brain off the floor, it reminded me of my aunt who died in her house while giving birth on her own. There were pieces of meat, congealed blood, urine, even her nails on the floor. Some things you just can't unsee.. i was just 19 at that time but i can still remember every detail; the feelings, even the smell of the place.
Good reason never to leave a pregnant woman on her own.

@@Michael-Archonaeus she was only 5 months pregnant, and my uncle was working as a truck driver. It wasn't really a "normal" situation, the investigation led to even more questions than answers.

If any of us were stranded with no food and just a dead person. Well..... you can guess, right?
This reminds me of the first and only shooting call I did as an EMT. The victim had half of their head and face blown off, with a shotgun blast at less than 10 feet. Fortunately, and also unfortunately, the victim survived, but was left horribly disfigured. After that, I can testify with certainty that the human brain is indeed pink. That was over 15 years ago, and even thinking about it now still bothers me.
What you see on TV or even here on YouPoop, or even reading the run sheet, doesn't even compare to the terror and disbelief that you feel when you're in the thick of it while having to maintain your composure. It entirely changes your perspective on the world, and makes you resentful of the people around you who are blissfully unaware of the carnage that you've been forced to bear witness to. It takes a special kind of soul to be able to absorb all of that horror, trauma, and pain into themselves; to venture into the darkness that is human nature and find their way back to the light.
The Informer is a good soul, and I believe God is with him. I only hope that he will not lose his way.
"Fortunately and unfortunately" just about sums it up
One of my best friends is an EMT firefighter and he's witnessed some true carnage, like decapitations, dead babies, etc. I can't help but think about what you said about being resentful to those blissfully unaware because I've thought about that from my perspective of being spared from those horrors. I spoke to my friend last week and his entire demeanor was much more stoic and serious. I hope I get to see him soon and give him a big hug. Our other friends I don't think know how truly fucked up his job can really be, and I am one of the only people hes told some of these stories to.

From a crime/accident/suicide scene containment- and trauma-counsellor: you guys are incredible, I can't even imagine doing your job. In my job, we obviously call our local CSC business all the time and they're amazing. Thank you for doing the things no victim's loved ones (or anyone, you included) ever should have to

Here’s something. That rapper that was killed posting pics on ig in the dead persons blood in his apartment. Only reason he was able to do so was because he didn’t hire a cleanup crew and the city didn’t take care of it even though he was a victim in that situation.
This is horrific. Every crime scene cleaner should have a mental health counsellor provided to them. They are doing an amazing job in a horrible world. They deserve to be treated better.

Honestly I felt every word he said. I’m a funeral director and embalmer and I think this job made me get extreme anxiety. I think of the world as a danger and how you can easily be here one day and gone the next. Really fks with your mental health seeing everything you see daily and having to be there to carry the weight of people grieving while not being able to care for your own mental health and missing so much time away from the ones you care about most. I too go on call before crime scene cleanup comes so I see first hand the travesties you can only imagine them to be or that you see in movies. I sometimes wonder why I got myself into this career and I feel like I fkd myself over. I will never be able to see the world through nieve eyes. 🤢
even with pitch shifting and wearing a mask, it's pretty easy to tell it's a female speaking, also in the description it describes the informer as she. not that it really matters since they're trying to hide the identity. i think it's bizarre they are hiding the identity if it's actually a legal job. but i can see how someone would want to hide their real face talking about some things
I resonated with what you wrote. I'm a grief trauma mental health counselor. It's very difficult we are there to comfort & emotionally support people at their worst to the detriment of our own mental health . It can be very isolating, depressing, and draining. It'd be great to shed a light on the challenges of being a funeral director/embalmer.

I know a real life CSI. She always got a laugh out of people who would watch the show and think "hey, this is cool!" and then they see the reality of what the job really entails. She explained some of the aspects of the job that are anything but clean.

@@erossinema8797I have a friend who does body removal before crime scene/death cleanups come in, for southeast Michigan. He has some wild stories, one time it was a SEVERELY obese person, heavily decomposed and their leg fell off when they picked up the body!!

This is a perfect description. I finally start to understand only a little what these cleaners are going through. They have all my respect, even when I can't imagine the things they have seen

Always have massive respect to people who have to clean these kind of messes. I don't think anyone on this planet could be prepared for this kind of job.
I used to work in a residential facility for seniors. An old nice lady who was obviously drunk called me to ask if I could talk with her. I was working the night shift and I had nothing to do so I said yes. We chatted a bit, then she told me about her husband who shot himself in the basement while she was in their house, and she had to clean everything by herself. I will never forget how I felt when she said that she had to pick up pieces of her husband's skull and brain all by herself.
I wish she could have had some help from someone :/

I'm always curious and I want to learn, but these topics are particularly horrifying. I can't imagine how hard it must be. Crime scene cleaners should also get therapy and other support systems. This is scary and it's heartbreaking. "I thought I would get better at dealing with surviving victims, but I never get any better. I stay the same." I hope she gets some sort of help and support to help her and give her a better life.
Wow. Thank you Vice for giving this woman a platform to talk about her career as a crime scene cleaner. My concern for people who do this type of work is always their mental health. I hope she have healthy ways to decompress and also, sees a counselor/therapist at least once every month.

I've seen horrible, gut-wrenching, unbelievable things and what I noticed about how the things I've experienced affected me is that i respect death now. I understand how real it is. Most people are so detached from it. I also respect the value of all life now, not just human. I learned empathy.

Nearly the entire world is so up its own ass with make believe problems that it's not a surprise to me that I couldn't empathize with anyone in it. I still sometimes have difficulty empathizing with people when I look at what people think are "real problems" in the US but my past experiences help me with that. Regardless, believe what you want. Opinions are like assh0les, everyone's got one. Including you, me and the brain cleaner.

I was before and still am to a degree. When I experienced these things, it made me appreciate the people I had left. You might not notice at first, but their absence becomes very real.

People assume that crime scene cleaners or morticians are weird or psychotic. Many of them had bad experiences with someone passing and want to make sure other people don’t experience it.
Exactly how I feel as a firefighter, I had a friend shot next door , and my dad overdosed , I wanna have the chance to maybe save someone next time

it is a woman with a voice changer
One of my neighbors died a few years back. I was just getting home and had to walk past her apartment when they were pulling her body out through the front door. They just plopped her down on the ground and she slumped forward like a sack of flour while they got the stretcher ready. She was in a body bag, so I didn't see any gore or anything, but just seeing my lifeless neighbor being tossed around like that messed me up for several weeks. I can't imagine what these people must go through emotionally after seeing the things they see.
Same my neighbor died from a overdose in his bathroom and I witnessed him getting pulled out in a body bag and they kinda accidentally dropped him a little it was a weird sight that I can never get out of my head.

I am so sorry OP and the other commenters had these experiences. When I worked in mortuary transport the first thing I was told was to always treat the deceased with the respect they deserve. It's disgusting how many people go into the field and treat them like they're trash. I always reported people who were disrespectful to the dead to the coroner. The business of death is huge but also very much like a community so the bad ones are usually fired very quickly and unlikely to get hired for the same line of work in the area.
That's just having zero respect,!

Crime scene cleaners aren’t hired by the city, they’re normally locally/privately owned businesses but if the company these people work for can afford to get therapy for their cleaners they definitely should, I can’t even begin to imagine how injurious this job is to the mental state of these people.
Jobs that no one want like butcher and plumber pay usually well relative to the amount of skill required. I have no doubt this job is no different.
There's a special kind of respect you have towards people in that field of work- knowing they have to see the worst parts of what people can do and darkest parts of life on a frequent basis. There is no sum of money which could have me work in a job like that, it would just be too much for me to take.
I got respect to anyone who does this as a profession and has the stomach to handle everything that comes with it.
I worked for a junk removal company, and I’m so glad that the worst we had to deal with was just the worst of peoples living habits and not human remains. Although the mystery cooler that had been chilling on this guys porch with old meat inside could’ve been anything.

I really feel for this person, this video was honestly heartbreaking. I know someone has to do this work, but it sounds absolutely brutal. I just finished listening to the audiobook by former NYC Medical Examiner Barbara Butcher, "What The Dead Know." Very similar kinds of stories. She is an incredibly strong woman who ended up taking some time in a psychiatric facility after losing her job, not mainly because of the job loss, but because she struggled so much with the impacts of having to turn off her emotions for so many years.
Im stunned just hearing abt this. God bless this individual and the work they do

I did trauma cleaning for a short time and couldn't handle it. Not even so much the nasty stuff but the having to be fully suited and masked up for so long I couldn't do it. Respect to the folks who deal with the stuff that nobody else wants to.

Working in the same field, I always feel bad for wanting jobs because of the context of the job itself. It's a necessary awful job to have, but I can happily say I do love the job. Helping out families and seeing the place after we're done is incredibly rewarding.

I think one of the biggest problems with our society is that individuals are expected to 'specialize' in just one particular thing, and they are essentially forced to overdo it. Many, many jobs cause injuries from repetition (sitting too much, performing a particular hand motion too much, etc.). In this case, 500 years ago basically every person would have to deal with a few traumatic incidents in their lives, but at least the trauma was spread out. The wife would have had to clean up after her husband's suicide, etc. Now we expect one poor soul to deal with this type of thing day in and day out, and we're just not built for it, in the same way we aren't built to be sitting all day long.

I always thought crime scene cleaners were in the same conglomerate as police officers. I was so wrong. As someone who would like to study to become a paramedic or a sex crimes detective videos like this one that don’t sugarcoat depravity are always appreciated.
If you become a paramedic you will also be cleaning stuff like this,as well. I always recommended people to do a normal job. It will give you the worst PTSD. If you go through with it please go to therapy and get on medicine or that job will drive you to suicide.
@@tiaslays255 I appreciate your concern. Thank you. The people in my household and a few clinicians know I‘ve always been a bit off. I don’t feel some emotions and the ones I feel aren’t deep. This lack of emotional experience makes it so that I‘m unaffected by traumatic events I witness. It also means I get easily bored in normal jobs. I need the stimulation of a heroic career to feel something.
My older sister used to have a friend who worked doing crime scene clean up in Las Vegas, he said it was the most depressing thing you could possibly imagine

My best friend who I knew for 20 years had an absence epilepsy episode and fell straight into the train. It took his head off and he's leg. I needed counselling for 3 months after that. That morning I was having breakfast in a cafe with him 2 hours later the unthinkable happened RIP my Buietifull friend Stephen 🌹

Man, this has to be one of the hardest jobs in the world. I really do hope that this person has a strong support system around them. I know that somebody has to do it, but still... Hugs to them.
As a retired Iraq and Afghanistan vet I'd seen some horrible things. My niece is a police woman, the things she has to deal with I'd never manage myself. I'd be sectioned. Police deal with way more horrible situations than every day people. Hat off to anyone that cleans crime scenes for a living

Indeed its very difficult. I'm a security supervisor. I once worked at a high rise in downtown Los Angeles. And I had the misfortune of being the first responder to a suicide. Some poor heartbroken guy leaped to his death. There were brain fragments everywhere, his skull laid on the concrete like a broken ceramic vase, and the smell of a fresh kill still haunts me..... So for this guy to witness death for a living....SALUTE TO HIM FOR REAL.
The ending was really honest. I think that’s a common response that we don’t like to discuss too much x
I never thought about this. It opened my eyes and touched me deeply. What a f%$#ed up job and can you imagine the nightmares these 'cleaners' face. It would literally screw you up. I am so sorry for these workers, so grateful, and honestly they deserve to be heroes. Can you imagine growing up as a kid, you would never think you would end up doing this. They honestly deserve to be rewarded. I too have such admiration and respect. Thank-you for the video and for teaching me.

My friend’s dad was a crime scene cleaner and once she told me about a crime scene he cleaned involving someone being in a hot tub for a month. Apparently to this day, he cannot eat chicken noodle soup..

That’s a frickin hard job, man. I would be traumatized and sobbing on the floor if I tried to do that job. You don’t get to pick what house you end up at. The death scene of a child would be a job that messed me up bad. I feel terrible for first responders who have to find these people, but I never considered the mental impact it must have on the people who have to clean it up. These people provide an invaluable service. Thanks for doing what you do. I couldn’t.

That's crazy.My,cousin had her own Crime Scene business for 3yrs.- 5yrs. My,older brother would help her .But,after a few years she sold her business.Yes,both of them did say it's not for every body..Much Respect.
I hope this person is able to talk to someone or have an animal to speak with. The weight this person bears on a day to day basis is disturbing. I know a man that works for the coroners office and he said he’s almost had 2 mental break downs. This guy is young at only 30 years of age. They don’t get paid nearly enough and they also need way more vacation time then they get.

I worked for crime scene cleanup. Its a rough job. I cleaned up a guy who blew his head off with a shotgun during the summer. The guy had his fan running with the window open, and the splatter hit the fan mostly. Apparently he was HIV positive and the blood splatter and brain chunks were spraying out the window to the lower levels. Pretty brutal.
